Pattaya The Avenue yep, Pattaya is going upmarket

Most times i drive into Pattaya I am normally too pissed to take much notice of what has changed, normally what is noticeable about Pattaya is that it is a grey dirty dump, so it's not really very noticeable, but hell this new Avenue did stand out, this is where the new Villa supermarket is amongst other high end places and also low end crap for the Americans, ie Mc Donalds, hell the Yanks have to eat food aswell, even if it is 5 kilos more than the average person would eat perday.

Anyway this place is like opposite Soi Yamato and Soi Post Office, the Shenanigans pub has moved there, although whether that is a good or bad thing I have no idea, Au Bon Pain is there and I like them, they sell really good sandwiches just thought I should mention that incase anybody wants to bribe me Now if city hall could get the rest of the owners of buildings in Pattaya to give them a quick paint job and make them look nice then Pattaya could actually promote itself as being reasonably nice

    Pattaya constantly reinvents itself.
There are some 'nice' things here now.
Thats good, but I would hate for it to forget it's, erm, Roots.

There are some very nicely designed buildings going up these days.

But the Bluddy Roads are an absolute disgrace in this,a City with loads of money to spend.

Tell me. Is there a word in the Thai lingo for 'LEVEL?'. I don't think there can be 'cos whenever they dig up a spot in the road, they NEVER fill it in level with the existing surface......WHYWHYWHY?

Whilst driving along here, you have to keep one eye on the crazy traffic and one on the road,so that you don't hit a great big jolting pot hole!

    It's a nightmare..........

Just found this topic from 2007, and thought it interesting to show what it was like then and what it's like now. Deserted by day, a typical Thai flea market at night, with many of the original tenants having gone bust or fleeing to Central.

It was never going to make it. From day one it was in the wrong position with too much competition and only a matter of time before it degenerated. The toilets are quite useful though.

    i hate this development.

everywhere in thailand they're going upscale, doubling prices, and offering an even shittier service than before.

the only and real reason farangs came here years ago was the cheap price, no matter if you had to sleep in a bamboo shack with rats and scorpions, it was easy to get visas, cheap to live, still unspoiled by mass tourism, and there was no competition from the surrounding communist countries like laos/cambodia/vietnam/burma.

look at it now ...first of all if i want to go upscale i can pretty much stay in europe
and still get decent cheap deals in low season.... secondly what the fuck they have in mind ? pattaya, phuket, samui, were just shitty fishermen's village with a dozen bars and hookers, no more no less, now they pretend to become like Dubai or Singapore just because they made some bucks ripping off legions of farangs over time.

i'm not surprise by the recent 40-50% drop in tourism, and i can say it was quite noticeable even before the clashes in BKK so lets avoid the government propaganda for once ... thailand is a sinking boat and tourism is going down the drain because they DESERVE it !

go in malaysia, china, bali, philippines ... friendly people, affordable prices, decent service .. a completely different attitude towards tourists and farangs, especially malaysia and SG but hey even in India and Nepal unless you're a moron they treat you very very well and it's cheaper than cambodia.

the "land of smiles" (or scams) is over !

^^Pretty much. Even at places like Samet, they're replacing the bungalows with style-over-substance "resort" multi-storey monstrosities. c/w Extortionate prices and dismal don't-give-a-fuck 'service' staff.
As long as everything looks nice, though...

    Samet used to be great.
One of my favourite places on the planet.
Now it's shit and one of my least favourite.
    Where is this new avenue?
Does it have lots of cum guzzling whores? Cos that's all that matters.
If I want clean beaches and good food I'll go to Mallorca.
