Ok.. heres a little more realistic calculation for what i saw last friday.

    60x800bht = 48k / 14 bars = 3.400 baht + atleast 1 barfee a 300 bht.

What i know the from the bars they pay around 100 baht for each girl working. However its mostly 1-3 and rarely above that who actually works. The rest are just waiting to pickup farangs.

Also.. we are in the lowest of the low season now right? In the middle of a rainperiod so that close to no short term tourist comes here right?

Besides waiting for a better season we have army guys coming up here a couple of times every year wich boost the profit alot.

I still think most of the bars will survive this period in waiting for the better season. But then again.. i've always been an optimist, hehe.

Aye.. im sure if we gonna start Karaoke bars theres gonna be alot of stories about fighting. But theres no karaoke bars in Udon Day and Night. Actually the first time i came to this area (close to Nong bua lampu) i was sitting down at a Karaoke when a man rushed in with a piece of wood, slamming it into someones head. Ran away very fast again.. but hey.. that was the first time i visited a Karaoke and have kept myself to the "farang" bars after that.

Also.. if i compare whats going on down here with what happens in sweden when you go out for a drink. Maaan.. then Udon Thani, Thailand is kindergarden. This is truly a relaxed enviroment to go out and have fun in.

The temp difference is negligible. It's only an hour flight from Udon Thani to Sattahip. While Udon is farther north, Jomtien has ocean (bay) breezes.

Lazy Udon farmers burn their fields at least once a year. It's dirty and hazy for a week or two. Not as much farming in Jomtien, maybe more industry.

I went for a wander around 9pm last night, Past Mr Tongs, previously the busiest bar in Udon, Zero customers inside, two old goats sitting outside have a smoke.

Harley O tools the new biker bar, Zero customers, Man ! That guy must be shitting himself after all the dosh he paid to renovate an old dump and rent of 30 k a month.

Day & night, 50/50 bar about 5 customers and another 5 scattered around the other 13 bars.
Nutty park, Up 2 you bar, 4 customers, another 8 or so scattered around the other bars, and they are building more.

One or two bars up for sale already and I bet most would accept an offer to get out.
Molly Malones is shutting up, the little Irish pugilist has had enough.
Rent review time and they want to double it and asked for 2 years worth to be paid up front, he said FVCK YOU and is departing for OZ.

Nice info.. and i heard its dead with tourism down south compared to previous year as well. People who where going Thailand twice every year looking like they will only show up once this year. Why? To expensive nowdays.. or economy bad back home??? No clue!!!

However i really hope for the Udon Thani bars to have more customers during the high season (closer to christmans).

Whar bars are for sale btw?

I think Udon overdid it with so many new bars.

They're all crap and all look identical. Aside from the Irish Clock, which really isn't a bar as much as a restaurant, they're all mind-numbingly mirror images of each other. Boring beer bars and no dancing girls. Isaan conservatism won't allow it. The beer is cheap at 50-60 a small bottle, but all you're getting for that is generally a no-aircon, buy-me-drink, wobbly vinyl stool and crap music bar that beats your living room as a drinkin' place by the tiniest fraction. There's rarely a group of guys that might provide funny/interesting/base banter as with the old farang alley. I think a lot of the old regulars have pissed off back to their countries.

It's gone downhill from farang alley in my opinion (if that's possible).

Best for what, to pick up a nice Thai boy ?

The old Tongs was jumping till late because he had a nightclub license so could stay open to 3 am. But he pissed the cops off so much, in fact he spent some time in the slammer last year, by abusing his licensing hours they would only give him a ordinary bar license this time around so now he has to close the same time as all the others. So despite having a good selection of nice young boys from his harem, doing the serving duties his new place is a pale shadow of his former location. The free peanuts are all right tho and it would certainly suit TD's gay members (you know who you are) but not for me.

    Nay, nay and thrice nay!

Padded bills, half drunk bottles disappearing before your very eyes, full of shirt lifters, and an owner who hates falangs.

Yup, when I walked past last night Tong was standing inside his empty bar looking out the door and smiling at every Farang walking past.
I thought to myself, yea fvck you, weren't too many smiles for us when your bar was doing well.

Yes the tables and chairs were being moved out of Molly Malones, nice work by the landlord to scare off the tenant, by doubling the rent. I wonder what will happen to the place.

But the landlord probably seemed like a nice guy at the time the lease was signed...

Another example of Thais cooking the goose that lays the golden eggs. Too bad. Fuck 'im hope the building catches fire and burns to the ground as soon as Sam is moved out.

The landlord may have some trouble re letting the place
The new rent will be too high for a Thai business and the centre of gravity for Farang business has moved away from that location and towards the railway station end, so it would be a very dodgy prospect for any sort of Business targeting westerners.

So I have a strong suspicion that it will lie empty for quite some time.

There is a lot of empty premises around in Udon but since the influx of Westerners who have agreed to pay silly prices for rent the Thai landlords have had their expectations raised, and all of them are holding out for the big stupid farang tenant with bulging pockets.
As an instance the average price for a premises in Soi Irish clock was around 8,000 Bt Pcm last year, but the last one was let at 30,000 Bt.
While we point an accusatory finger at greedy landlords, who are the stupid, thick bastards that agreed to pay Pattaya prices for premises?

well said pp,udons never go anywhere near pattaya in terms of business, so yep theyve shot themselves in the foot proper.
maybe its easy for me to say that reading this thread sitting in the uk, with expeirience of running beer bars but its the truth, they are hard little businesses to run unless your very lucky or thai, they can be goldmines fo a while but as soon as your doing well, bang! or sell, simple as that!

Fair enough, PP. But the notion that's there's always gold at the bottom of a farang's wallet, especially in a one-horse town like Udon, is a bit pie-in-the-sky.

I'd bet the rents drop once the bar owners start folding faster than a Chinese laundromat. When they sit vacant for a year or two and start crumbling at the edges, the Thai landlords might, (doubt it really, but ...) realize the error in their ways.

Who knows, I might be wrong and Pattaya will mover North.

Udon will never be like Pattaya, more difficult to get to, the cops who aren't as avaricious as the Pattaya mobsters, and local population won't allow it.
Remember the guy who thought is was good idea to start and promote a swingers resort, outside Udon ? I mean can youi imagine the Pattay pussy hounds coming here and thinking Wolverine was a good night out at a go go.

Wolverine -- possibly the worst go-go I've ever been to.

And I've been to some seriously awful ones.
