I met Tex for a beer a couple of nights ago, the occasion being the opening of anew bar " A beer too far" The owner prviously ran the Aussie bar, although he's a clog hopper (dutchman). Good group of fellows there. The location is at the New Nutty Park complex. About 20 bars there with another 20 to open. Soon there will be a ration of one bar for each resident Farang in Udon.

    my tuppence worth ..
old soi farang had VIBES AND ATMOSPHERE ,,
the new place, night and day , has plenty of empty ness ..
not that the big time property developers in udon
care two bhts ,,, they more concerned with building ,
    more shopping malls ...

Well Dave no surprise there mate as thats what property developers do.
While I can see where you are coming from the old Farang alley was a stinking shithole, but thats just my opinion.
The day and night is a big soulless barn, and as the bar owners find that they don't have enough income to pay the rent many of them will close up, spoon they will will run out of hopeful Harrys keen to make their fortune in Udons bar business and it will even worse than it is now.
For now there are a lot of bars with more girls than customers, so its a good time for the Sunshine club members, enjoy it while you can.

^ I guess if you live in Sakon Nakhon well then Udon would be bloody great ! but could think of better places to live myself, its just that I sort of hampered with kids needs etc.
Why do you think its great ? The longer I stay here the more I think I shall die of boredom before old age.

Hehe.. most farangs i meet here are older, yes. But im only 30 and i got a bunch of buddies coming here around my age, and im sure none of us would prefer pattaya over Udon. Sure.. if every day is supposed to be a wild party.. then further south would be the choice.

But then again there is no problem getting a wild night up here now and then either. And you get two times as much for your money.

50 baht for a LEO is kinda standard price around here!!!

Luckily most of these guys tend to say in and around the city bar area, so I don't have much contact with them.
What it will do tho, is erode the good will of the Thai locals, there is plenty of it for now, but attitudes are being hardened.
Where do you get everything from?

I travel around the bars in udon on daily basis and theres about 2-3 times in 8 months ive heard some shouting. Never seen any fight though. I dunno how people acted before i came here.. but i would certainly say the general attitude of people going to the bars here is great. Ofcourse we dont want that trash up here in Udon, but you dont need to scare away the nice guys as well, hehe. Udon and its many new bars will need some more tourists for sure.

At the moment most of the bars only have customers enough to pay their bills because of the "low season". Most of the bars have alot of girls there every day... but its on fridays and saturdays most of the farangs join up. Yesterday i did a rough count to 60 farangs in there at the same time... could have been more. if you split that with the number of businesses im sure there are farangs enought to make it a good day.

    ^ 60 x 500 Bt each = 30 K bt / 20 bars = 1500 Bt per bar and that's on a GOOD nite.

If you go to the bar areas on a week night, you would get 1/4 of that, but I'm no expert as I would go to the bar areas maybe 4 times a year.

As for fights, must admit only seen one and that was a bar owner who took exception to a customer, the rest is just hearsay.

But they happen, in the village the Local karaoke place had a Fight between two Euro trash, one of whom proceeded to run his pickup over several of the local lads moto cycles.
Sadly there is a number of tossers here, one known as the white Mr T , wears his fortune around his neck, stands proudly outside the shopping centre displaying his chains of gold, reportedly he was rolled by some baits Boy friend, apocryphal story maybe?

    Gross Profit, right !
Rent, Elect and other direct overheads I estimate at about 10,000 month so 329 Bt a day, wages I don't know, maybe another 400 Bt a day based on 4 gals at 3,000 PCM.
On the other hand you may have some income from BF's but its minimal, most codgers here have someone at home.
It looks like a colossal waste of effort to me. The other problem with Udon as against say Pattaya is that there is normally no day time business, its all between 8pm and the codgers bedtime say Midnight.
