    New to Thailand from U.S

    Hi everyone,

I am from Miami, Florida, U.S.A. I've been in Thailand for about six months. I am living in a small farm village outside of Korat. I have a lot to learn. I have been traveling the world for the last few years, fishing in many exotic places. Canada, Siberia, Brazil Amazon Jungle, Venezuela Jungle and more. I came to fish in Thailand and decided to live here. Will be leaving for Africa to fish for the Tiger Fish in a few months. Prior to retireing, I was a graphic artist.

I'm somewhat isolated here in the village. I haven't generated the courage to drive in Korat yet and don't know my way around. Thai driver's performance on the road leaves something to be desired. Driving on the left side of the road is strange to me. I instinctively want to move to the right side. I am living with a girlfiend and have to prevail upon her to do the the driving.

Trying to learn to speak Thai, but making very slow progress. Girlfriend speaks limited English. I get by with the others in the village with a few Thai words and a lot of imaginative pantomine.

I'm glad I found this board. The limited communication I have sometimes drives me carzy. The urge to speak to another human who understands me is overpowering.

Welcome Bill. I too reside in Isaan. You will find many TD members in the region. Takes some time to get used to the laid back lifestyle but it does grow on one.

I fish as well so a trip to the Mekong to try our luck with those giant catfish would be great fun!

Welcome Bill, I am from the PNW, Central Oregon to be exact, love the Trout fishing at home, we have a 7 Rai lake on our place, but the fish are small and eat rice so I don't fish em.

Greetings Bill and welcome to the forum. We are N north east of Korat, or will be in a month or two. I enjoy the bus ride in to the city, as we are car-less at the mo. Thai language can be a bit of an uphill thing but well worth the effort for every word you get right. Once it is in the memory, keep using it and move on to the next.

A trip to a lager village may reveal any number of Thai people with a limited understanding of English. They are all keen to learn more and they love it when you correct them. Teachers, as well, are always willing to stop and talk in their second language. Best of luck, get a map and get out there and share the language that you know.

Good first post, by the way.

Hi Bill - Nice introduction there.

As you can see there are a few of us who live in or around Korat (not me though) and the ones I've met are not too weird.

If you fancy a decent meal, you could do a lot worse than trying Chez Andy which is not too far from the Night Plaza.

Also, you've got to spend at least 5 hours a day on here for 6 months before you lose the 'newbie' tag, so get posting.

Nah, don't listen to the hardasses, it takes all of 30 minutes to settle in the saddle. Some of us get comfy faster than others. Howdy.

Welcome. I to am also from the States (California). But still reside in the USA. However, my wife and I do have land up N.E. of Korat near Dan Khun Thot. I hope you will enjoy living in LOS.

Welcome bill, a few of us like our fishing here.

I recommend you overcome your natural reluctance and get driving though- life can be pretty isolated if you're stuck in one remote place (it ain't as bad as it looks once you're settled behind the wheel), and theres bound to be a few falang scattered around nearby villages. Look for them out the front of village shops getting aled.

Welcome Bill, I live around 130km from Korat, doing fish farming. I'm quite often in Korat, so let me know where you live.
