    Greetings

Greetings fellow earthlings (or wherever you may have oozed from),

I am a newly registered user and I am posting this note to introduce myself and give a little background information. I am a retired expat and I've been living up country for a few years now. You might ask yourself why any sane person would actually do that, well, I left my sanity at the baggage carousel upon arrival so hopefully that should explain it. The truth is my significant other, who is a career professional but not of the sporting type, works in a local office and we're not too far from the parent's farm. Monthly rent is economical since we're getting a good deal on a house that costs no more than a nightly room rate at a moderately priced hotel in Bkk, but not including additional costs for questionable recreational activities.

Although I would like to be able to speak and read Thai, I have not made a lot of progress in accomplishing that. At the rate I am going, I may be able to mutter a few barely intelligible sentences in approximately 150 years. By that time if this place hasn't destroyed itself already, ASEAN will hopefully have kicked in and I won't need to be so concerned about speaking Thai anyway.

To maintain what shreds of sanity I have left, I occupy too much of my time using the computer. As a hobby I collect a lot of feature length films and music, to the extent that I now have about 5 terabytes of data. And yes, I also have a sizeable collection of pron as I am not that far over the hill yet. Since I've got thousands of albums, to make use of those I have a DJ system that can produce some serious sound levels. In a turn of what might be the normal situation in Thailand, I am proud to say the locals actually complain about my noise. I am baffled as to why they complain though, because I make a conscious effort to play tasteful selections from such notable groups as The Stooges and The Butthole Surfers, and favorite albums like "Metal Machine Music" by Lou Reed.

On Teak Door, I have been making use of the Thailand and Asia News forum for some time now, and especially in the past couple of weeks with the political situation heating up. It seems a good place to catch news that otherwise might take a lot of effort to individually search for. I finally decided to give in, for better or for worse, and register as an official user.

So that's it for this brief introduction. I realize since this is the newbie lounge postings are supposed to be polite, but since I have been viewing the forum for some time I realize what kind of exchanges go on. I will look forward to butting heads with fellow butt heads on TD in the future, and who knows, perhaps there may even be the occasional friendly exchange of banter.

Oh, and one last thing, however it may have come about, my profile seems to have lit up with more red lights than a whore house. As in the case of ticking off the neighbors with too much good loud music, I am proud to see that I must have offended some butt heads here already. Yeeee Haaaa, Great Balls of Fire !!!!!

    Now carry on...

Yes, they were masters of the absurd and never fail to get a laugh from me.

I'm sure if the stooges were alive today, they'd do a better job of governing Thailand than the usual cast of characters, no matter which side of the fence they're on. Come to think of it, even as corpses, the stooges would probably do better.

I wanted to take a moment to thank those members that responded to my intro with your comments, greens, etc. I am already having some fun posting and discussing information in the Thailand Zoos and Animals forum.

Elsewhere, I am a bit hesitant to post in some of the other forums such as Thailand and Asia News for a couple of reasons; one being the political sensitivity, and two that some opinions on topics seem to be so polarized as to result in exchanges that are inflammatory, insulting, etc.

Regarding point one, it seems that many posters are not overly concerned about making comments that would likely be held as illegal by the junta. While I am sure there is also a much larger group of those that remain silent on Thai political topics as they don't want to get into trouble, especially if they are currently residing in Thailand. I wonder why some members appear to be so unconcerned about their posts on political issues. I actually went a bit out of bounds already on a thread as my first photo to be added was an unflattering edited photo of a certain new general in charge that was promptly deleted by the mods. I don't intend to venture much farther on the political topic for the time being mainly because I live here. Does anyone have any opinion or advice they'd like to share about the potential dangers of getting caught by the powers for posting comments that might be considered illegal?

On the second point, I know I will either need to learn to roll with the situation and continue posting regardless of flaming attacks, or just avoid posting if I think it might create one of those situations.

On the topic of Thai political comments, I see there's a new thread in the TeakDoor lounge "Junta jailing forum members?" that is answering some of my questions about that concern.
