New to Teak Door but not a Thailand newbie

    Hi.

I've never registered here before although I've lived in Thailand for well over 10 years. I must confess to often looking in at the "other" Thailand forum, but between the over-zealous moderators there and the generally nasty core of old-time members, I've never bothered to sign up. Figured it was time to join a forum, so here I am.

I suppose that WOULD be the sociable thing to do.

I'm from Canada but have lived in the Sattahip area of Chomburi for quite a while. With the beach in backyard, I suppose being a beach bum is now one of my hobbies, but I also play guitar occasionally and dabble in songwriting. (Actually I'm very excited about a song I've just completed that I truly think has wide audience appeal, and I will start to see how I can possibly market it. I don't have a clue of how to go about that, though, so if anybody has actually had some success selling their intellectual creations, I'd appreciate any tips.)

I'm employed full-time here in LOS but won't bother saying more about that here right now. I assume that kind of info will come up as a result of other posts and/or replies.

Thanks for the welcomes, to those of you who have taken to the time to post.

    LOL

No, I won't need help sourcing the basics, but as we know, there are always those elusive little things that are hard to find (like borax - hear it does a real good job of getting rid of those little red ants that like to frequent my condo and leave a good-sized itchy welt if they happen to bite.)

Yes, every day is a school day here in LOS, but I think one of the the best lessons a newbie can quickly learn is to reverse their Western logic 180 degrees if one wants to understand the Thai approach to life.

Welcome. Don't those ant packets from hardware stores work on red ants? Or the little plastic ( roach motel type) boxes from Tesco?

I' haven't had much luck with either the chalk or the white powder -- seems to slow the traffic for a while, but only for a while. Soon they're back in full force again. I haven't tried the "roach motel" type, yet. Do they use the method where the ants take the tasty poison back to the queen who eats it and dies? That's what I understand goes on with borax.

I'll be happy to hear about any solution to rid my condo those little red a**holes. I'm careful not to give them and food sources (as they love sweets and meat) but even then they are attracted to electricity and when desperate enough start checking towels and bed clothing -- looking for some dead skin to eat, I've been told -- seems far-fetched to me but...

    Welcome aboard mate.

We are OK over here mostly, Socal is a bit insane, Butterfly is a poove and DJPat likes bottoms and runs away from restaurants when the bill fronts up but besides that TeakDoor is the ducks nuts.

My good self has the best grammar on the board so if your struggling with the written word I'll gladly help you out.

    Cheers mate.

Thanks for the latest greetings and offers of help.

I recently decided to use the car less and bought a scooter, so I had to go the Transport Office today and get my motorcycle license. To be honest, I've always used my Canada car license in Thailand, and it's been no problem, but that hasn't be case when I get stopped on the scooter -- the BIB won't accept it. What a friggin' ordeal at the Transport Office. I got there at about 8:15 and finished at around 13:30, but I'm driving the bike legally now, so I'm not going to be paying the boys their tea money for that problem anymore -- yipee!

adzt1, I feel your pain. The little SOBs have got me in the private regions, as well. Fortunately, not as bad as they got you. We must find a way to put serious dents in their numbers.

terry57, thanks for the warnings about fellow forum members, but I'll assume you're joking and look forward to some off-the-wall posts from those mentioned. As for your kind offer of help with the written word, I feel pretty confident of my command of the English language and my ability to express myself accurately. However, you may find that on some of the bad hangover days, I can be a little incoherent.

Mr Earl, I don't know where you come from in Canuckistan, but like me, you're probably happy to be away from the freakin' freezin' cold weather. I put in 21 years in Calgary, and every winter the Arctic front would descend on us, dropping the temps to around -40 for a few weeks. I joke with friends here, saying that after more than 10 years in Thailand, I'm still thawing out from my time in Western Canada.

Anyway, seems like a friendly bunch here, so I'm looking forward to navigating through the different sections and learning more about the forum and its members.
