Smile New member here, advice wanted.

Well, here goes. My biggest concern is my age: at 71, am I employable in Thailand? I retired from a California high school 2 years ago after 21 years of teaching Spanish. I earned a BA in English Linguistics/ESL with a minor in Spanish from Fresno State University in California. Prior to that I taught ESL to Mexican, Lao, Hmong and Indian immigrants for 10 years. I lived in Madrid, Spain for 4 years in the late 70's, where I taught English in a number of private academies and where I had the opportunity to perfect my Spanish. I am a divorced man, in good health and foresee myself working until at least the age of 75.

I would think with those creds it would be easy to find work teaching here if thats what you want to do. Welcome aboard! I have heard that the Thai's like the American accent as well, as it sounds clearer to them so that could be a plus for you. Good luck. You only live once right?

    No you're fine.
Age, as you may well be aware, is seen as wisdom and knowledge in Thailand.

Of course there will be. American English is always spelled wrong. Or should that be 'spelt'?

Sorry to say but I smell a TROLL. Why would you need or even want to teach ANY language at your age? Most teachers here RETIRE at the age of 60, Thai and farang.

A job could be found but I think it would be harder for you to find. You do have the experience but how far can you use that to secure a job at your age. I would think ANY school would require you to supply your own insurance and would be worried if you could handle the work load.

Unless you're teaching at higher levels (university), then I think it would be hard to secure a position in a high school or even harder at a lower level.

There are teachers here that are close to your age (I have met) that teach here but they have been for some 20 years.

Best of luck to you and just send out your resumes. Ajarn.com is a place to start.

At my local uni in the boondocks all staff must retire at age 60. Special dispensation is required to continue. I think that this might well be true for all government institutions.

I can not see them hiring a 71 year old.

Having the right connections would help

This happened to a math teacher friend of mine!
