5 Yr Driving License. Very quick + Easy. Robbery inc.

Finally decided to get a 5 yr license as my first 1 yr was expired.

Was up early so went up there for 8:30... Passport, Non-Imm visa, Cert. of Residence as I don't work here, and health cert from clinic.

They always want to keep the original Cert. of Residence which is a balls as they can cost up to 2000thb depending on your embassy or immigration office. Colour photocopy it instead and give them that.

Into booth 18. Very nice pleasant woman, all smiles and niceties. Arrived at 8:30 and had my 5 year license (actually 5 years and a few months as they put the expiry date as my birthday in 2017, instead of Nov 2016).

    405b.

Great stuff. Go out and give the missus a call to tell her I'll drive her to work. Look at the official receipt. 305b.

Yup, the two official receipts, one with everything itemized add up to only 305b, not 405b.

    A nice little scam.

    But done so nicely.

They really do do everything with a smile.

^I would pay 100 Baht any day to avoid the hassle. I'm sure you did so with a smile. Renewing a driver's license here in the Philippines is an all day affair. Not screwing with you, just way too many people. I would pay a lot more than 100 baht to avoid that.

Getting the original one can be a balls. A few hours of videos and retarded multiple choice questions that either have no correct answer or four of them.

Watching the Thai attempt to round a few cones though is entertaining.

Just had my car and bike licences renewed for another 5 years. I paid 960 baht and have receipts for -

505 baht car + 100 baht for the card
255 baht bike + 100 baht for the card

No scam at NK going by the receipts. Only difference from 5 years ago was the additional 200 for the cards and additional 150 baht for the bike.

How do I get a certificate of residence? I have a non O visa. Is it a case of taking a letter from landlord to state terms of my tenancy plus passport to local immigration office??

^^^Like most things here, the facilities are in a shambles, long lines to get a number, then walking quite a distance to an alley up the road for an eye exam, then walking back twice the distance in the other direction to do a piss test for drugs, then back to the starting point to see if your number has been called. If so, then get another number to get in line to get your picture taken, and on and on and on. Everyone pleasant (amazingly so given the hordes they deal with all day every day); actually fairly efficient given the numbers of people involved. No pushing or shoving; few fixers. As this is where you get a real Filipino license, unlike the temporaries which are given to foreigners and visitors, I usually attract some attention as the only foreigner in the mob - have actually had people offer me food and a cut in line - as if they are embarrassed by the chaos. The first time I did it it was a bit daunting and took almost the entire day. Now it's old hat and I got through the last time (three-year license) in about four hours. I wish they had five year ones here.

Can get them at immigration, but that would mean dealing with the Thai, so I get mine through my embassy.

Providing you are doing your 90day reporting you can just ask immigration for one.
It should be free but of course some officers will ask for money

I have had my 5-year car and M/C licenses renewed for another 5 year period.
When I renewed two years ago in CMai I had to do the reaction and side perception tests, plus a couple of others:
is that a requirement for renewal elsewhere? Cheers

^When I updated mine from 1 year to 5 years I didn't have to take/do any tests, here in Khon Kaen.

Yes they should be free from the Immagration but at Korat they charge 500 baht, they were free when the immagration Office was at Kap Choeng!!
I now get mine from the local Tambon Office for free and they are accepted when I renew my Driving licences at my local office in RattanaBuri.

Colour blind test only at NK. In and out in 20 minutes. Only requirements were copies of work permit, passport, missus' ID card and tabian bahn.

Can be done as well here [operators licences] in Tasawang, A.

I believe it was just a few that recall the short-lived office in Kap Choeng...
    Efficient and low-charges.
Closed outta the blue. Something is amiss.

The extra 100baht was for the photograph license. Last time in CM two receipts one for 305 baht for the application and the second for 100baht for the photo license.

Do they let you keep the 1 year?

Reason I ask is that car hire company's in the U.K insist that your license be more than 12 months old. I tried to lie and say that in Thailand only a 1 year licence is given so they said "Show us last years license then."

I tried to lie again and say that they won't let you keep it but they wouldn't buy it.

Yes (in Khon Kaen), but renew to your 5 year before your 1 year expires

Cheers. Mine expires on New Years Eve (English). The motorcycle taxi driver who took my medical exam for me was wasted when he went to the doctors last year.
