Old info, but this should explain your problem...

I’ve commented on my misadventures with GPS in several posts, which you might find by doing a search on Garmin or GPS.

I have a two-year-old Garmin nüvi 265W that I purchased in the States and a discontinued Garmin SD card for SE Asia that I found on E-bay. I also have an iPhone with GPS capabilities, but have never used it because True Move only gives me 1GB/month of data since it’s a Chinese model (not to be confused with a Chinese clone). Also, True Move doesn’t have very good coverage.

    Among the problems I’ve encountered:
    1. The Garmin nüvi does not handle Thai. It has thirty-two languages, but Thai is not one of them.
    2. There are at least half a dozen transliteration systems. ถนน (road) can be transliterated as tanon, thanon, tha nohn, tà-nŏn, etc., and it’s a simple word, two syllables, three letters. Unless the address is spelled and spaced exactly as it is in on the SD card, it won’t match.
    3. Thai addresses are confusing. There may be a main street, an alleyway off the main street, a lot number and a unit number. A typical address might look like 83/27 Sukhumvit Soi 92. For good measure, they may throw in the name of a district and/or a ward. The nüvi doesn’t recognize sois or subdivisions.
    4. I don’t understand Thai abbreviations. Thai is not noted for its brevity. The formal name of Bangkok (กรุงเทพมหานครอมรรัตนโกสินทร์มหินทรายุธยามหาดิ ลกภพ นพรัตน์ราชธานีบุรีรมย์อุดมราชนิเวศมหาสถานอมรพ ิมานอ วตารสถิตสักกะทัตติยวิษณุกรรมประสิทธิ์) is the longest geographic name in the world. But it’s usually shortened to กรุงเทพฯ or กรุงเทพ. If I see a couple of characters followed by a period, I’m at a loss.
    5. The addresses on Google maps do not match Garmin addresses or addresses found elsewhere on the Internet, such as the organization’s web site.
    6. The shortest distance by car is not necessarily a logical path. Bangkok is not big on intersections and has a lot of boulevards where traffic lanes are separated by various barriers. Going across the street may entail driving several kilometers to make a U-turn.
    7. If you ask three different Thais for directions, you are likely to get four different answers, all of which are wrong.

There are other SD cards that fit the Garmin and undoubtedly other units.

I would look for a Thai GPS navigator with Thai and English capabilities. If nothing else, you might have occasion where a Thai could enter an address for you and facilitate your journey.

Use the Where Am I? feature to find the coordinates of locations you frequent and record them to your favorites.

Could be a simple transliteration problem.

Google maps and Bing maps sometimes have different names for the Sois in Bangkok.

Have you tried looking up an address on google maps to get the correct soi?

For instance Google maps does not recognize Soi Thung Setthi but it does recognize Soi Thung Setthi Yaek 26

    Bing is the same.

Both will recognize Soi Thung Setthi Bangkok

Give us an example of what it does not recognize?

I apologize if any offence was caused. unless it was intended.

Basically, I'm assuming you have Thai Garmin (or insert company here...) maps installed, due to the fact that you purchased the car in Thailand for the Thai market. The English voice navigation is pre-programmed, so it wil give you the left, right, straight on bollocks no problem, but not able to identify the Thai script.

I'm no expert BTW. Hope others jump in and share their knowledge and you post back with the outcome.

    Good luck.

I don't think that the case. It boils down to the sd card settings. I bought my GPS from the internet. They ask what map area I wanted and it came preloaded on an SD card. I then set the language to English.

English is over-rated - don't worry about it.

The inbuilt satnavs made for the manufacturers do not have the sd card. They are a solid unit and require a customer to drive in every so often to update their maps (for a price after some amount of time).

Figure out what device it is and Google settings for that device.
Likely it is Garmin GPS device with ESRI thai navigator software.

For anyone to help you need to provide type of device and what software it is using.

I have a new Honda Civic navi and while it does work, when I search for points of interest, most times the results are 100's of km away. I know there are many hotels etc closer. I read the EN nav manual but it's no help with that problem. Either 1000's of poi's are missing from the db, 0r maybe it only works properly when in Thai.

10k km checkup is soon, I will ask then but have others noticed this?

thanks for all the advice --will now have to see what incomprehensible solution the dealer comes up with
If this is progress over a road atlas I am not so sure --at least in Thailand !
Will report progress in due course

Can't help to solve your English issue but will say our Honda nav does English fine.

On a different note, however, it won't program a specific destination past a hundred + kilometers or so.

The only advice the dealer offered was to program it for a city then focus on destination once we arrive in said city.

Is that how GPS's generally work?

Mine accepts English input fine, it just doesn't see to have many POI's in the database, or at least it doesn't for Ubon. I suspect they might have used TomTom's map as I tried my TomTom Go940 with recent Thai map updates and it couldn't fine the McDonalds I was parked next to either.

There are two places to select Language, Display language in General settings and the one for the voice in the Navi settings. Maybe if one of those is set to Thai it won't work properly with English input. This is for a 2014 Civic Navi 2.0

I don't have an EN manual and can't figure out the Thai good enough but I was surprised how many options are not available unless you're in park and have the hand brake on. Some settings might be wrong in one of those. You can switch through the screens while in Park and pull up on your hand brake and a new option will pop up on some of the screens .

I'm underwhelmed with their nav system, or at least the content of the database.
