You might like to consider going to the perps with your Thai friend and explaining that you have no wish to capitalise on their predicament, however because of their lack of honesty at the police station they must pay. You expect to hear from their local temple that a donation of 3000bht has been paid by them within 6 months.

I have done this in Ghana and works very well. It also makes you rather popular with the monks/vicars etc

Nice job DSD. Never hurts to call their bluff if you know its bullshit. Always pays to keep your cool, be calm, be polite, be firm, never admit liability if you've done nothing wrong, resist pressure to do otherwise, never lie and convince them you've been here a long time and will pursue the matter through the legal system after consultation with your lawyer as you have plenty of time and money to do so. Also helps to take notes, photographs of all parties , their names and addresses and where they can be contacted.

I've tried this approach a few times and the other parties have always backed down. On one occasion , a member of the BIB got a bit nasty when he saw me taking down his badge number and name and asked me what the hell I was doing. I politely and deferentially as possible pointed out that my lawyer had requested me to get this information so that he would know who to talk to and what station to address correspondance.

In essence....lay it on thick and beat them at their own game.

Of course, as Merlinth has pointed out, if its an accident between cars its better to let the insurance companies sort it out but I have heard of cases where that can backfire. A friends insurance agent advised him to admit liability ( even though he had done nothing wrong ) and that as a result of doing so, he was subsequently stitched up.

Tourist on a 2 week holiday with wife & two kids. He hires a car for a few days and is parked legally at Jomtien beach. A drunk young Thai guy on an unregistered motorbike plows into the back of his parked car causing considerable damage to the bike and the Thai guy. Hospital for a week or so.
About 20,000 baht was demanded for reparation. The farang, rightly, refused to pay and it went to court. The judge found for the Thai guy. His reason: "If the Farang had not been here the accident wouldn't have happened" Fuck Them !!!

    You are smart.

Sorry to say so but people riding bikes in Bkk will understand that they were wrong when sat on a wheelchair.

I am a 20 years big bike driver from Europe.

It's not that bad. Bus, skytrain, MRT, taxi....and a little patience is all you need.
If your close to BTS line sure, but sometimes I'm a 40 baht mototaxi ride from a BTS and a 40 baht skytrain ride and it takes over an hour. I can go to the same place on the bike in 20 minutes.
For 100 baht I can top off a scooter and ride all week. My big moto I can put 500 baht of fuel and it will last 2 weeks.
Riding a bike isn't that bad if you're plenty careful.
That does not mean you have to use a motorcycle, just that you choose too.

You have arrived at stage 4 of Maepenrai

Off I set this morning, minding my own business, riding along on the Yamaha Nouvo. Inside lane doing 50. The bike to my right has 2 passengers and the driver. They decide they want my lane and without a look in the mirror or even a glance over their shoulder, they move lanes.

    Instant collision!

I'm on the floor and the bike's on top of me. My arm's hurting and my shirt is torn.

The police come and straight away, the lies start. They have no license, no insurance or registration and have too many passengers. I'm fully road legal. I'm lucky enough to have enough intelligence and call a good Thai friend of mine who speaks fantastic English. She lives very close and arrives within ten minutes and talks to the police.

Off to the station. More lies.

My friend points-out at least 4 contradictions to their story. The station sergeant at first blames me and comes up with lots of wild scenarios, then says 50-50. I still refuse to play ball and I say I want to take it further.

So he says, OK . You can go to court but we take your bike.

OK says I. I can buy a new one in the morning...The Thais get scared when they know I want to go to court and the story changes, again.

Now a full admission and a promise to pay....I have got a quote this afternoon for 3000b for fairing, lights etc...

It just goes to show. Always a farang's fault!. Without my friend who is a respected business owner in the area, I would have been fucked.

    Land of smiles....
    So you have done the right thing after (probably) not taking sufficient care in traffic, (what no body language? I doubt it) but lets leave that as even;

firstly create a good impression on a Thai of influence so that they will go to bat for you = 1 point.
Stick to your story = 1 point.
Insist on compensation = 1 point
Take your friend and the copper out for a meal and drink (spend some of the 3,000) = 2 points.
Get the coppers mobile number and don't give him yours - 1 point

    How did you score?

    If 4 or more you win the game of Maepenrai - If 6, you are; jai yen yen;
    enjoy .

Really I can't see the big deal about standing up for your rights and demanding justice.

Problem is here that people turn over when it gets a bit tough and are too easy to accept being told to walk away and accept things as they are.

I for one will never allow these thieves to fuck up and then want to blame someone else.

A very shallow world you live in my friend...I must be lying, because?

I'm not friends with coppers and my friend who helped me at the police station did so because they were wrong and I was right.

They changed the events of what happened more than four times. They stated there was only one passenger and one driver, when there were three in total. They also tried to swap the passenger for the driver....But it's me who's lying? Probably not watching the road, was I?

All Thais don't lie and there are no no prostitutes, either!

    Toddle off back to TV...

I don't think Timpatco was calling you a liar. I believe he was questioning your driving ability.

In particular the inability to spot the ever present, subtle body language that is always present just before some [at][at][at][at] decides to change lanes for no apparent reason.

Thing is, indicators are there so people don't have to master the art of reading body language. They are particularly useful when confronted with four or five bodies to read.

    Give 'em hell DSD.
