    Any Samlor Drivers Out There

Probably a question best directed to folks in the boondocks, but any of you good folk ever drove/owned a samlor? I've seen them on sale from new for around 80-100k and they seem perfect for that short trip to the ampur or a sun/rain free 'motorcycyle' trip out through the countryside.

Does anyone know if they are classified as a car or a bike?
Back off Margaret, you're on a sugar rush!

well they've gone up in price then because when I looked at getting one for the missus they were 40 - 50k

there was that crazy European who drove his back to Europe from LoS - although TAT did sponsor him I suppose

Hope you're right W. I saw them in a 'showroom' close to ChiangMai train station a while back. They seem ideal for me. I'm not a confident bike rider yet like the freedom - A 'trike' would probably also work, but I quite like the utilitarian nature of samlors....returning home loaded up with bags of produce from the market.

I am not sure what you are talking about when you say Samlor.

Do you mean those things with two wheels up front, usually red, and a 100cc engine. The front is big loading area and in Sukothai they use tham as taxi's ?

Well, I was thinking of the samlor in picture 1, but after looking at the others I'm all of a dizz.

I did it once, but I wasn't very good; I fell over after the trifle throwing stage - I hope that answers your question Odd Codder...."....Watch out for what roundabout?"

This is what we call sam lors in Phuket:

As you can see, some of these sturdy vehicles are fitted with the very latest in safety equipment - a wooden floor, a metal door at the back - and even have crash helmets, although apparently only supplied for the driver.

Such death traps, sorry, "people carriers", are driven with a kind of "I dare you to crash into me - can't you see how many people you would kill?" type of attitude by the proudly poor owner, such as in the last picture whose number plate, intentional or not, sums him up nicely - SOB.

my favorite is this one (well If I had one I'd have the optional beach umbrella mounted to keep my fair skin and the brown skin of my loved one, well yes, fair/brown!)

    the mighty motorized sa-leng(sp?)

the best of the best modes of transport in the LoS.
    why?
It rewquires no paperwork, no license plates (an old cd will do as a reflector), no insurance, nothing for the pigs to feast on, the cops wont give you more than a disgusted look. Everybody gives way. Great load capacity: 3 in the 'cockpit' seat plus half a dozzen in the 'fusalage' - holds up to any megabuck SUV

If a sa-leng should hit you, you wind up paying them, even if you are right! (its just the social order of things in TH, one of those thai pc things, having a sa-leng equals absolute abject poverty!). I never understood why it hasn't become the standard transportation for teflers: like the pope has a popemobile this could be defined as the ultimate ajarnmobile
