Excellent thread with lots of useful information...I've only understood about 5 percent of it, but every little helps.

Could I just sidetrack a liitle and ask about insurance. Any of you good folk have recommendations on good insurance companies/policies. I'm looking for full cover on a saloon car.

I have been with AIA for many years and have nothing but praise for them

Always take good care after an accident, always make sure the third party get the blame and never a problem paying up.

Also I keep my NCB after a whack if it's not my fault.

Just thought of another good reason to use AIA

AIA pay the for the labour but always supply the parts themselves.
This means that you always get genuine parts and it also means that they can get a good discount from the manufacturer.
From Toyota they can get 17 percent off.

When my BiL needed a new cylinder head for his Toyota I got my insurance agent to order it for me and saved 17 percent.
And before you ask, no they can't order a new car

    Thetyim,

I had a look at ther website, but only found some flash presentations with no text, so I cannot confirm their claims. However, it is worth keeping in mind that the aerodynamic force would have to be significantly larger (twice?) than the graviational force acting on the car for it to be able to drive upside-down. The key question would be "at what velocity would this occur?" Afterall, if I put a spoiler at my old Toyota and drove it at Mach 5, it would probably stick to the roof of a tunnel, if I could find one long enough.

    Still sceptical......
Any error in tact, fact or spelling is purely due to transmissional errors...

Actually at speeds above 160km/hr 50% or more of the total force pressing downward on an F1 car is actually from aerodynamic force. So, it's possible that an F1 car would in fact hug the top of a tunnel at speeds which are greater than the force of gravity on the car (about 160km/hr or faster).

Remember, these are cars which are basically airplanes with 4 wheels. Lightweight, very aerodynamic, and powerful engines. Were it not for the downforce they could not corner at 200km/hr or faster. It would be impossible. This is the reason why engineers must weld manholes down on the streets before an F1 race.

Ok went back and test drove the civic yesterday and we a buying one...no suprise really
The civic, has an excelent ride, with a fair ammount of oomph (nothing spectacular though) I test drove the 1.8 auto, I though the auto box was very poor in comparison to the compitition, a standerd 3 speed, although you get paddle shift on higher spec versions I think its still the same box. In fact I'd go as far to say if I was looking to buy an auto, I might still be looking although the civic has supirior ride, equipment, space and power over its rivals, I just found the box annoying changing gear all the time with no easy manual overide.

We took the MiL with us as well and I drove the Jazz again, still really liked the Jazz, form a pure driving point of view it's the best I've tested, the cvt auto box is smoth in auto mode and easy to use in the 7speed manual mode, just feels really crisp, gutsy and secure on bends. It loses to the civic on ride, comfert and interior spece (but not but much). The civic is going to cost about 3000 a month more than the jazz and an extra 25,000 down cheaper would of been nice but both are within my budget.

Not suprisingly they would'nt budge on the price, but we got a list of freebies as long as your arm and they knocked a fair bit off some extras we wanted, leather seats and my missed wanted the skirt and spoiler pack (quite small and tastful), free window film, reversing sensor, remote key, those little things that go around the windows and loads of little things down to a big golfing umbrella.

I'm with thetyim on the upside down thing as well, not sure why WS recons it would nees twice the force ?

Yea something like a 4wd Subaru would be great, probably out of my price range and no dealers around here, The new Camary looks really nice, If I was going for a bigger salon though it would be the 3L vtec Accord
I have more than the average number of arm and legs

I saw that in Monaco and always wondered why. Now I know! I thought it might have been some security measure (bombs inside)

The civic has lots of extras you can get stuck on it, ie most importantly a turbo now that should sort out any sluggishness problems

Thanks, they don't look too shoddy for the money, which is worrying! they are cheaper than I expected though, I reckon could pay around a mill for a newer, decent one.
    Cheers

GoW has got the Honda City (basically the same as the Jazz) and it is a surprisingly good car. It has enough go to overtake safely and it corners really well. I use the transmission in standard mode most of the time. If you want to rag it a bit, the sport mode is noticibly quicker. It takes a while to get used to the engine running at the optimim speed with the car catching up, rather than the revs rising like they do on a standard car.

The Civic is a cracking car though (I'd still have the Ford Focus if it was me).

MtD whats she got the Vtec or standerd, yea the city is the salon Jazz, I only drove the Jazz twice but recon when you get used to the g-box it would be great, I would still of had the manual though. Whats the hard on you have for fords? Their allright, the cars are a bit overpriced here IMO and there's a distinct lack of dealers around here. The one they Have in Nakhon does'nt even sell the cars though can order one through them. I suppose I'm a bit put off by them as the last time I test drove their pick-up (not the latest model) it broke down

The new Ford pickup is the best in it's class, IMO. Yes, it does look boring, but I'm not 18 anymore so I don't care. It uses better materials than all the others and the 2.5 L engine is a cracker.

The Ford Focus is the best car in its class, according to most car mags. I've always driven Fords, so they feel familiar to me.

One problem with the Hondas, is that they sell the US spec rather than the Euro spec versions here, which means sloppy suspension. I prefer a tighter ride. That being said, Honda in general make the best cars - you will never go wrong if you buy one.

    Re. Honda Jazz.

Any of you good people have a view whether the 'V' version is worth the extra money over the 'S' version?....Here's a link with the specs:

Honda Jazz : Jazz up your life

Please remember that you are replying to a person who once emptied their car of automatic gear-box oil in the belief that they were making space in the radiator for anti-freeze.

You will find the i-DSI engine coupled with the CVT transmission to be perfectly adequate.

So the 'S' version is fine in other words.

Thanks Marmers .....Now, the S model comes in three flavours, vanilla, strawber......sorry, MT AT AT(AS).

I can't see much difference between the MT and AT, but the AT(AS) has DUAL SRS, ABS, EBD, and BA....That's got to be worth the extra 70K, right?
