6 years biking expertise in central Bkk here.
The only time it got a bit 'hairy' was when I stayed sober for a week.

Mr Earl, you will find that a lot of the riders came from Penang, I met a few of them a couple of weeks ago, they were hoping to have 200 bikes go to Phuket.

A small, nippy, banged up Suzuki. I don't need to show off any missing attributes with a big polished bike.

It's what you do with it that counts, as they say..

That's a good guess, it averages out to something like this.

Ok, I'll butt out and leave the real bikers to continue this fascinating topic.

Nothing wrong with trailering a bike when it makes sense to do so. I had 4 days to go 6,000 km and there was no way I was gonna do that on my CBR. Plus I had too much crap I wanted to take so I loaded up the truck put the bike on the trailer and I started rolling.

I have done long trips on sport bikes but you really can't do successive 20 hr legs of riding on them without extreme misery.

I would have to say the same as Rigger, it makes you a crazy fucker. That's one ride I wouldn't do on a bet. Doing a one time bike ride of any distance doesn't make someone a biker. I don't think riding to work or school 30 minutes at a time on a moped or 125cc (glorified moped) qualifies.

To me, being a biker means that you have the love of riding in you, something that will always be a part of you. It's either the thrill or just plain enjoyment from the escape that it gives you (or at least me). It's not about fighting traffic on a daily commute, it's so much MORE.

I could get a brand new Harley (Fatboy) for under $20,000 brand new, and I would, except for the ridiculous important tax I'd have to pay to bring it to Thailand. If anybody knows a reasonable way around the import tax ... let me know. By the way ... I really don't know much about bikes but I've wanted a "Fatboy" for about 10 years now.

No way around it that I know of
If you could sneak it across a boarder or sneak it past customs in a create full of other stuff. Once you got it in you would be right but if you got caught it would probably cost you aleast another 20,000

    Break it into parts

    Engine chassis frame

Pay the import duty on the engine and frame separately (spare parts)

Then put it back together and ride it.

Go to police station with said invoice for separate parts and pay the 200B for a red police plate.

The last time I imported any bike parts the barsteds in customs fucked me over big time let alone trying to import a hole bike in parts you may just end up with a great big customs tax bill but hey if money is no problem go for it $2700 dollars worth of parts cost over $1000 to get out of customs.
I did have the parts coming in with a thai import company but the fuck wits I brought the parts for sent the stuff UPS. Never again hand carry parts in is the way to go

Custom boys here make the value of the parts and then you have to pay whatever percentage THEY want. I get all my stuff by hand carry. Most corrupt section of Thailand is these boys and even with multinational companies they can't ever give the same price twice in a row. It hurts Thailand on both import and export.

Ship it in Parts, a use an experienced freight forwarder. Use company (bike shop?) as the addressee.
Just like the US, when bringing in stuff "personally" you can get hit for arbitrary amounts. Know quite a few folks that brought in bikes that way. If you're gonna get a work permit or someother form of semi-permanent residence you can bring in personal items wthin six months I kow this to be true for a WP think thee are other visa types that allow you to do so, not sure which, might have to research that one. might be a way to get over. One dude brought in a "low Rider" was selling it for 550k. No Book.
Book for a hog can be had for about 80k (Baht), maybe less if you got connections. You'll need invoices for all the main parts; the more paper you've got, the better.
Know of a few folks that bring bikes in and get 'em registered on a semi-regular basis. You could ship it to them. (where's that evil smiley?) Best to get it all packaged up and have a close friend to hold for shipment until you're settled. Come over and meet the folks and then have it shipped. Plenty of Fat Boys here for 8k - 1.2 mil. you could always cme over check ot what's available, maybe build (have it built?) your own. Fat boy clone wth a 100 cu in S&S motor, five speed tranny... Doable for around 1 - 1.2 mil. Brand new scoot; hell, prettied up a tad and a one year warranty even!

I agree with you on this.

And how the hell would either one of you know that any woman sitting on the back of a bike is a whore?

I'm surprised at you GoW, patricia is just an idiot so totally expect these comments from him but not from you.

Actually I agree with him that "The farang "bikers" in Pattaya think they are soo cool".

They act like they are the coolest in this world, ride so fast and make it loud. I hate it. I don't mind if they ride outside the town.

For the girl who is on their back. I could tell if she's a whore or not but I will get pass this comment.

Also it's like those big German guys in Pattaya. They also make noise in any restaurants / pubs / bars they go. It's like "Pattaya is mine". You are a sad cnut! Grrrrr...

I know I can't do nothing to get rid of them. Gimme some space to take it out of my mind, please.

Thanks for the advice. It just sounds like so much of a hassle and gamble though. What is the availability and cost of a 2-3 year old Fatboy in Thailand ? I'm guessing over a million baht ?
