Thread: Taking rental car into Laos/Kampuchea?

Is it possible/advisable to hire a van+driver in Thailand, and drive into Laos and/or Cambodia, then return?

Will car hire firms allow this? Does the car need any special papers (like a carnet)?

Have hired van+driver (friend of relative of friend...quite hopeless!) in the past to shlepp family+visitors within Thailand; would prefer to use a professional outfit in future.

Sounds like best bet is to contact some firms and see what they say.

If you are crossing over at Nong Khai then let me know and I can give you a phone number for someone there who might be able to fix you up with a car permit. I have not used this number myself so you can be the first to try it on condition that you post the results back here.
