Has anyone any fuel mileage figures for pre and post free wheeling hubs being fitted on the same pickup? That to me is the only thing worth worrying about.Originally Posted by mykthemin

^Yeah mate, maybe slightly more - due to the extra weight of the 4 wheel drive system.
But oh so useful when you want to access the water sodden farm, 2 wheel drive not a hope, if you do not go off road 4 wheel drive is a total waste of money, many just have for poser value, so sad?
you cannot be serious, just drop a gear and fly past certainly do not need 4 wheel drive or the low box for that 5555555!!!
Have you been to Ko Chang & what gear is below 1st.
The first thing would be the 1000kgs on the back of the pickup.
The second thing the mountain road is very steep.
The third thing the back wheels spinning so to drop a gear you have to go into low range 4 wheel drive.
Look like you don't need a 4x4 as you can do any thing in 2 wheel drive
1st gear
1000kg load
steep hill
rear wheels spinning

Your pickup either has an amazing amount of power or the truth of the story is being stretched a bit.
Fondles there are some very steep sections of road on Ko Chang 45 Degree angle.
It is hard enough driving a pickup up the mountain road with out a load.
Also I was behind a slow moving truck to slow for first gear, so I had to ride the clutch that meant keeping the RPM up having problem with traction.
So change in to low range 4x4.
The Ko Chang mountain roads are not easy to pass slow moving over size trucks, who takes up both sides of the road.

A word of warning, the roads on Koh Chang are treacherous. The steep gradient of the hills can be very dangerous, particularly during the rain, and every year there are fatal accidents; during our research through mid 2008, three people died in road accidents in one week -- serious statistics. If you're not an accomplished and experienced driver then this is not the island to start to learn. Cars and minibuses travel at breakneck speeds around the island and coupled with the hundreds of motorbikes whizzing about it becomes quite hazardous. Particularly bad stretches of road lead from the ferries to White Sand Beach, between Kai Bae and Lonely Beach, and the stretch from Bailan Bay to Bang Bao. With numerous hairpin turns up high on the cliff there is no room for mistakes. Taxis are a far better and safer option for getting about for the inexperienced.
When ten wheel trucks run up the mountain roads they use diff lock.
So to use your pickup in 4 wheel dive is a good idea.
This is the way Thai load there Wagons
I don't drive like this one
