If I compare it to the night rod I'd say the V-MAX is a lot more top heavy and I'd take the Harley every time.

I had a look into Red Baron. They don't get much good press around the web, I'm gonna avoid them for these reasons. It would appear they are now established to the point that they make so much money they just don't give a fuck any more. Just an observation, I'm sure they're great with their regular, first name term customers.

The VMax would chew the HD up and spit it out in very performance category, but I understand that's not your main concern- I tend to put too much emphasis on performance, even at the expense of comfort.

As far as Red Baron goes, I don't have an opinion on them other than they've been in the bike importation game for a while and have a good handle on it- their customer service probably sucks, but that's not unusual in LOS- if you want a bike that forces you to go the gray-market route, you want to make sure the green book won't be a problem. They weren't terribly interested in dealing with me when I called them, but I could tell they didn't think I was serious about the bike (though I made a deposit at Kawi a couple hours later).

Shops that deal with bikes here are used to tire-kickers- show them the money and they perk right up, though.
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

Down in Songkhla, they generally perk up the second a farang walks in the door!

What documentation do I need to put a bike into my name? and separate question, to get finance?

I have a non-O visa. I tried explaining to my landlady that I wanted my name on the house book but she either didn't understand or didn't want to help.

My Dad will move to a new house soon so will get my name onto his house book.

My work wont issue me a work permit as I rotate to Korea and it looks like we have ongoing work here FOREVER. Although I'm processed by our Thai base, working for our Korea base, paid by our Dubai base that is registered in Bermuda and I report to our Singapore base.

For mine I submitted my passport and work permit copies- I'm sure there are other ways if you don't have a WP, but I don't know them (though no doubt someone here does).

My guess for financing would be that you'll need a Thai guarantor- I didn't finance my bike, but that's what I had to do when I financed a car in LOS (though that was over 10 years ago).

When I first came to Thailand I financed a Mits Triton on a Non O using my GF at the time. It was a small local Mits dealer though.

So it was actually her loan?

My gf works for an oil company and earns around 15-20k per month, but she's through an agency on a day rate so may not qualify. I have just went from day rating to staff so will be 3 months before I can show pay slips. I have a Thai friend that can help me out so that might be the only way to go about it.

Personally I've never financed anything in my life and I'd prefer not to but if needs must.

If you have a Thai friend that qualifies and is willing to guarantee your financing, it shouldn't be a problem getting it approved as he's on the line for the payments if you reneg on them.

Deposit down, picking her up on my return from Korea next month.

I got a good negotiation on the price and pretty excited about getting her home.

As someone more famous than me said "the Internet is a poor place to study from".

I know at least three people who have bought bikes from Red Baron without problems, maybe even a fourth?

Yes they can be a bit offhand with tire kickers or guys worried about spending 300B on a pair of 200B gloves...the same is or was often said about the woman at Paddock, but I've never had a problem there either. Do you have helmet X ? Yes. Try it on it fits. Do you have other colours ? Yes but didn't have the one I really liked. Oh well can't have everything "how much" paid and left.

If you want something they will get it for you, they haven't stayed in business for years by being complete rubbish.

Better to think inside the pub, than outside the box?

    +1!

If you need OEM parts for your Japanese bike it's hard to beat Red Baron for price and delivery time.

FWIW Red Baron is the largest motorcycle dealer network in Japan and Red Baron, Bangkok benefits greatly from this association.

I've no experience with them so can't share any experiences but bad press on the web is bad press. It is important to maintain the service that established the business in the first place. Improve it even.

I go into my local bike shops pretty regularly to see what's on offer and always met with friendly faces and a bit of chat. Then we talk about what's on offer down the pub and someone may be interested about a bike you saw and go check it out and buy something. It's like the free t-shirt advertising effect.

I'm listening to Miles Kane, he's pretty good.

It's supposed to be a wheelie monster- I hope you have a steady throttle hand.

It's much more of a hooligan machine than I thought you would actually buy.

I've liked them ever since I first saw one. I've always fancied a Triumph Scrambler too, they look completely different in the flesh. I'd love a Thunderbird Sport.

If I hadn't bought my Monster S2r I probably wouldn't have considered the Triple.

I'll get a HD when my back's fucked, it's balls to the wall for now

    ^ Congrats!

Have only ridden the Daytona 675 and that was a blast, but personally prefer naked bikes like the Street Triple.

    Keep her shiny side up!!

Excellent choice of bike, not sure about the name... Treat her tough, and she'll love you long time. Hope you have loads of fun on that beautiful piece of British art.

I've always liked the V-Max. Never rode one but I know they're full of beans. Designed for the straight Canadian roads I believe and not so great for cornering. Maybe a bit top-heavy but I have no doubt I could handle it.

First I've heard of Red Baron, will check them out, ta.
Just run the wife's Click down to my local mechanic and he has a V Max in for sale. With a book and around the 170 k mark. Had a quick blast up the road on it and the v power is still kicking in nicely. Not really that top heavy even for a 1500cc bike
Treat everyone as a complete and utter idiot and you can only ever be pleasantly surprised !
