    Stability control

I tied a car fitted with this, in Aust last.
Incredible, one can brake in any conditions at any speed and it pulls the car ups straight and true.
Be as stupid as you like and its sorts the car out.
How many lives would it save in Thailand? but it not available here as far as I know.
They really don't give a fvck about safety or lives.

I'll have to research that, thanks.

Can you basically explain how it works (the main components), availability and cost?

Cars are getting smarter and safer all the time.
But it takes time for F1 innovations to trickle down to entry lever cars.
If you want to see what a ford focus will have in 15 years, look at todays top of the line Merc.
Drove my ex bosses top of the line Merc and it had everythiing. Stability control, auto cruise control and lane holding, you could speed to a car stopped at a red light, take your hands off all controls and the car would brake by itself to a perfect stop.
The seats even tilted and folded in to support you in a high G turn.

The S-Class is the model to look at, to see what will be standard in the future.

No but it will bring them to a safe stop if they remember where the brake pedal is. When my wife drives and she is swearing and ranting at their driving, I have to remind here that these are fellow citizens.

Well my pickup has Drum brakes on the rear and a live rear axle, beat that for high tech? and no rear seatbelts, but they are only for the children and they should be able to sort it out for them selves in the event of a crash.
I should be grateful that I have ABS.

^ Mine has rear seatbelts but the missus keeps putting them behind the seat so it looks clean.
The other night after a very long drive with her pissing in my ear from the back seat with helpful driving tips I said to her "I don't care if we have an accident"
She asked why and I responded "Well Darling, apart from the fact that it will shut you the fuck up, I have a seatbealt and two airbags, you have fuck all and will be going straight through the windscreen"..

Electronic stability control - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Electronic Stability Control (ESC), also referred to as electronic stability program (ESP) or dynamic stability control (DSC), is a computerized technology [1][2] that improves the safety of a vehicle's stability by detecting and reducing loss of traction (skidding).[3] When ESC detects loss of steering control, it automatically applies the brakes to help "steer" the vehicle where the driver intends to go. Braking is automatically applied to wheels individually, such as the outer front wheel to counter oversteer or the inner rear wheel to counter understeer. Some ESC systems also reduce engine power until control is regained. ESC does not improve a vehicle's cornering performance; instead, it helps to minimize the loss of control. According to Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, one-third of fatal accidents could be prevented by the use of the technology.[4][5]

Its to stop idiots killing themselves in cars too powerful for their driving abilities.

Cars are way too powerful these days, nobody ever really needs two hundred bhp or top speeds of 150 mph.

Manufacturers charge you for the power, and then charge you again for the technology to stop you using it. Consumers have always been gullible, but automobile consumers must be the most gullible of them all to fall for the bullshite put out by the car companies.

in a land where flashing headlights is believed to prevent head on collision and solid or double yellow lines are for road decoration....

was coming back from Phuket two days ago along new four lane Pang Na to Krabi and here comes a black frickin Vigo straight at me....!!! Passed three trucks, all Vigos, parked in the jungle on the shortcut road PN to Krabi hwy...gotta wonder....

and the frickin bus driving...!!! Sigh

Guess bells and whistles are good but without basic common sense and driver training ..all somewhat redundant methinks.
SIL had her new Vigo 3 months before I informed her she had five gears....lol

Here in the states many base models have it as well as numerous other accessories and the cars are still less expensive, Thailand needs to begin with price and reduced taxes...

There are some very good implementations of VSC in several makes of cars and trucks available today.

They are most useful when road conditions are less than ideal (i.e. rain, snow, etc). However they cannot overcome the limits of physics, or the lack of common-sense. In four-wheel drive, most VSC's automatically disengage because they would neutralize the value of having 4 wheels trying to pull (they sense wheel-spin and stop applying power to the wheels that are spinning).

With good tires and common sense, they can help drivers get out of a jam by reducing wheel spin and selectively applying braking action and/or applying power as needed.

However they do add to the expense of the vehicle and will never prevent drivers from doing stupid things (like you see regularly in Thailand).

    Well said.
VSC can modify vehicle response, but not control ultimate physics. End of the day; if you're gonna rely on VSC to mask driver inability, don't be too surprised when the vehicle finds its 'own' way to the scene of the accident.
