My understanding is that it's related to the gearboxes. Moving an auto in neutral can damage the gearbox/engine. I think a lot of manufacturers recommend not towing an auto unless the drive wheels are hoisted.Originally Posted by Necron99

saying that, on my old saab you could not remove the key unless the manual gear was locked in gear. So when some little sod apparently spent a hour trying to steal my car. all he managed to do was fuck the key barrel and break the gear linakge. I watched the dealer change the barrel. they had to take the drivers seat out and then spend 15 minutes breaking off the bottom of the barrel with a large hammer and chisil. when the keys out, the bottom of the barrel is locked into a bracket welded to the car body.
ant out of curiosity what pissed the kwis's off most the terroism or the french government strong arming you into letting the terroists free.
Bit of both really. I was quite young at the time however I remember pretty clearly that the actual incident stirred up quite a bit of animosity (naturally). However later, particularly around the 'Club Med' farce of their 'imprisonment', I think that most of the animosity was actually directed at the NZ Govt. for allowing themselves to be so bullied.Originally Posted by hazz

But getting back to cars. what is it about thais and their obsession with luck, if she buys the car, she's calculated a list of just 4 dates over the next 3 months which are the lucky days! the rest are bad days

Its nice to see they understand their customers so well. I wonder if they give the cunts a free gun with everyone sold
Care to expand on your witty contribution

Mine was 14,000 baht per month, now it's hovering around 8,000baht.
Bangkok driving you do not need performance. You need comfort. Nice seats, quiet cabin, useful compartments, etc, etc......
Mine's about 1000 baht a month. See, Ford are miles betterer.Originally Posted by Exige

I think your understanding is slightly wrong. In Park, the transmission is locked and moving the car via its driven wheels can cause damage. In Neutral the driven wheels are free to rotate. However, with many modern automatic cars there is a time limit, when in the Neutral position, before Park is automatically selected. This means that the driven wheels should be raised during towing rather than selecting neutral.Originally Posted by AntRobertson
Locking the transmission via park is quite often used as a replacement for the handbrake and is similar to leaving a manual car in gear but for the opposite reasons. In Automatic the handbrake is used to relieve the load of the Park lug and to stop all wheels from turning. In a manual, putting the car in gear relieves the load on the handbrake mechanism...both being a good safety measure when parking on hills.
I remember chasing down a sports car in Atlanta once after the driver jumped out to refuel his car at a gas station. He was evidently used to an auto and left the car in neutral with handbrake off. The slope was enough for it to pick up a reasonable speed in the 50metres or so it took to jump in and grab the brake.
apologies for the trivia....
Could be, I don't really know that much about it too be honest. Just one of those things I've always heard but never really known the why's/how's/etc.Originally Posted by Troy
^A time limit? that's interesting, I still don't see the need for such elaborate measures. Is is perhaps more to do with making sure you are in park when you restart the engine?
Correct.Originally Posted by AntRobertson
I have first hand knowledge of a gearbox that was damaged in this manor.
The court case lasted years.
Never heard of that before.Originally Posted by Troy

That would create havoc in a lot of Thai car parks if you ca'nt push the car out of the way.
I think you meant the rear wheels (with a few exceptions)Originally Posted by Troy
