    Heart attack in KL

I'd bought an apartment here off plan about 15 years ago for no other reason than I liked the location. It's been let most of time and gives me an excuse to visit between tenants.

The most recent tenant vacated 3 ton4 months before the end of the tenancy. Experience has taught me to only let to large companies (no Chinese); this proved sensible and my rent has been paid through to August. So a trip to KL it was!

I flew on Qatar, but missed my connection at Doha. Was given a room at the airport hotel for 7 hours, but would not chose to fly with them again. The onward flight was in a dated business class seat. Overall patchy service.

I'd followed a normal routine for a couple of weeks here. A couple of nights out with a few drinks but mostly early nights with no booze. Basic, easy gym exercise every day and usually a massage on Changkat Bukit Bintang.

i was doing some DIY work on silicone resealing around a couple of shower areas at home, and found myself dripping in sweat. Not feeling too great I thought a cold shower relax with a foot massage in the fierce aircon of a massage shop would freshen my up before dinner. I felt too weak to walk the 800 m and had a painful tightness in my chest. I actually sat down and called a Grab.

feeling a bit better after 90 minutes' massage I sauntered back home, but it was a force of will to walk. Tired, I went to bed and slept through 12 hours, feeling better when I woke up.

So after a shower it was downstairs to the mall and a light breakfast with my laptop to deal with my ward council e mails (Im semi retired but UK district councillor).

I still had the chest pain, and walking back after breakfast felt very weak, but pushed on through it. Until my legs gave way and I was slumped on the floor of the posh mall with the locals walking by trying not to notice. Fortunately a New Zealand couple came by and offered water. They called over security and first aid. I was wheel-chaired into the first aid room, put on a bed and they did BP and temperature. They wanted to call an ambulance but in booked a Grab to go to Prince Court Medical. The grab arrived and refused to take me. So an ambulance was called and arrived within minutes. Very efficiently, in fact.

At PCMC i was admitted straight into ICU from Casualty. Bloods and ECG showed signs of a heart attack and my Bp was 200+/130.

Day 5 now and in HDU. I need to have angioplasty for four constricted arteries. My travel insurance has still not accepted a claim. I suspect my history of high BP will give them
    an excuse to reject.

The care here has been pretty good. I have a friend who happens to be a cardiologist in the UK. He's concurred with the cardiologist here.

I don't want to do the angioplasty here. It's another 30000myr which in itself is not the biggest issue. But any complications could mean that going upmby a factor of 10 and an extended stay in KL. The doc reckons i can be stabilised with meds over next ten days and ok to fly. So the plan is to book a non stop flight when Im fit to fly. Then overnight in UK and straight into theatre the following morning. I need the sign off to fly for liability issues. I don't want a legal claim against me for a medical diversion.

Some lessons learned. I hadn't given my insurance a second thought. I have a gold plated annual policy and UK private care separately.

Im feeling a lot better knowing I have an exit plan. Anyway, hoping to move off HDU to general care today. That'll be easier on the wallet.and hopefully out tomout patient follow up within a couple of days.

I didn't think much of the 'egg breakfast' option. So the next day opted for the optimistically titled 'bread basket'.

Hoping for a speedy recovery. I have similar health problems except the hypertension issues. Prescribed hypertension meds 7 years ago. No chest pains, just limited mobility.

    Get well soon.

I had the same symptoms about 10 months ago. Fortunately I only had 1 artery blocked and had an angioplasty about 6 hours after the onset.

Good luck and eat lots of avocados and garlic.

That's a long flight, L&F. Perhaps do a fair bit of walking around in the next ten days, and during the flight, just to keep the cardiovascular system nicely dilated ? We're all just pipes and tubes, aren't we ?

if your HBP is both being treated ( medication) and listed as a pre existing condition with your insurance company then they should accept your claim, and arrange for you to fly home for treatment accompanied by a medic. i would try and convince the docs in KL to recommend this to your insurance company.

heres hoping it all works out for you one way or another.

Best to ya L&F. Insurance nonsense and games always adds unwanted stress to an already stressful condition.

Thanks for the kind words and support.

I'm very fortunate to have a friend (who was also a hostage in Iraq with me) who's a cardiologist in the UK. He's liaising with my UK insurers to put me on the operating list the day after I arrive in the UK. Hopefully a few days' as outpatient on meds in KL and an overnight flight and it'll be sorted.

I'm looking at flight options. MH is the only non stop. Is there any meaningful advantage in booking the business suite instead of the business class on the A350? It's an extra 5000 MYR which, given everything else, I'd prefer not to spend.

The care at Prince Court has been very good. The cardiologist didn't even leave a bruise from the angiogram. The nursing care is generally good, with just a few lapses. The hospital has a Coffee Bean and a couple of other outlets in the foyer. I'm now moved to general care, out of both ICU and HDU, and able to wander down for a tea. I'm still a bit weak, and prone to dizziness if I push it. One day at a time!

    Wishing you a speedy recovery.

When I had my heart attack, I also ended up dripping sweat- so much that it went through my shirt and got the front of my tie damp. I was on my way to work, got there with crushing chest pains. Sadly I had had an attack of GERD a few years earlier, so passed it off as that. Took a meeting that was important (not in the big sense though!!!). My staff were extremely concerned. After the meeting I was going to go home to sleep it off. My staff literally forced me into one of their cars and drove me to the nearest hospital - where all hell broke out.

I was stabilized somewhat then an ambulance took me to the hospital where I get free treatment. You know your are in deep shit when they wheel you straight from the ambulance to the operating theatre.

The treating doc shouted at me when I told him how long the attack had lasted.....

As you went home and slept - you are actually a very, very lucky man...

Not being funny but you might want to be sitting where people can easily see you if anything did suddenly go wrong. If you suddenly slumped down in one of those suites, no one might notice you for a while.

Never conversed with you Lostandfound but truly praying for you, God Bless!

My wife and I are maybe looking to buy a place in KL to escape the Thai summers in our retirement. I know its still hot down there but 33 with rain every night and no pollution is a hell of a lot better. Great food, booze, people and hiking on your doorstep etc we really love KL, especially the walk we do from Taman Tugu and then down through Perdana and into the CBD for a drink and some food.

Firstly, best wishes for a full and speedy recovery lostandfound.

As far as I can gather, the business class suite is the MA equivalent of first class on the A350. I am not sure what is priced into the ticket but if it includes an easy path through the airport and on to the plane then it may well be worth it. It saves possible aggravation that you really do not need in your condition. Some airlines also include travel to/from airport and this could also be well worth the money. On board you will receive personal attention and be well looked after so I wouldn't worry about no one noticing if something should happen to you on the flight.

If it is outside the comfort zone re cost, then I would go for a window seat in business class. It's a 1-2-1 configuration so you have plenty of privacy with a window seat and it extends to a full bed to allow you a comfortable journey.

Safe flight and all the best!
