    Probiotics for Weight Loss?

    Believe it or not, the human body contains more bacteria living inside than individual cells: 100 trillion microorganisms live in our gastrointestinal tract as compared with a "mere" 10 trillion human cells in our body. And one of the best kinds of microorganisms we can have flourishing inside our bodies are the probiotics, the healthy bacteria that live in our intestines or gut. Now, new research from the Stanford University School of Medicine and Stanford Hospital and Clinics suggests probiotics might even enhance weight-loss programs.
    The Stanford researchers first noticed the beneficial effects of probiotics on weight when working with extremely obese patients who've had gastric-bypass surgery. But studies are showing that the benefits of probiotics are not limited to those who've had this medical procedure.
    So why are probiotics assisting with weight loss? Several studies have suggested that the guts of normal-weight people contain a different mix or balance of the types and amounts of bacteria that are found in the intestines of overweight folks. One study even found these same imbalances among the microorganisms in 7-year-old kids who were overweight.
    Could it be that bad bacteria are causing at least some of our weight issues? Is it possible that one day we'll just ingest a dollop of "weight-friendly" bacteria to bring our body size under control?
    It's too soon to know exactly where this discovery will lead, so here are my recommendations:
    • Be sure to include foods in your diet that contain probiotics, such as yogurt.
    • Avoid brands of yogurt that have the "fruit" at the bottom and instead go with low-fat, low-sugar varieties that contain plenty of protein and calcium. A cup of yogurt is a great snack to hold you over in between meals or after a workout. Greek yogurts are especially high in protein.
    • Make prebiotics part of your regular diet as well. Prebiotics--tiny fibers found in some fruits and vegetables--just happen to be what probiotics and other good bacteria eat. Good sources of prebiotics include wheat, bananas, onions, garlic, and leeks. (Europeans eat far more prebiotics than do people in the U.S--might this explain part of the weight discrepancy between the U.S. and European populations?)
    • If you have digestive issues, be sure to talk with your doctor or dietitian about "pharmaceutical-grade" probiotics, which are the equivalent of prescription-strength good bacteria.
    Last, a caveat: Don't even think about starting to load up on probiotics so that you can slack off on exercise or ignore your healthy eating plan. There is no miracle probiotic cure in the pipeline!

    I am the happiest guy on the forum........but there is not a gay bone in my body. I think I am too old for the metro-sexual movement, but there is nothing wrong with looking your best, no?

    I just want to live as long as can with the highest quality of life I can have. I also like to share what I read with others that are thinking about their health. I actually get a lot of positive feedback in greens and comments when I post the health stuff. So since it seems to be appreciated I post it.

    I am thinking of making my own pro biotic yogurt in the future.

    Sure wish they would have live culture yogurt on the market here instead of this sugar filled pasteurized shit.
    There is a guy makes it in CM, but it is some nasty shit, but better than nothing and I have Asidopholis shipped in from the states at a great cost in freight.

    I get a plain pro-biotic yogurt made in Thailand called Prairie Farms. It is the freshest made that I could find.

    I think I could use that as a starter culture right?

    Yes, we can!

    Yoghurt contains live cultures that can be used as a starter for your own yoghurt. One self made yoghurt can then be used for the next. However it may be better to buy a fresh yogurt after some time. You never know if some less desireble strains get in eventually.

    I did it as an experiment for fun. Pasteureized milk is good. I cooked half of the milk and mixed it with the cool other half. That got me a good temperature for the yoghurt. Mix in the starter, and mix in some dried milk powder if you want it not so liquid. Then i put the mix into some baby formula glasses and wrapped it well to keep the temperature up. Actually I put it into my bed with thick bedcover but that may be not necessary in a warmer climate. Starting it in the morning it was finished in the afternoon ready to go into the fridge.

    There was a farang broad from the states that was coming over here, I had given her our phone number to call if she got in a jam while here, she came in on a bus and called for us to pick her up in town, my wife was pissed off and said fuck her, I ain't a travel service and she can fuck her self, anyway sunee went and picked her up and brought her to our house and I would not talk to her, anyway she made some yogurt and gave some to sunee, she was there for a couple of days and then she left on a bus for BKK, got food poisoning thetre and returned home.
    I have not offered to help anyone since then.
    But I read that you can ise one of the large styrofoam boxes for a culture oven and heat it with a pan of hot water and it will work too, I have a shit load of the big ones from my shipments from SFS, if I could get a culture, but would buy yogurt at the shop if they had any that was live culture.
    I got it in the stores in the states for my kid.

    There's a yogurt available at Carefour which is plain and unsweetened. It's great stuff but sells out really quick.

    I've seen it also at the Carefour on Rama4.

    In Patong they put it on the shelf saturday and is usually gone by monday. When I see it I buy a half dozen containers, It keeps for weeks in the fridge. My pal here uses it as a starter culture and says it works fine.
    I used to freeze a good starter culture in an ice cube tray and just pop out one cube to start a new batch.

    You can buy live 'yoghurt' in every 7/11, Meiji, or a couple of other brands. It's liquid but is a live culture of Lactobacillus Acidophillus. Sold next to milk and sweetened dead yoghurts. Pale orange colour.

    Won't help with weight loss, just flatulence and bloating. You could use it to make your own yoghurt though.

    I've done the home yohgurt thing. It does work. Actually I didn't heat up milk just added a plain Dannon yoghurt to a large milk from Lotus. It definitely works so if you are into yogurt go for it. Actually reading this thread has got me interested again. Maybe I will do up another one.

    Yoghurt is good for your digestion and bowels. But the probiotic thing is not much more than an advertising gimmick. Any plain yoghurt will do.

    Making it yourself is ok, I did it too for a while. But the price will decide if it is really worthwile. Here in Germany yoghurt is cheap unless you go with an expensive name brand with fancy advertising. I prefer buying yoghurt instead as the amounts used are not so high. Also the selfmade usually is more liquid than the yoghurt you can buy.

    Some of the Squeeze shops sell a yogurt with probiotics in it for 20 baht. Not all but some. It was pretty tasty, but the packaging is awful. It is a bottle with a narrow mouth that you can't get a spoon in. Actually they give you a straw to slurp it out with. Who in their right mind would expect anyone to eat yogurt thru a straw?

    When buying this Yoghurt, it has to be sugar free correct? To get the benefits of the priotiotics, because the sugar negates the positives?

    How much of a serving per day is needed/recommended? How much yoghurt per day? Good not helping.

    And just what are the health benefits of yogurt?

    First off, your body needs to have a healthy amount of ''good'' bacteria in the digestive tract, and many yogurts are made using active, good bacteria. One of the words you’ll be hearing more of in relation to yogurt is ''probiotics.'' Probiotic, which literally means ''for life,'' refers to living organisms that can result in a health benefit when eaten in adequate amounts.

    Miguel Freitas, PhD, medical marketing manager for Dannon Co., says the benefits associated with probiotics are specific to certain strains of these "good" bacteria. Many provide their benefits by adjusting the microflora (the natural balance of organisms) in the intestines, or by acting directly on body functions, such as digestion or immune function. (Keep in mind that the only yogurts that contain probiotics are those that say "live and active cultures" on the label.)

    And let us not forget that yogurt comes from milk. So yogurt eaters will also get a dose of animal protein (about 9 grams per 6-ounce serving), plus several other nutrients found in dairy foods, like calcium, vitamin B-2, B-12, potassium, and magnesium.

    To a point that I now include some Apple Cider Vinegar which helps overall with the gut balance.
