    Unhappy Aircon Hayfever

My nose is sore and itchy from constantly blowing my nose into T-Shirts from the laundry basket.

The mucus is dripping from my nostrils like it's salty water and my nose is blocked.

I suffer regular sneezing fits so intense I can almost taste the metallic hint of blood in the spray.

    My eyes itch.

I suppose it might be time to clean the AC filter.

I often get those symptoms when travelling by air

I think "bugger, I am getting a cold", then later, when my head has suddenly cleared, I realise I have yet again been poisoned by the airlines bad maintenance

Don't have any idea where you are now scampy, But if you are here, go to the drug store and buy a bottle of "Flixonase" called flonase in the states and made by GSK. I found it here last week. directions included
Also take 10 mg tab of zyrtec once or twice a day. that should fix ya up.

    An interesting topic.

As it so happens, the copper industry is currently developing the next generation of hygienic ultra-compact evaporators.

This may not help your immediate need, Scamp, but it will be a blessing for
    future generations.

Let me suggest that you buy a water pick (normally used for shooting water between teeth). Make a solution of salt water and shoot it up your nose. It will clear your nose right away and also help prevent any further problems.

I run mine 24/7, even when it is cool enough that the unit doesn't kick in but acts as an air filter, I have the alergy thing too.

Yeah I'm on the Zyrtec and seems to have done the trick.

I made some watercress soup too and it was really delicious.

I see you folks are talking about Sinus remedies, let me tell you the secret formula, for serious sinus sufferers:

    1. Rhinocort Aqua 64 mcg/dose (budesonide) - AstraZenica (~ B 350)
    2. Claritex (or equivalent) local tablet (Claritine local equivalent)

    Dosage:
Rhinocort 2 sprays in each nostril morning & evening
Claritex 1 tablet morning & evening

The Rhinocort may take a few days to settle your sinuses, but once it does, you're good to go. Do this every day for a few months & then gradually halve dose. Monitor progress & adjust as necessary.

In the interim, reduction of mucus & sinus inflammation - use pseudoepedrine (60mg) tablets (Actifed, or local equivalant), to control the sinus swelling.

From a long-term sinus sufferer, this treatment has allowed me to live a fairly normal life. I taper off from the treatment at 'quiet' times of the year, & then ease back in under periods of high stress, or attack.

I read somewhere that Actifed no longer contains pseudoephedrine.
Ask for Sulidine if you are in LOS and don't drink alcohol.
Two beers and you will be spaced out. (see my attempted posts a few days back when I found this out)

^ News to me. As far as say 3 months ago the Actifed label - in Thailand at least - contained pseudoephedrine.

Nasolin - a local variant states:
    Triprolidine HCL 2.5mg
    Pseudoepedrine HCL 60 mg

Be careful of the pseudoephedrine if you have a heart condition - it can lead to palpitations. Only use it topically, when your sinuses are extremely stressed, or before flying in aircraft.

"The original formula for Actifed contained pseudoephedrine hydrochloride 60mg as the nasal decongestant and triprolidine hydrochloride 2.5mg as the antihistamine. However, in response to widespread laws requiring products containing pseudoephedrine to be kept behind the pharmacy counter, Pfizer changed Actifed's formula in late 2006 to contain chlorpheniramine maleate 4mg as the antihistamine and phenylephrine HCl 10mg as the nasal decongestant. Many users of the old formula have complained that the new formula is not as effective at relieving their symptoms."

Might still be OK in LOS though

I got some actifed for the kid awhile back and it still had it in it,
I can't take it tho, 1 might be OK but then after that it makes me drowsy but also insomnia for a week after I quit it, so not for me, but the Flixonase/flonase works fine and was given to me by a doc in the states after I had got a real sinus infection from mold in my house in Mexico, works better than rhinocort.

Today I had to go to the docs for it, I had an injection in my bum and 5 bags of pills.

I was supposed to be going out with Blake and Butterfly but I'll have to cancel and Blake will think it's because I am under the thumb.

Yeah this is the trick, only you don't quite need to go this far, you may blow some brain tissue out with this method me thinks. Ever since doing this type of maintenance, for me, I have had very few attacks and I used to have them all the time and they would escalate into serious sinus infections..

Just buy a nose dropper or better yet a small squeeze bottle of some kind preferably one that has a fine spray and some sterile saline at the local Tesco, Tops, pharmacy etc. tip your head way back and let her rip. Do this every morning as part of your morning routine. It is a little difficult to get used to that feeling of the water in your nose like your going to drown but once you do, your good to go. Take care to keep the saline sterile by not contaminating the whole bottle of course.

Additionally for stronger attacks see if you can find a Pseudoephedrine product that doesn't make you drowsy or most importantly is non-drying as this prevents your sinuses from draining and drink plenty of water not doing so is what causes infections.

I have my Mom send a couple of packages of extra strength Sudafed non-drowsy, non-drying over every few months, otherwise I would die as the regular formula does make me jumpy and my heart pound while this one doesn't.

Strangely though I used to have far more attacks when I lived in South Florida than I do here, I haven't had a significant attack in over 4 years since being here. I have narrowed it down to the colder weather there in the fall and winter with the blustery winds and the local pine trees dropping pollen. I discovered an allergy to pine pollen years ago and Orange pollen both of which are heavy there, but mold is definitely a severely overlooked problem everywhere, especially here..

JFYI Those other remedies noted all work on different people, but having to take so much medicine is not only costly but obviously not good for you especially your liver (and most people here probably don't have much left of that organ anyway ) so a drug free or drug reduced remedy seems to be the wisest choice IMO..

every time ive visited thailand , ive picked up some sort of nasal infection
i put it down to the air in the cabin of the plane ( in cattle class)
thai air use the old 747,s
    their the worse (imo)
the newer planes seem better to me
as for air-con in hotel looms , imo, as well as cool the loom, it also dryes the air out ,which give one a sore throat , ---
    an air-con unit,
takes in the natural air in, and passes it through a matrix which is cold
this part of the unit takes all the natural moisture out of the air ,
as well as doing its job(hence the ice formed within it and the need for the unit to reverse the freon gas to heat the matrix to remove the frost/ice periodically)_
when ever i stay in a hotel in los i place some water near each aircon unit (on a wide plate)
it evaporates very quickly into the loom
    so rehydrating the surroundings

This sounds like it could be adapted for use in the fight against Dripping Dick Syndrome !
