Thread: Best Restaurant in Chiang Mai?

Last night the old girl made me take her out to dinner.The place we went to is bloody nice.

It's called Houn Soontaree.It's prolly 5-6km north of the city on the western side of the Ping.

Mainly Lanna style food.Absoulutly delicious.fair size portions and reasonable prices.Couldn't fault the food.

The owner, a shelia by the name of Soontaree Vechananont is also a famous Thai singer.There is live music...Lanna style etc.All very nice if you like thayt sort of thing.I suppose you could call the place romantic, as there are candles/Lanterns and stuff everywhere........





There were a few token farang,but mainly Thai people.The eye candy was just terrific too.

They have a web site (Which is where these pics are from)It's in Thai and is a shocker,but it gives directions etc and tells you the story about the place. saochiangmai.com

Anyway,great place to take the missus if you are in the dogbox or if you are trying to impress a young bit of skirt.

That is very useful information, LC. I've heard good reports of this place but never been myself. Cheers.

I have been there several times in fact but the place was just recently moved to it's new location. The food there is excellent, next time you go I would recommend the yum nuea (Beef Thai spicy salad) it is awsome. I dont know if she sang the night you were there but Soontaree also sings daily usually around 8:30. I think it is well known amongst Thais in Chiang mai that if you want to go somewhere romantic with a lady, that is where you go.

^Yep,she sang last night..at the new venue.Also had a word with her when we were leaving.Very nice lady.

Found the new place while lookin for a house. Haven't been to eat there though. I liked the old place though, kinda funky right down on the river. Not much room though I'm sure she'll do better at the new place. lots of direct parking. Looks kind of big. Have to try it out soon. If I remember it's still along the river right? Seating near the water?

yep..same side just a little bit along from the old place.Only 500yards from where i live,so will be quite handy!

The food's good, the wandering minstrels are only mildly irritating, and the view was spectacular the last time I was there - we sat and watched a thunderstorm over the city.

Is that the one near the reservoir, close to wat u-mong? That place is great.

LOL, I thought I was the only one with this problem.

Ermm..time for a plug..my Missus has just brought a Thai restaurant in CM. Brought it because we were regular customers and the food was so so good (Thai) and cheap!!

Any TD members that want to visit us would be more than welcome

Its called PAT RESTAURANT (silly name I know-but hey whats in a name if the nosh is good?)..one TD member has been already..and haf a bottle of Rum left in the cupboard says he'll be back!!

Its a little way out of town hence the tarrif being so low, the most expensive dish is 150 Baht, Chang is 55 Baht as the lowest price beer.

If you fancy a visit you will find the place just off the Hang Dong Road, first set of traffic lights past Tesco Lotus turn right, and a klik on the left right next to the new Siratara Condo....signs are in Thai , but you cant miss it what with all the fairy lights...has a lovely cool roof-top dining terrace with live soft music every night, open 5pm till very late...maybee see a few of you guys sometime I hope..always closes on the 6th of the month Well the Lady needs a LITTLE time off eh???

The THB150 is for a whole fresh fishie...done on the cook on the table jobie/thingie.Bloody nice too.

You know it's a good place when it's chokka full of Thais etc.Fozzie told me he pays the chef a very,very high wage...and rightly so.her blood is worth bottling!

I will look forward to seeing you ....but LC told me that you were quite a handy golfer....I have just taken it up again after a 3 year lay-off owing to back problems ....maybee you would fancy a game once I improve a bit?

The food was great and also excellent music.
I don't recall the name but it's a very popular spot too.

I haven't seen carrot somtam before, sounds good.

Chiang Mai sounds cool!

^In South Australia, where green papaya is hard to come by but carrots plentiful and cheap, Mrs did carrot Som Tam all the time. She's from Ubon.

Haun Suntaree, is famous because of the atmosphere and the owner of the place is the legendary singer of Thai Lanna 'Suntaree Waychanon'. But in the point of CM people like me the place is so so. There're couple more places that could call better. Pha Lad is so expensive. What can i say i'm just a normal poor Thai.

Ok yea it is a terrific place.
The special sauces they had were something I hadn't seen anywhere else.

I bought several CDs of thai traditional music which the ladies here love.
