Thread: Original Coffee

What is original Thai coffee? [at]The stuff you get from the street vendors. What goes with it? Condensed milk, Carnation pasteurised [at]milk? Drunk lorn out of a small shot glass and yen in a plastic bag when poured over ice cubes? I assume the Arabica beans from up north are a fairly recent development so the "ancient" coffee came from the South? And are robusta beans?



Local coffee aficionados are a dime a dozen these days and it's all about the hill tribes. But what did everyone do before the advent of the espresso machine and social media?

Its Nescafe. Probably not what you wanted to hear, but thats what the shite is.

Glad to see the Thai's are now getting to grips with decent Coffee though.

I like Nescafe. Simple easy and tasty as long as you put in enough.

Fuk the coffee fashionistas and the absurd trade in oneupmanship that's swamped the world.

Personally, never found a single street vendor in Thailand who wasn't serving up anything more than instant coffee with carnation milk. Sure there's probably the odd (very odd) vendor in places like Bangkok and Chiang Khan who serve up local brews, but in 16 years, I've never seen it. Whenever the vendors use the sock filter, it's usually for Char Boran (local tea).

Used to be one in Din Daeng which I stopped at regularly. Coffee, pa thong kor and the slightly sweet doughnut type kanoem, salapow I think. These days it's the duck restaurant in Bo Phloi. But if the old man is not there, the water is either not hot enough or I just get "mai mee" and one of those smiles.

Vietnamese coffee sucks. It's all robusta and they mix it with something as well.

Ive bought some pretty decent coffee and a Vietnamese drip filter from this outfit in Bangkok before. Ordered online and delivered within a couple days to Isaan. Very nice coffee for a blend.
