    Original Coffee

What is original Thai coffee? [at]The stuff you get from the street vendors. What goes with it? Condensed milk, Carnation pasteurised [at]milk? Drunk lorn out of a small shot glass and yen in a plastic bag when poured over ice cubes? I assume the Arabica beans from up north are a fairly recent development so the "ancient" coffee came from the South? And are robusta beans?

Local coffee aficionados are a dime a dozen these days and it's all about the hill tribes. But what did everyone do before the advent of the espresso machine and social media?

Its Nescafe. Probably not what you wanted to hear, but thats what the shite is.

Glad to see the Thai's are now getting to grips with decent Coffee though.

I like Nescafe. Simple easy and tasty as long as you put in enough.

Fuk the coffee fashionistas and the absurd trade in oneupmanship that's swamped the world.

I love a good but I don't mind a nescafe instant (not that 3 in one shit) in the morning before work.
I like to buy the beans and grind them myself and use a drip filter method though they say the french press is best.
I'd like to try drying and roasting my own beans if I could find some raw ones.

Fair enough, but why bother? 2 teaspoons of Nescafe and a sweetener, job done.

Some maybe but not all. This is what I found:
"It’s a local tradition. Developed during WWII, it was the answer to scarce—and expensive—coffee. In order to reduce consumption, grains were added during the roasting process. The coffee typically contains dark roasted robusta with brown sugar, corn, brown rice, sesame, soy beans, salt, butter, or even tamarind seeds. Similar to the Vietnamese coffee. But the brewing method is what differentiates it. Ground coffee is put in a cotton bag filter or a ‘sock filter’ and steeped in boiling water. Sweetened, condensed, or evaporated milk is then added" and I am afraid that is me done and dusted.

Personally, never found a single street vendor in Thailand who wasn't serving up anything more than instant coffee with carnation milk. Sure there's probably the odd (very odd) vendor in places like Bangkok and Chiang Khan who serve up local brews, but in 16 years, I've never seen it. Whenever the vendors use the sock filter, it's usually for Char Boran (local tea).

Used to be one in Din Daeng which I stopped at regularly. Coffee, pa thong kor and the slightly sweet doughnut type kanoem, salapow I think. These days it's the duck restaurant in Bo Phloi. But if the old man is not there, the water is either not hot enough or I just get "mai mee" and one of those smiles.

Vietnamese coffee sucks. It's all robusta and they mix it with something as well.
    Don't like it at all.

Ever noticed that those that who grow coffee, and their respective regions, don't care for it [except Ethiopia] nor ravish the dark elixir as they might in the West...??

Ive bought some pretty decent coffee and a Vietnamese drip filter from this outfit in Bangkok before. Ordered online and delivered within a couple days to Isaan. Very nice coffee for a blend.

How many Kilos of the green Rubusta beans do you want. Grown here in the Trat mountains, clean water, no pesticides, hand picked by maidens of good character....

This years harvest, not 20year old beans.

    Just let me know.

Every village market has the Thai coffee in a sock here. Taste awful but it is ground beans.

As others have said it's mostly Robusta in Vietnam. French Coffee is a "roast", i.e. it's how the green beans are roasted. No coffee is grown in France.

It's a cash crop. Like many countries the cash crop is for revenue not consumption. Can they afford yet another addiction/vice??
