Thai Food, what is this?

Often we see stuff at the market or even Thai restaurants that we have no idea whether it is meat, vegetable, fruit, or even if it is edible, at first I quickly assumed this was squid, but it isn't is it, luckily I didn't buy or eat any of it, so anybody know what it is?



Intestines of some sort? All got little black bits in.

I've been told they are Luk Chin - Fish balls, only a different shape

Wife and kids go for look chin pla as well. Seems they might be of higher quality than the usual ones. I dont know.

ahhh, should have guessed that myself, certainly the right colour and consistency for fish balls, occassionally by mistake I get them in the old noodle soups, sort of taste ok but not like fish I would normally eat.

^ thats why they make them into balls. its all the grotty parts of the fish that noone wants to eat.

Not Thai but Vietnamese, not being a great fruit eater I have no idea what this maybe, any of you got an idea of what fruit this is?

Gac Fruit

Gac Fruit, never heard of them before.

Right, some Thai dessert or sweets, at least these were for sale in Bangkok but being in the shape of rose petals I can't imagine they are of Thai origin.

Here is the whole stall, doesn't look like your typical Thai dessert or sweet stall.



They look nice, lovely gayish pink colour, but really don't strike me as being a Thai thing, anybody know about these?

Some kind of marzipan? No idea... Maybe similar to the sweets you posted a picture of before that looked like small fruits. Were they expensive?

In the background, the disc shaped food I think may be rice cakes (flattened sticky rice)? Sometimes I see people selling things like that at the traffic lights.

But I don't think roses are a natural plant for Thailand, so why the rose petal design on what maybe a Thai sweet or dessert, normally they stick to traditional fruits and vegetables to copy as sweets etc.

Again I really don't know... just a guess.

I lived in Sri Racha before, I could count the number of 'falang' I saw on 1 hand yet my missus still came back with imitation american snacks from the market... even found a chicken kebab one day!

The sign says khanom ar-lua, which are made from flour with a hard sugary coating and, if Wikipedia is to be believed, they were introduced into Thailand by the Portuguese three centuries ago.

Just raided the fridge couple of ingredients,one easy the other not so easy.

Ask your Thai cook about the higher quality ones and you'll find out that they contain Borax.

Tha Chang Market in Bangkok, the stall also had what looked like a pan of boiled bananas, a pan of boiled red things, and this, so what is it?
