    Renovating a well....

Anyone ever hand dug out their well to add rings to it ?

Currently we have 9 rings, want to sink another 4 if possible, but have to do it by hand only.

Seems the knobs that built it did not do it properly and it is now suffering. Slow fill up times and quick pump out times.

Have done it with the smaller rings for a septic, just wondering if any tricks for a well. Don't really want a dead well digger at the bottom of me well.
I like poisoning my neighbours dogs till they die cos I'm a cnut

We had the same problem, the cause was the drop in the water table. We were able to dig the well deeper by hand, one guy in the bottom digging a bucket on a rope for excavating, we added a depth of three rings, for the last ring the guy digging would dissapear under water then come up with a bucket full of muck. We were able to find concrete rings slightly smaller o.d. than the i.d of the current rings. This was done about two years ago and have not had a problem since. We only use the well for irrigation.

    Cheers.

We have a submersible pump we can put in there to keep the water out while they dig, so should be easier.

That would be ideal, we used an extension ladder for the digger to enter the well,, which we pulled out while digging and a couple of ropes to lower the rings.

    Lower the rings ??

Sit the rings on top and dig away at the bottom and the weight will/should see them settle downwards right ?

There is a film by Fred Dibnah showing how to do this!
Fred Dibnah - Dig With Dibnah . Listed on Pirate bay at the moment! Very good.

You can check out my vid of building it in the survivor thread.....first one I think.

As for compaction, yes possibly. But the water table is quited high so think only the top 2 rings would have this problem and the lower ones are always moist.
