That said, Rhode Island Reds are pretty birds and can be mean as hell. Growing up we had some. We raised them to eat. We never raised chickens as pets or to lay eggs, way too much work. My Mom would say. "Please got get a chicken for dinner". I'd walk out, lop a head off one with a hatchet, hold it by its feet until done flapping and pluck it. Took about 10 minutes.

This wasn't as easy I'd expected.

I tried to get a firm grip around the neck but it was impossible to keep the head still.

Most of the medicine ended up on my arms, but the good news is that the chicken appears to be on the mend and was happily pecking away at food this morning.

I have a neighbor just around the corner who has 6 geese. Not sure the bred but they are definitely great watch your place birds. Every time I ride my bike by they start honking. And I agree, duck and goose eggs are much tastier.
