So Katie, you have a black lesbian hen with gender issues?

If them has a disability as well, get they on a boat to the UK and them's set up for life.

I had a surprise today. I was collecting the eggs and one of the jungle fowl hens had a new chick.

Could he grow up to be the perfect cock? Or maybe 'he's' a girl?

And another! She sat on three eggs and so far two out of three have hatched. I'm just hoping that she was sitting on her own eggs and not from one of the bantams.

They look good and must be very happy.

I know that I would be; just getting out of that egg and finally strechting your legs.

My mate Ootai called last night because his cock had caught a disease and he wondered if I could help.

It just so happens that I have a beautiful big white cock which I said I'd hold for Ootai to take care of.

Sadly, circumstances have changed and Ootai can no longer take on my cock so I'm not sure what to do with it.

Incidentally, this white cock will be a cross between Nelson, our resident jungle fowl cock and most likely a red egg layer hybrid hen (Warren hen?). Over the years I have noticed that the first generation jungle fowl/red egg layer offspring often come out completely white. Any progeny from this white cock should be good egg layers.

^ He is, thanks Cyrille and it would have been the best cock Ootai's had in a while.

He's been a very late developer and I thought he was female until I caught him shagging a hen last week.

The cockerel, that is. Not ootai.

This Ootai fella seems to be quite the cockmeister. Where did you meet him, Mendip? How did the relationship flourish?

^ I can see what you're doing with these 'cock' innuendos. I 'met' him on TD and we have been to each other's houses on several occasions.

'Flourish' seems like an odd word but we have a lot in common from back in WA and here in Isaan.

Just one of those things, I guess.

Despite being an Aussie he's not too bad.

It's nice to have folks around with shared interests that you get along with. I just have the wife, we have no shared interests and don't get along very often. Having said that, she was talking to me today which felt a bit strange.

You wife, Mendip, is she back from her short break?

Is that a Frey Bentos steak & kidney pie? You look after your chicks very well!

^ Short break? She's had a 17 year break yet still complains. It doesn't bother me though...

I've gone off the Frey Bentos pies since trying their All Day Breakfast Pie, which was disgusting. Although I have to admit that their pie tins make excellent animal feeding receptacles.

A few days ago we had a new clutch of chicks hatch and as is typical when a free meal is available, today we had a lovely radiated rat snake pay a visit. These are also known as 'racers' and are often used in the snake shows alongside cobras because they are extremely aggressive and continually strike... but are harmless. The radiated rat snake is probably my favourite snake and this one was around 1.8m, or 6 ft in real money.

As you can see in the background, Ootai let me down badly a couple of weeks ago and said that he couldn't take on my big white cock, so I have kept hold of it here for now.

Nelson and 'Whitey' seem to get along well and so far haven't fought, so I'm happy to keep him for the time being.

The radiated rat snake has a hollow tongue so that it can still breathe while swallowing a particularly large item of prey. Not bragging, but I have had a couple of girlfriends who would have benefited from the same evolutionary development.

How this snake ran the gauntlet of seven dogs to safely reach the chicken run is a mystery. It went back to safety over the wall and is one lucky snake!

I don't often compare myself to the POTUS but we do have one thing in common. At Christmas I like to pardon a few chickens and give them a good life back at the chicken run. Egg production has been down lately as well, so it was good timing.

The daughter picked three and we took them home for a new life.

Bringing new chickens home is a big occasion for the whole family! The dogs see the chickens every single day yet each morning it's like they've never seen them before.

There is a slight back story to this...

You may notice a white mark on the back of my head. I first noticed this tonight as I uploaded the pictures for this post.

I felt the back of my head and found this foul-smelling sticky gunge stuck in my hair. This got me thinking, and I remembered standing outside the gardener's house this morning when some liquid splashed on my arm. I looked up to see the rear end of a pigeon protruding from the guttering and though 'dirty bastard', washed my arm off and thought no more about it.

It now seems that I've spent the entire day walking around with pigeon shit splattered across the back of my head. I went in to town with the daughter, went food shopping, went to the chicken shop but worst of all, when we got back I took Lola up to see PJG and Moodeng. I spent an hour chatting to PJG with a dirty great pigeon shit stuck to the back of my head. I asked Jess if she had noticed it earlier, and she said, 'oh yeah, I wondered what that was'.

    I mean, FFS.

Anyway, once in the chicken run I prepared to release Santa, Elf and Turkey to live with the others.

    The lucky three.

That's Santa on the left, or is that Turkey? Or maybe even Elf?

I just love doing this. On release, this is the first time these guys (gais! ) have ever experienced space and they take off, flapping their wings. A joy to see. Most of their siblings will have gone to battery farms, hell on earth in any country but an order of magnitude worse in this part of the world.

It wasn't long until the flock came over to investigate. The three newbies are on the right.

Nelson of course was straight in there doing a little shimmy around them, eyeing up new opportunities...

And then came along my spectacular big white cock to introduce himself.

I would normally only keep one cock but for some reason Nelson accepts this white cock and there have been no fights at all. He's been a resident for so long he is on the verge of being named... maybe 'Cow' .

It is nice to have such a big, pure white cock that is completely void of any marks or blemishes. To be honest, I think it's pretty unique.

And ask your daughter NOT to tell your wife !

    In other news:

Unilever has recalled certain Dove, Nexxus, Suave, TIGI and TRESemmé aero dry shampoos because of the potential presence of benzene, a chemical that can cause cancer.

After just one day the three new arrivals were guided by their natural instincts to roost above the ground. They're not strong enough to get up into the metal beams of the roof yet.

I think this is lovely to see. The life of a battery hen is indeed horrific and denies the birds any kind of natural behaviour whatsoever.

Not sure if its the Holiday Monday Irish coffee but your Jontee spirit house is at a very "Jaunty" angle rather like th eccentric ole brothers grocery store in Long Ashton!
Went on a Spoonerism run to the P.O. but seems it's a holiday coz they there was a constution in 1932 or yesterday any such excuse

I could send Jack or you could promote

    "Leaning Tower of Mendy"

perhaps PJG can give you a hand to get it up properly ?

It's not looking very erect at the moment, it must be said.

I secured it with wire against the wire mesh side of the chicken run. The top bit of the old spirit house makes a perfect nest box for broody hens.

The three new arrivals slept in this morning until I rudely woke them to take a photo. I guess they're enjoying a nice comfortable perch and the fresh air.

I seem to have bonded with one of my new hens. I'm not sure which one she is but I'm probably going to rename her anyway, as is my way with any special hens we get.

I could see that one of the new hens wasn't doing so well. It can be a bit overwhelming joining a new flock and bullying is par for the course to establish the pecking order, but for some reason this girl wasn't adapting.

I've taken her under my wing () a bit, and whenever I visit, first I put her at the water station to make sure that she's hydrated and then hand feed her for a while. To be honest, I think that we both benefit from this intimacy.

She now expects this every visit and has started jumping up onto my knee for some special attention. It's getting to the stage that I feel guilty leaving the chicken run because this lovely bird gazes at me and clucks sadly as I leave. That hasn't happened around here for a long time.

Doesn't have to be pecking order

If the flock sense that she is weak and therefore a danger to the flock's survival, they'll first try to make her leave, which she can't, and then kill her.

    All in the genes

    I hope you are right

^ There doesn't seem to be anything overly malicious about it and I don't think this is anything more than establishing the pecking order, but I'll keep an eye on things. I'm taking the daughter to Bangkok next week so want everything settled before I leave.

I checked up on her this morning and she ran straight up to me. I sat down with her while the two other new hens watched on.

I think she just enjoys my company and sitting on my lap. I've renamed her 'Lolita', seeing as I couldn't remember which one she was, anyway.

I have found that having a dominant cock helps to keep the hens under control.

Nelson, our splendid pure-bred jungle fowl is the undisputed boss of the flock.

And there's also my magnificent big white cock which has never let me down yet.

We also have two young cocks at the moment who are destined for new homes in the next week or so. They are becoming feisty and upsetting the flock dynamics.

This handsome chap looks as though he may be another pure jungle fowl.

And this juvenile looks to have the potential to grow into a big black cock. He has to go.

I think that Lolita will be just fine.
