    Crane Fledgling Found

Found this baby bird in the garden this morning. Apparently uninjured, but unable to fly or walk, seemingly.
No idea how it got here, can't see any nest nearby (would imagine they are quite large..).
Any one know exactly what type of bird it is, or how to look after it?

Looks like a baby white egret. No idea what to feed it. Is there a zoo or some kind of wildlife center nearby you can take it to?

    Good luck.

Since it's a waterbird I imagine that it's diet would consist of shrimp, snails and small fish (minnows).

^Exactly. Egrets live on whatever they stir up with their foot from the muck underwater. Snails, crabs, and the like - they're not discriminating eaters. I'd try some small, mashed up bits of raw shrimp or fish for starters.

Baby birds sometimes have to be force fed if they don't readily eat. I had parakeets once that's mother died and had to be fed with a tube attached to the end of a syringe. The local veterinarian told me what, the amount, and how often to feed them. They all lived to eat on their own.

^ I thought possibly a Pond Heron at first due to the colouring of the feathers but the colour of the feet look different. Pond herons have yellow feet. That bird has feet that look brown. Also Pond Herons have some yellow on their beaks and around their eyes. Maybe the bird in the picture is a Little Heron. I imagine it would eat small fish or pond snails.

kmart, can you post up a higher resolution picture?

^Best I can do, Neverna. Thank for the advice so far. It's a feisty little thing with an alarming stabbing defence peck.. had to put on gloves to handle it.

It's not eating anything yet. One of my accounting staff at work says she can take care of it (she has fostered injured Mynahs before), and I ain't got time really, but thanks everyone for the tips and advice.
Will let you know how it gets on.

Might add an assortment of insect life as well, yet largely marine life and related will suffice..

^In Thailand, so probably best taking it to a restaurant.

Joking aside, our girl at work has got it eating bits of raw fish, fed by chopstick (imitating it's Mother's beak), and drinking a bit of water so far.

She seems to know what she's doing, so I'll let her adopt it. It looks to have a deformed foot as well, so can't imagine it having much chance in the wild, tbh.

Still a bit baffled as to how it managed to turn up literally on our doorstep at home though. Any auspicious lottery ticket numbers I should be buying?
