The Great Blue Hole is one of the natural wonders of the world, lying off the coast of Belize in the midst of the Lighthouse Reef Atoll. It's a circular sinkhole measuring about 1,000 feet (300 meters) wide and more than 400 feet (124 meters) deep. It was apparently formed as part of a cave system tens of thousands of years ago, when sea levels were much lower. When the ocean's waters rose, the caves were flooded. The Great Blue Hole is part of the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System, which UNESCO has designated a World Heritage Site.

With heavy hearts and amid high security, thousands of children in Newtown, Conn., returned to school Tuesday for the first time since a gunman killed 20 students and six staff at Sandy Hook Elementary.
It was a tiny glimmer of normalcy in a town that was also burying two more youngsters, but officials made it clear this will be no ordinary school day.
“This is a day to start healing,” Newtown High School Principal Charles Dumais wrote in an e-mail to parents before six schools opened two hours later than usual, with police officers and counselors on hand.

Gunmen shot five health workers on an anti-polio drive in a string of attacks in Pakistan on Tuesday, officials said, raising fears for the safety of workers immunizing children against the crippling disease.
It was not clear who was behind the shootings, but Taliban insurgents have repeatedly denounced the anti-polio campaign as a Western plot.

Dominique Strauss-Kahn 'pimping' case to proceed

French judges have decided to press ahead with the prosecution of former International Monetary Fund chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn for pimping.
Lawyers for the former French presidential hopeful said they would appeal against the decision.
Mr Strauss-Kahn has admitted attending sex parties in northern France, but says he did not know that some of the women present were paid prostitutes.
Last week he reached a settlement with a hotel maid who said he had raped her.
Mr Strauss-Kahn had been accused of trying to rape Nafissatou Diallo in a hotel in New York in May 2011.
The civil case was settled for an undisclosed sum. A criminal investigation was dropped by US prosecutors last year.
Lostprophets rock star Ian Watkins on child sex offence charges

The lead singer of Welsh rock group Lostprophets has been charged with sexual offences against children.
Ian Watkins, 35, of Pontypridd, will appear before Cardiff magistrates on Wednesday.
He is charged with conspiracy to engage in sexual activity with a female under 13 and possession/distribution of indecent images of children.
Two women, aged 20 and 24, from Doncaster and Bedford, have been charged with similar offences.
All three have been questioned at Cardiff Bay police station, said South Wales Police.
Senior investigating officer Det Insp Peter Doyle said: "Specially-trained staff are available to speak to anyone with concerns or information regarding this investigation and a dedicated telephone number has been set up.
"I want to encourage anyone who has any concerns or information which they think may be relevant to contact us.
"Safeguarding children involved in such cases is always a high priority and as such measures have already been taken."

A 14-foot Christmas tree appears to be crashing through the roof of a one-story house Thursday, Dec. 20 in Seattle's Magnolia neighborhood. Homeowner Patrick Kruger created the illusion of the tree crashing through the roof by cutting a 14-foot tree into two pieces and attaching the top six-foot section to a piece of plywood that's bolted to the roof. According to MyNorthwest.com, Kruger, who is an architect, studied the physics of an object breaking through a roof then added sheathing and typical roof construction materials to create the effect.
