Star trails whirl through the skies over California's Mount Shasta in a time-exposure photo by Brad Goldpaint.
Time-lapse is one of the hottest trends in photography nowadays, thanks in part to the wider availability of high-end cameras, high-resolution video and high production values. But you need some high-class talent behind the lens as well.
It doesn't hurt that the past year has been a gold mine for the glories of the night sky, especially the northern lights. We've featured quite a few time-lapse videos of the aurora, as seen from Earth and from space, and you can click through a few of our favorites below. The latest stunner to surface comes from Pacific Northwest photographer Brad Goldpaint, whose work we featured just a few days ago.
Goldpaint's three-minute time-lapse, titled "Within Two Worlds," features three years' worth of sky imagery collected from a variety of locales — including Tumalo Falls, the Three Sisters Wilderness, Crater Lake and Sparks Lake in Oregon, as well as the High Sierra, Mono Lake and Mount Shasta in California

IMF's Peter Doyle scorns its 'tainted' leadership
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2012/07/2241.jpg
Peter Doyle claims there was a "fundamental illegitimacy" in Christine Lagarde's appointment
A top economist at the International Monetary Fund has poured scorn on its "tainted" leadership and said he is "ashamed" to have worked there.
Peter Doyle said in a letter to the IMF executive board that he wanted to explain his resignation after 20 years.
He writes of "incompetence", "failings" and "disastrous" appointments for the IMF's managing director, stretching back 10 years.
No one from the Washington-based IMF was immediately available for comment.
Mr Doyle, former adviser to the IMF's European Department, which is running the bailout programs for Greece, Portugal and Ireland, said the Fund's delay in warning about the urgency of the global financial crisis was a failure of the "first order".
In the letter, dated 18 June and obtained by the US broadcaster CNN, Mr Doyle said the failings of IMF surveillance of the financial crisis "are, if anything, becoming more deeply entrenched".
He writes: "This fact is most clear in regard to appointments for managing director which, over the past decade, have all-too-evidently been disastrous.
"Even the current incumbent [Christine Lagarde] is tainted, as neither her gender, integrity, or elan can make up for the fundamental illegitimacy of the selection process."
Mr Doyle is thought to be echoing here widespread criticism that the head of the IMF is always a European, while the World Bank chief is always a US appointee.
Mr Doyle concludes his letter: "There are good salty people here. But this one is moving on. You might want to take care not to lose the others."

Sir Alastair Burnet dies at 84
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2012/07/2242.jpg
Veteran newsreader Sir Alastair Burnet, best known for fronting ITV's News At Ten, has died aged 84.
In a statement, his family said he died at a nursing home in London, where he was being cared for after suffering several strokes.

Close friend Andrew Neil called him "one of the greatest journalists of his generation".
"He will also always be recalled by family, friends and colleagues for his unparalleled professionalism, humour and gentlemanly kindness, especially to journalists starting out on their careers," fellow jourrnalist Neil said in tribute.
"Joy it was to be in his company and he was an inspiration to many who followed in his footsteps - the broadcasters' broadcaster."
Sir Alastair also had a distinguished career as a print journalist, editing publications such as The Economist and The Daily Express.

London 2012: Coe defends enforcement of brand rules to 'protect' sponsors
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2012/07/2246.jpg
Lord Coe has defended 2012 Olympics branding rules, which he admitted could see spectators banned from wearing Pepsi T-shirts and other items.
Coca-Cola is a "global partner" of the games, said Lord Coe, and the huge sums it and other sponsors had invested had to be "protected".
But he played down suggestions by the BBC's Evan Davis that the ban might even extend to footwear.
Spectators would "probably" not be asked to remove non-Adidas trainers.
London 2012 hope to raise £2bn from Adidas and other UK sponsors.
Critics have said the enforcement of branding rules at the Beijing Olympics was too heavy-handed and have called for a relaxation in the approach for the London Games, which begin in a week's time.
One MP has called for British firms and other suppliers to be allowed to sell their beer in Olympic venues, arguing it would give a boost to the UK economy.
Under International Olympic Committee (IOC) rules, tier one "worldwide partners" - such as McDonald's and Coca-Cola - get sole global marketing rights within their sector, including being able to sell their products and services exclusively within Olympic venues.
Firms such as Adidas, British Airways and Lloyds TSB are 2012 Olympic partners, granting them exclusive marketing rights within their product sector in the UK.
Other 2012 supporters and suppliers with exclusive contracts include Heineken, Cadbury and Deloitte.
