An Indian vendor takes a nap at the wholesale and retail market in Mumbai, India, Sept. 15. India decided on Sept. 14 to open its retail sector to foreign supermarkets, in what could be a major economic reform that had been blocked last year due to political opposition. The cabinet committee on economic affairs (CCEA), headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, decided to permit up to 51-per-cent foreign direct investment in companies such as department stores that sell items from multiple brands, Commerce Minister Anand Sharma announced in New Delhi. Global chains like Wal-Mart Stores Inc and Tesco Plc have already expressed an interest in entering India's lucrative 500-billion-dollar multi-brand retail sector.

Thousands of protesters demonstrate on the streets of Madrid
Tens of thousands of people have rallied in Spain and Portugal in protest at spending cuts and tax rises in the debt-hit countries.
In Madrid, public sector workers from all over Spain blocked the capital's Plaza de Colon square and nearby roads.
Protests were held in Lisbon and across Portugal, with one person reportedly attempting to set himself on fire.
The Spanish and Portuguese governments say the austerity measures will lead to economic recovery.
'Drastic reduction'
Many of the protesters - including teachers, nurses and firefighters - were ferried to Madrid in buses by trade unions and other workers' rights groups who organised the rally.

"There is no area of my work which has not been affected by the cuts," a 52-year-old doctor from Valencia, who only named himself as Jorge, was quoted as saying by Reuters.
"It's a drastic reduction in the quality of service for patients, it's terrible," he said, adding that his own salary had shrunk by about 30% because of the austerity measures.

The night time raid at Camp Bastion caused damage estimated to run to hundreds of millions of dollars, destroyed six American Harrier jets and badly damaged another two. Details of the assault emerged as six Nato troops, including two British soldiers, were killed in two separate attacks by their Afghan allies in the latest “green on blue” attacks to strike the coalition.
A statement from the insurgents said the attack late on Friday evening on the sprawling Helmand base was in retaliation for an American-made film which insults the prophet Mohammed. Bastion had been chosen because of Prince Harry’s presence, they added.

Afghanistan: Nato air strike 'kills eight women in Laghman'
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2012/09/1321.jpg
At least eight women have died in a Nato air strike in Afghanistan's eastern province of Laghman, local officials say.
Nato has conceded that between five and eight civilians died as it targeted insurgents, and offered condolences.
The remote region in which the strike took place is out of the reach of central government, correspondents say.
Earlier on Sunday, four US soldiers with the Nato forces were killed in an attack by suspected Afghan police.
The attack in southern Zabul province brought to 51 the number of Nato troops killed in "insider attacks" this year, and came a day after two UK soldiers were killed at a checkpoint in Helmand by a man in police uniform.
