Lloyds Bank worker Jessica Harper jailed for £2.4m fraud
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2012/09/1795.jpg Harper is selling her home to pay back the money she stole from Lloyds Bank
A former Lloyds Bank worker in charge of online security has been jailed for five years over a £2.4m fraud.
Jessica Harper, 50, submitted false invoices to claim payments between 2007 and 2011.
At the time, she was working as head of fraud and security for digital banking at the company.
Harper, of South Croydon, south London, admitted fraud by abuse of position and transferring criminal property defrauded from her employers.
She submitted 93 false and doctored invoices to pay herself £2,463,750, giving large sums to friends and her three brothers to invest in property.
Harper had been earning £60,000-a-year at the time, and her role involved fighting fraudsters
Judge Deborah Taylor told her: "You were a senior employee in the bank in a position with a high degree of trust at a time when Lloyds was substantially supported by a lot of taxpayers' money following difficulties sustained by the bank in the financial crisis.
"You disregarded your duties out of a sense of entitlement to take other people's money for your own benefit and that of your family."
Judge Taylor said she thought Harper had personally benefited from the swindle, something Harper denies.
Harper had told investigating officers she deserved the money because she was rising at 5.30am and returning home at 8pm.

Police Federation calls for Andrew Mitchell to quit over outburst
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2012/09/1796.jpg Mr Mitchell denies using specific words reported by the Sun
Conservative minister Andrew Mitchell has been urged to resign by Police Federation leaders over his outburst to an officer in Downing Street.
The body representing rank-and-file officers said Mr Mitchell's reported remarks were "outrageous".
The Tory Chief Whip has denied reports he swore at officers and called them "plebs" but has apologised for showing a lack of respect.
David Cameron said the minister's conduct was "not appropriate".
"He has obviously apologised to me, but more importantly he has apologised thoroughly to the police and that needed to be done," said the prime minister.
Mr Cameron also praised the police, saying they do an "outstanding job".
'Lack of respect'
The incident occurred after Mr Mitchell, MP for Sutton Coldfield, was told by officers to get off his bicycle as he left Downing Street and use the smaller pedestrian gate.
He is reported by the Sun to have used foul language and told the officer at the gates to "learn your place" and "you don't run this government".
The officer concerned reported the incident to his superiors.
Downing Street denied reports the officer at the centre of the row had been told to come into Number 10 on his day off to meet Mr Mitchell for an apology, saying the minister had spoken to him on the telephone and "apologised profusely".
But his apology has not been accepted by police union leaders - and the comments have also sparked criticism from some of Mr Mitchell's Conservative colleagues.
Police Federation national chairman, Paul McKeever, said: "It is hard to fathom how someone who holds the police in such contempt could be allowed to hold a public office.
"Mr Mitchell's half-hearted apology for the comments made whilst leaving Downing Street will do little to build bridges with the police who feel they have once again been treated with a lack of respect and civility by members of this government.
"The lack of regard that some within government appear to hold police officers in is especially disappointing during this tragic week for the service and does nothing for the rock bottom morale of officers in this country."
John Tully, the Metropolitan Police Federation chairman, told BBC News: "If that was one of my members speaking to a member of the government they'd be on the carpet now and would be gone within days."

Shaanxi bus crash: China sacks 'smiling official'
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2012/08/2421.jpg A bus collided with a methane-laden tanker on 26 August
A safety official in China who sparked a public outcry after images showed him grinning at the scene of a fatal bus crash has been sacked, officials say.
Yang Dacai has been stripped of all his official duties for "serious wrongdoing", Shaanxi province officials said in a statement.
Pictures of Mr Yang smiling while visiting the site where 36 people died on 26 August were posted online.
Outrage grew when netizens found images of him wearing luxury watches.
An investigation into Mr Yang's "inappropriate behaviour of 'grinning' as well as wearing luxurious watches" found him guilty of "serious wrongdoing", the Communist Party's discipline commission in Shaanxi said.
Officials are still further investigating "trails of [Mr Yang's] other wrongdoing", according to the online statement.
Mr Yang, head of Shaanxi's Provincial Bureau of Work Safety, fielded questions on his Twitter-like weibo microblog after netizens posted images of him wearing expensive watches on various occasions.
Responding to criticism that he grinned at the scene of the crash he said: "My heart was heavy when I reached the scene... Junior officials appeared nervous when they were updating me on the situation.
"I was trying to get them to relax a little, so maybe, in an unguarded moment, I got a little too relaxed myself."
He also explained that he "used legal income" to buy a number of watches, saying that the most expensive one he owned was worth 35,000 yuan ($5,550, £3,420).
