Prostate drug abiraterone 'set for NHS use'
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2012/05/1677.jpg
A drug for advanced prostate cancer is likely to be approved for NHS use in England and Wales after the medical watchdog reversed an earlier decision.
Abiraterone, which costs about £3,000 a month and can extend life by more than three months, was initially rejected by NICE for not being cost effective.
The decision prompted an angry response from patients and cancer charities.
Final approval will be made in June after the manufacturer offered the oral tablet at an undisclosed lower price.

Salvagers then managed to fully sink the vessel and rolled the Spiegel Grove on her side. In July 2005, Mother Nature took its turn and Hurricane Dennis helped push the Spiegel Grove upright, making for a perfect wreck dive and a major Keys dive attraction.

Sam Hallam murder conviction quashed by Court of Appeal
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2012/05/1728.jpg
A 24-year-old man who served more than seven years in jail for a murder he always denied has had his conviction quashed.
Sam Hallam was jailed for life in 2005, with a minimum term of 12 years, over the death of Essayas Kassahun, 21, in Clerkenwell, central London, in 2004.
Mr Hallam was at the Court of Appeal to hear the announcement that his conviction was "unsafe".
He said: "I don't want anyone else ever to suffer what I've been through."
In a statement read outside court by Paul May, who led the campaign to free him, Mr Hallam added: "The identification evidence against me was so unreliable it should have never been put to the jury.
"The Metropolitan Police should have followed up leads which would have proved my innocence of the terrible murder of Essayas Kassahun.
"They should have disclosed all the relevant evidence in their possession to my lawyers and they didn't.
"I now need time to recover with my family and friends from the nightmare I've suffered for the last seven-and-a-half years.

German immigration jumps to highest levels in 16 years
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2012/05/1732.jpg
Immigration has leaped to its highest level in 16 years in Germany, according to government figures.
The number of people moving to Germany from Greece and Spain have seen particular jumps, with arrivals from Greece almost doubling.
Data from Germany's statistics office showed that 958,000 people moved to Germany in 2011, while 679,000 left, the highest net inflow since 1996.
Most of the migrant arrivals were from new eastern European EU member states.
The rise came after Germany's seven-year exemption to EU rules on the free movement of labour expired, allowing people from Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary to enter the country.
Some 163,000 Poles moved to Germany in 2011, 49,000 more than in 2010, while a total of 41,000 Hungarians moved last year, 12,000 more than a year earlier.

Florida murder suspect George Zimmerman had a pair of black eyes, a fractured nose and cuts to his head when examined following the death of teenager Trayvon Martin, US reports say.
Mr Zimmerman was examined the day after February's fatal shooting, reports said, giving details of the findings.
He has always maintained he acted in self-defence on the night he shot and killed Trayvon Martin.
He denies a charge of second-degree murder, and is currently free on bail.
According to documents obtained ABC News that are expected to be used by his defence in the event of a trial, Mr Zimmerman reported to a family doctor for a medical examination the morning after the shooting.
He was described as having a "closed fracture" of his nose and two lacerations on the back of his head, as well as the black eyes.
Previous evidence of an altercation between Trayvon Martin and Mr Zimmerman was limited to police CCTV footage from when the neighbourhood watch volunteer was brought to a police station after the shooting.

MotoGP champion Casey Stoner to retire at end of season
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2012/05/1745.jpg
MotoGP world champion Casey Stoner will retire at the end of the season after explaining that he has lost his passion for the sport.
The 26-year-old Australian had previously denied rumours that he was to end his career, but revealed his intention ahead of France Grand Prix.
"This sport has changed a lot and it has changed to the point where I am not enjoying it," he said.
"I don't have the passion for it and so at this time it's better if I retire."
He added: "There are a lot of things that have disappointed me, and also a lot of things I have loved about this sport, but unfortunately the balance has gone in the wrong direction.
"After a long time thinking, a lot of time talking with my family and my wife, this has been coming for a couple of years now, but at the end of this 2012 season I will be not racing in the 2013 Championship."
Stoner, who also won the world title in 2007, leads this year's championship by a single point from Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo after claiming victories in Spain and Portugal.

Disco singer Donna Summer dies
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2012/05/1742.jpg
US singer Donna Summer, famous for disco hits including I Feel Love, Love To Love You Baby and Love's Unkind, has died at the age of 63.
Summer was one of disco's biggest stars and won five Grammy Awards.
Her family said they were "at peace celebrating her extraordinary life and her continued legacy".
Summer's collaborations with producer Giorgio Moroder helped define the genre, as well as having a huge influence on synth pop and dance music.
Stars including Madonna, Kylie Minogue and David Bowie were among the acts who acknowledged her influence.
A statement from Summer's family said: "Early this morning, we lost Donna Summer Sudano, a woman of many gifts, the greatest being her faith.
"While we grieve her passing, we are at peace celebrating her extraordinary life and her continued legacy. Words truly can't express how much we appreciate your prayers and love for our family at this sensitive time."
Born LaDonna Andre Gaines, Summer grew up in Boston and started singing in her church's gospel choir.
She began her professional career on the stage and joined the cast of a German production of the musical Hair in the late 1960s, prompting her to move to the country.
Her first solo record came out in 1971 but it was her work with the Italian synthesiser pioneer Moroder that led to her breakthrough with Love to Love You Baby in 1975 - the first of 29 UK top 40 singles.
