For the first time in US history, racial and ethnic minorities outnumber its white majority – white births make up fewer than half the children born in the country, according to the US Census Bureau. The new 2011 census, which was made public on Thursday, reveals non-Hispanic whites accounted for 49.6 per cent of all births in the 12-month period that ended last July. The minorities – Hispanics, blacks, Asians and those of mixed race – made 50.4 per cent in total, with Hispanics at 26 per cent, blacks 15 per cent, and about 4 per cent Asian. That compares with a 37 per cent ratio in 1990.

Ched Evans rape case: Police at Sky over victim naming
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2012/05/1820.jpg Wales and Sheffield United striker Ched Evans was jailed for five years
Sky News staff have met with police after the channel published the name of the teenager raped by Wales footballer Ched Evans.
Officers from North Wales Police formally interviewed staff in London as part of their continuing investigation.
The case will be referred to the Crown Prosecution Service and the Attorney General's office.
Sky said a technical error meant the victim's name was broadcast "for a fraction of a second".
The broadcaster added that it was "visible only when viewed in slow motion."
It said staff had met with police on Thursday to "explain and demonstrate" the technical error.
"We apologised to the victim and her family as soon as we became aware of the error and are co-operating fully with the police," Sky added in a statement.
Det Ch Insp Steve Williams confirmed Sky News had fully co-operated with the investigation.

Barry George in compensation case
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2012/05/1821.jpg Mr George was first convicted in 2001 but an Old Bailey retrial took place in 2008
Barry George, who was wrongly convicted of the murder of BBC TV presenter Jill Dando, can fight a test case for compensation, a judge has ruled.
Mr George, who spent eight years in prison before being cleared after a retrial, will be one of five lead cases to be heard at the High Court.
They will help establish the boundaries of what amounts to a miscarriage of justice meriting compensation.
It follows a ruling at the Supreme Court last year.
Nine judges had considered appeals by three men, not including Mr George, who said they had wrongly been refused compensation after their murder convictions were overturned.
Their judgement in those cases redefined the legal meaning of what amounted to a miscarriage of justice after debating when compensation should be awarded to wrongly convicted people.
Mr George's claim for damages for lost earnings and wrongful imprisonment was rejected by the Ministry of Justice, on the basis he was not legally entitled to compensation.
In the most recent hearing, London's High Court Mr Justice Irwin said the five test cases would "illustrate the boundaries of the law" as it currently stands, to help settle future compensation cases.
He said he aimed to hear the lead cases in the second week of October.

Kings and queens from around the world have been lunching at Windsor Castle to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.
Twelve members of the British royal family joined the Queen to welcome the sovereigns of 26 countries.
Among the guests is King Hamad al-Khalifa of Bahrain, whose attendance has been criticised by human rights campaigners.
Buckingham Palace has said that the Foreign Office approved the invitation of King Hamad.
Another invitation proving to be controversial is that of King Mswati III of Swaziland, who is accused of living a lavish lifestyle while his people go hungry.
Campaigner Peter Tatchell criticised the Queen for inviting "royal tyrants to celebrate her Diamond Jubilee".
The Foreign Office said it was having "a full and frank discussion on a range of issues" with Bahrain's government. :)

Jacob Zuma painting: ANC to sue South Africa's Brett Murray
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2012/05/1824.jpg
South Africa's governing ANC says it will go to court after a gallery exhibited a painting with President Jacob Zuma's genitals hanging out.
Brett Murray's painting by is an "abuse of freedom of artistic expression" said ANC spokesman Jackson Mthembu.
He said he had asked lawyers to get the Johannesburg gallery to remove the $14,000 (£9,000) painting, The Spear.
President Zuma, who has four wives, has sued local media companies 11 times for defamation.
The BBC's Mohammed Ali in Cape Town says some have been settled, other dropped, while most are outstanding.
The best-known case is a 2008 suit against one of the country's most high-profile artists, Zapiro, after he depicted Mr Zuma about to rape a female figure representing justice - this is due to be heard in October.
Mr Zuma was cleared of raping a family friend in 2006

China jails smuggler Lai Changxing for life
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2012/05/1825.jpg
Lai Changxing has been jailed for life for running a multi-billion dollar smuggling ring, Chinese media say.
Xinhua news agency said Lai, extradited from Canada, was convicted and sentenced by a Fujian court.
The 53-year-old was accused of bribing officials and smuggling goods including cars, cigarettes and oil in one of China's biggest political scandals.
He fled to Canada in 1999 and avoided extradition for 12 years by arguing he faced torture and execution in China.
Beijing promised Canada he would not be executed and he was deported in 2011.
Canada usually forbids the extradition of suspects to countries where they might face the death penalty, and the case severely tested diplomatic relations between the two.

German baritone singer Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau dies
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2012/05/1826.jpg Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau singing at the premiere of War Requiem in 1962
The respected German baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau has died, aged 86.
Once described as "the most influential singer of the 20th Century", he was famed for his performances of Winter's Journey (Winterreise) by Schubert.
Born in Berlin in May 1925, he emerged as a performer after World War II and was swiftly recognised as one of his generation's finest lyrical vocalists.
Benjamin Britten personally asked him to perform in the first performance of his War Requiem in May 1962.
Fischer-Dieskau was most famous for his interpretations of lieder - German art songs written for solo voice and piano.
He performed them around the world, rescued many from obscurity, and made scores of recordings that became the benchmark against which other singers' interpretations were judged.
Klaus Staeck, president of the German Academy of Arts, said his contribution to the German art song was "phenomenal", adding that "his performances of some of the great role in opera history shaped the culture of singing".
Though critics raved about his beautiful voice and musical artistry, Fischer-Dieskau said his aim was simply to get close to the essence of the song.
