Woman jailed for life for William Reilly bottle murder
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2011/08/3036.jpg
A woman has been jailed for life for murdering a 91-year-old blind man by battering him with a bottle of wine.
Melanie Cole, 49, attacked William Reilly at his home in Tower Gardens, Tottenham, north London, on 29 December. He died a week later.
The Old Bailey heard Cole, who must serve at least 30 years in prison, "murdered him for money".
Cole, of Culford Road, Islington, was cleared of murdering another man in 2005.
Jurors heard Mr Reilly was found covered in blood sitting on his bed, by his son James.
He had suffered head injuries after being beaten with a bottle of Chateauneuf-du-Pape and a bottle of liqueur.
The retired builder, who was registered blind and almost completely deaf, died a week later in hospital after developing pneumonia.
Zoe Johnson, prosecuting, said Cole killed Mr Reilly for the money he had in his coat pocket.
The court heard Cole would turn up at the house unannounced and had previously stolen money from Mr Reilly after they met in a local pub.
Cole denied the charge and claimed Mr Reilly was well when she left him

Man guilty of Heathrow suitcase murder of Fatima Kama

Youseff Wahid took the suitcase with the body in it on a train to Heathrow
A man who stabbed a woman to death and then travelled on a train with the body in a suitcase has been convicted of murder.
Youseff Wahid, 42, was spotted on CCTV heaving the case on to the Heathrow Express before dumping it in a car park, the Old Bailey heard.
He had attacked "vivacious" Fatima Kama, 28, when she stayed at his brother's flat in London in 1999.
Wahid fled to Beirut but was finally tracked down in Bahrain.
Miss Kama was on a week-long visit to London from Canada in July 1999 when she was attacked in the property on Edgware Road.
She had been repeatedly stabbed and had her throat slashed.
Wahid then took her body on the train from Paddington station to an airport car park.
Adrian Darbishire, prosecuting, said Wahid was seen on CCTV carrying the "very heavy" suitcase on the train.

Fatima Kama had a number of rich admirers
The next morning, he had shaved off his moustache and left the UK for Beirut in his native Lebanon where extradition was not possible.
But Mr Darbishire said he could not escape "the long arm of Scotland Yard" as detectives tracked him to Bahrain.
It is believed that is the first time anyone has been extradited to the UK from there.
DNA from the body linked him to Miss Kama whose blood was found on carpets and skirting boards.
Miss Kama's family had alerted police when she failed to turn up at Montreal airport.

Elvis Presley songwriter Jerry Leiber dies at 78
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2011/08/3069.jpg
Leiber (right) and Stoller (left) were responsible for some of Elvis Presley's classic hits
Jerry Leiber, the songwriter who penned such classic rock and roll hits as Elvis Presley's Hound Dog and Jailhouse Rock, has died at the age of 78.
Leiber earned his reputation alongside co-writer Mike Stoller, penning tunes for The Drifters, The Coasters and Ben E King as well as Presley.
Leiber and Stoller infused their songs with influences from their blues and jazz backgrounds.
Leiber died of cardiopulmonary failure in Los Angeles, a spokesman said.
Leiber's career began in 1953 when Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton became the first artist to record Hound Dog.
Then a rhythm and blues number, the track went to the top of the charts.
The song would later become an even more successful hit record for Presley, who reinvented it as a rock and roll standard.
The pair also crafted the enduring Ben E King hit Stand By Me, seen by critics as one of their most influential and enduring songs.
Leiber and Stoller's work as a songwriting duo earned them 15 number one hits and secured them both entry into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, in 1987.

Australian MP Craig Thomson in sex scandal inquiry
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2011/08/3097.jpg
Australian police are investigating claims an MP from the governing Labor Party misused his trade union credit card to pay for sex with prostitutes.
Police said they were examining new evidence against Craig Thomson.
Mr Thomson has denied any wrongdoing, and has already said an unnamed friend forged his signature to use the card.
A conviction for theft or fraud could bring down Julia Gillard's minority government, which has a working majority of just one seat.
Prime Minister Gillard has expressed "full confidence" in Mr Thomson, and said any investigation into his conduct should be allowed to run its course.
