Twenty people escape fire at Branson's holiday home
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2011/08/2964.jpg
Twenty people have escaped unhurt from a fire that broke out at Sir Richard Branson's luxury home in the Caribbean.
British actress Kate Winslet was among those staying on Necker Island in the British Virgin Islands when a tropical storm broke out and lightning hit the house, said Sir Richard.
The Virgin Group boss, who was staying at a nearby property, said the fire had "completely destroyed" the building.
He said all 20 people in the house managed to escape without injury.
Sir Richard's 90-year-old mother Eve and his 29-year-old daughter Holly were also staying at the property, named the Great House, when the blaze broke out in the early hours of Monday.
"We had a really bad tropical storm with winds up to 90mph," said Sir Richard, who was staying at a nearby property with his wife Joan and son Sam, 25, at the time.

Dunblane survivor Ryan Liddell faces life for rape bid
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2011/08/2965.jpg
A survivor of the Dunblane massacre has been warned he could face a life sentence for carrying out a sex attack on a 76-year-old woman in her home.
Ryan Liddell, 20, was found guilty of assault with intent to rape following a trial in June.
He was five when he was badly wounded in the 1996 massacre at Dunblane Primary School.
A judge told Liddell that a full risk assessment order would be carried out before he passes sentence.
This assessment can lead to the making of an Order for Lifelong Restriction.
Under such a life sentence - reserved for the most serious sex and violence cases short of murder - a judge fixes a minimum term the offender must serve before he can be released.

Prosecutors are to meet the hotel maid accusing former IMF director Dominique Strauss-Kahn of sexual assault, amid reports the case is about to collapse.
Nafissatou Diallo's lawyer has said they expect to learn the case will be dropped when they meet New York prosecutors at 15:00 (20:00 BST).
Mr Strauss-Kahn was arrested in May accused of sexually assaulting the African immigrant.
He also faces a civil lawsuit filed by Ms Diallo this month.
Mr Strauss-Kahn is expected to appear in a Manhattan court on Tuesday, when prosecutors will outline how the case is to proceed.
If the charges are thrown out, he would be free to return to France.

Canadian opposition leader Jack Layton has died after a second bout of cancer, aged 61.
Layton passed away at his home in Toronto early on Monday surrounded by his wife and children, his family said in a statement.
His left-leaning New Democratic Party (NDP) surged to become the official opposition for the first time in May's federal elections.
He stepped down only last month as party leader to fight his illness.
"We deeply regret to inform you that the Honourable Jack Layton, leader of the New Democratic Party of Canada, passed away at 04:45 local time [08:45 GMT] today," his family said in a statement.
"He passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family and loved ones."
Prime Minister Stephen Harper saluted "Jack's contribution to public life, a contribution that will be sorely missed".
Layton announced he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer in February 2010.

North Korea seizes South's Mount Kumgang resort assets
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2011/08/2974.jpg
North Korea says it is seizing assets at a tourist site jointly operated with South Korea.
It has given South Koreans 72 hours to leave the resort at Mount Kumgang, which lies just inside North Korea.
The resort used to be a symbol of co-operation between the two Koreas and a key source of hard currency for Pyongyang.
But joint operations were suspended in 2008 after a South Korean tourist was shot dead by a North Korean soldier.
Since then, ties between the two Koreas have deteriorated.
Tensions remain high over the sinking of a South Korean warship in March 2010 and the shelling by North Korea of a South Korean border island in November.

Thailand's economic growth slows on supply chain woes
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2011/08/2975.jpg
Thailand's economy shrank because of the tsunami and earthquake in Japan
Thailand's economic growth slowed in the second quarter due to supply chain disruptions caused by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.
Growth was 2.6% in the three months to the end of June, from a year earlier, down from 3.2% in the first quarter.
Compared with the previous three months, the economy shrank by 0.2%.
The destruction in Japan resulted in a shortfall in parts for manufacturers in Thailand, especially for auto makers, which hurt exports.
"The net exports position remained a drag as expected, with the post-quake impact on the manufacturing sector weighing on the economy's performance." said Radhika Rao of Forecast Pte.

Deutsche Bank charged in South Korea over stock rout
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2011/08/2976.jpg
Deutsche Bank's South Korean brokerage and four of its employees have been charged with illegally manipulating Seoul's stock market last year.
Korean prosecutors allege the firm earned more than 45bn won ($41.5m; £25m) in unfair trading on 11 November.
In a statement, Deutsche Bank denied the charges and said it would defend itself in court.
Seoul's benchmark share index fell by 48 points, or 2.7%, in the last 10 minutes of trading on 11 November.
Korea's Financial Services Commission confirmed that about 2.4tn won in sell orders from foreign investors were processed on that day, most of them through Deutsche Bank's local securities unit.
In February this year, financial authorities banned Deutsche Bank's Korean unit from trading shares and derivatives for its own account for six months starting from April.
Deutsche was also fined 1bn won over the alleged manipulation, the largest fine handed down by Korea's stock exchange.

Paris souvenir-sellers in clashes beneath Eiffel Tower
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2011/08/2977.jpg
Clashes have broken out between Paris police and illegal street vendors selling souvenirs of the Eiffel Tower.
Police moved in to evict the salesmen from beneath the monument on Sunday.
Three police were hurt when scuffles erupted and vendors started throwing stones and bottles. About 10 people were arrested.
A senior police official, Jean-Louis Fiamenghi, said: "All street vendors will now be systematically arrested and we will not tolerate these sales."
The vendors had apparently been angered when one of their number was electrocuted on Friday after fleeing across a railway line to escape a police check.
Police said that the man was improving in hospital and was no longer in danger.
