Libya conflict: Heavy gunfire erupts in Tripoli
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2011/08/2826.jpg
Nato is continuing to carry out air strikes on Tripoli
Explosions and sustained gunfire have been heard in parts of Tripoli, as rebels close in on the Libyan capital.
A BBC correspondent in the city says it sounded like exchange of fire rather than celebratory gunshots.
Residents spoke of clashes, as a rebel official said the uprising against Col Muammar Gaddafi had begun in Tripoli. The government said it was in control.
Rebels earlier captured the key cities of Zlitan, 160km (100 miles) east of Tripoli, and Zawiya, 30km to the west.
However, pro-Gaddafi forces have been fighting back at the oil port of Brega, with the rebels admitting that they fell back from the eastern town's industrial zone under heavy bombardment.

Red Arrows pilot dies in Bournemouth Air Festival crash
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2011/08/2827.jpg
An RAF Red Arrows pilot died when his plane crashed following a display at the Bournemouth Air Festival in Dorset.
Flt Lt Jon Egging, 33, from Rutland, was killed when his Hawk T1 aircraft - Red 4 - crashed about 1km south east of Bournemouth Airport at 13:50 BST.
Eyewitnesses described seeing the plane plunge to the ground in a field near the River Stour at Throop village.
It was one of nine Red Arrows aircraft that had earlier taken part in a display over the seafront.
In a statement Flt Lt Egging's wife, Dr Emma Egging, described her husband as "an exemplary pilot" and said watching him during the display was the "proudest" she had ever been.
"Jon was everything to those that knew him, and he was the best friend and husband I could ever have wished for," she said.
"I know that he would have wanted me to say something from the heart at this time. There was nothing bad about Jon.
"He loved his job and was an exemplary pilot.
"I loved everything about him, and he will be missed."

Tony Blair warns against 'muddle-headed' riots analysis
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2011/08/2828.jpg
"Muddle-headed analysis" of the recent riots may result in the wrong policy responses, Tony Blair has warned.
In a rare foray into domestic politics, the former prime minister also dismissed claims the country was in the grip of a "moral decline".
Writing in the Observer, he said the riots were "an absolutely specific problem that requires a deeply specific solution" by politicians.
The "big" cause was "alienated, disaffected youth," he said.
Attacking another middle east country would seem to be the ideal solution then. Conscription and death. Gotta be on a winner there Tony :)
Meanwhile, in the Sunday Express, Prime Minister David Cameron pledged a fightback against "the wrong-headed ideas, bureaucratic nonsense and destructive culture" which had led to the current problems (brought about by Labour Party policies over the past decade or so no doubt :))

Powerful earthquake jolts South Pacific near Vanuatu
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2011/08/2829.jpg
A powerful earthquake has been reported off the South Pacific island of Vanuatu at a depth of 41 km (25 miles) with no immediate reports of its impact.
The magnitude 7.1 quake occurred at 03:55 local time, 63km (39 miles) south of the capital, Port-Vila, the US Geological Survey said.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center ruled out a Pacific-wide tsunami.
Vanuatu, a chain of 80 islands with a population of a quarter of a million, is prone to quakes and tsunamis.
Several powerful aftershocks later struck the same area, at least one with a magnitude of 7.0. The US Geological Survey earlier said the first quake was of a 7.5 magnitude.
It is not clear what damage has been caused.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center warned of the possibility of more localised tsunamis.

Former Brazil captain Socrates in intensive care
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2011/08/2830.jpg
Socrates, the captain of the Brazil team at the 1982 World Cup Finals, is in intensive care in a Sao Paulo hospital.
The 57-year-old was admitted to the Albert Einstein Hospital on Friday with gastrointestinal bleeding.
According to the hospital, the haemorrhage was caused by high blood pressure in the vein that carries blood from the digestive system to the liver.
Socrates won 60 caps in Brazil's midfield, scoring 22 goals.
He led the flamboyant but ultimately unsuccessful Brazil team at the 1982 World Cup in Spain.
Brazil cruised through the first group stage scoring 10 goals, and then beat Argentina 3-1 - but they were eliminated after losing 3-2 to Italy in their second game of the second group stage, a game Socrates scored in.
He also played in the 1986 World Cup in Mexico - not as captain - but missed a penalty in a shoot-out as Brazil lost to France in the quarter-finals.
Socrates Brasileiro Sampaio de Souza Vieira de Oliveira, to give him his full name, delayed the start of his international career until the age of 25 so he could complete his studies as a doctor.
In his retirement, he has added a doctorate in philosophy and fathered six children, and he continues to practice medicine in the town of Ribeirao Preto in addition to being a commentator on both football and cultural issues.
He is also well-known for his smoking habit.

Colombian negotiator Piedad Cordoba flees death threats
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2011/08/2833.jpg
Colombian peace campaigner and former Senator Piedad Cordoba has left the country after receiving death threats.
She has negotiated the release of a number of hostages held by the Farc guerrilla group, but the government accused her of helping the rebels.
She was banned from public office for 18 years.
Ms Cordoba's lawyer said the death threats had intensified following her latest attempts to get the rebels to the negotiating table.
Lawyer Luis Guillermo Perez said the intimidation had been "constant, and she was told an attack was being planned to kill her".
Mr Perez said the number of threats against Ms Cordoba had mounted over the past couple of weeks at the same time as she received increased media attention due to a letter her organisation sent to the Farc and ELN rebels.
In it, Colombians for Peace urged the two left-wing guerrilla groups to release the hostages they still hold to pave the way for negotiations.

Mexico football match abandoned after gunfire
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2011/08/2842.jpg
A first division football match in Mexico was abandoned because of a gun battle just outside the stadium.
Players from Santos Laguna and Monarcas Morelia ran to the dressing rooms and fans dived for cover as shots rang out in the northern city of Torreon.
The players were in the 40th minute of their scoreless match on Saturday when pandemonium broke out.
Gunmen had opened fire on members of the security forces at a checkpoint, injuring one policeman.
About 20,000 fans were watching the game at the TSM, home of Santos, but no-one was hurt inside the stadium.
The authorities said the shooting began after three vehicles with armed men failed to stop.
Santos chairman Alejandro Irarragorri, accompanied by his goalkeeper, went on to the pitch to make an announcement.
He told the crowd: "In the Santos club, we feel bad for the time in which we are living. It is evident that the game will be suspended.
"You can be assured that we will try to control these situations. We are sorry for Morelia, the referees and those who are visiting us from elsewhere."
Drug-related violence in northern Mexico has claimed thousands of lives in the past few years but it is not clear if this shooting was linked to organised crime.
More than 35,000 Mexicans have been killed in drug-related violence since President Felipe Calderon began deploying troops to fight the drugs cartels in December 2006.
It is thought this is the first time a football match in Mexico's top-flight division had to be abandoned due to violence since Mr Calderon became president.
Last year, a baseball game was suspended in the north-eastern border city of Reynosa because of a similar incident.
