A senior state official has been shot dead in central Mexico.

Jose de Jesus Gallegos was named as tourism minister in Jalisco's state government only 10 days ago. The Jalisco authorities said the attack had nothing to do with Mr Gallegos' current job.

Unconfirmed reports say four people have been detained.

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto has joined state governor Aristoteles Sandoval in condemning the attack.

Police said Mr Gallegos was attacked by gunmen as he drove through Zapopan, which is part of Guadalajara's metropolitan area.

Initial reports said two vehicles had blocked Mr Gallegos as he was driving on the border area between Zapopan and the state capital, Guadalajara.

Several gunmen opened fire when his car stopped.

"It was probably related to his business activities before he took the job as secretary of tourism," said Jalisco's government secretary, Arturo Zamora.

Federal authorities had been instructed to help local police solve the crime, which Mr Zamora said must not go unpunished.

The population of the Falkland Islands is going to the polls on Sunday and Monday in a referendum on whether to remain a British Overseas Territory.

Argentina has constantly reiterated its claims to the islands, 30 years after it was repelled by a British Task Force in a 74-day conflict.

The islanders decided to hold the vote in response to Argentine pressure for negotiations over sovereignty.

The tiny community is expected to overwhelmingly back remaining British.

But a "yes" vote backing the status quo is unlikely to resolve the dispute.

Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner has said the inhabitants' wishes are not relevant in what is a territorial issue.

Princess Lilian of Sweden, whose romance with husband Prince Bertil became one of Sweden's best-known love stories, has died at the age of 97.

Welsh-born Lilian met Prince Bertil in London during World War II.

However, they faced objections to their relationship because of the prince's obligations to the throne and Lilian's status as a divorced commoner. They had to wait until 1976 to get married.

In 2010, it was announced she had been suffering from Alzheimer's disease.

Princess Lilian was born Lilian Davies in Swansea in August 1915 and moved to London aged 16 to follow a modelling career. She was married to actor Ivan Craig when she met Prince Bertil in London in 1943.

The couple fell in love in what Swedish media described as a real-life Cinderella story. She divorced her British husband two years later.

However, Prince Bertil's father, King Gustaf VI Adolf, refused to give his blessing for the couple to get married.

The prince's elder brother died in a plane crash in 1947 and another brother had also married a commoner, giving up his right to the throne. Bertil was next in line to the throne until his nephew came of age. Carl Gustaf eventually became king in 1973.

The king feared that had Prince Bertil married a commoner, the royal dynasty's survival would be jeopardised.

It took more than 30 years before they could marry, when they both had reached their sixties.

The couple were popular with the Swedish public.

Prince Bertil died in 1997 and Lilian later wrote about the difficulties of their life together.

They did not have any children, which Princess Lilian's late husband described as "rather sad".

Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt said that a "much loved and appreciated member of the royal family has now passed away".

Oxfordshire canine Jilly crowned Crufts champion

Jilly won the Best in Breed and Best in Group to qualify for Best in Show

A Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen nicknamed Jilly has been crowned Best in Show at Crufts.

The four-year old, full name Soletrader Peek A Boo, beat more than 20,000 dogs to take the coveted title.

The canine - owned by Sara and Gavin Robertson from Wallingford, Oxfordshire - vied for the title along with seven dogs after winning Best of Breed and then Best in Group in previous rounds.

The four-day competition was held at the NEC in Birmingham.

Judges from the Kennel Club mark the dogs according to the criteria of their individual breed standards.

They also assess the dogs' overall health and condition, coat, character, temperament and movement.

The reserve Best in Show title went to a three-year-old Labrador Retriever called Romeo from Cesara in Italy.

A suspect in the notorious rape and murder of a female student in India's capital, Delhi, has been found dead in prison, his lawyer has confirmed.

Police say Ram Singh hanged himself in Delhi's Tihar jail, but defence lawyers and his family suspect he was murdered.

Ram Singh, 33, was one of five men being held in the rape and murder case. They all deny the charges.

The attack on the student on a bus in December outraged India and triggered a debate about the treatment of women.

'Mother and children' die in German house blaze

A fire has swept through an apartment building in the town of Backnang in southern Germany, killing eight people, police say.

Initial reports point to the dead being a mother and her seven children. Four people were rescued from a balcony.

The building, a converted former leather factory, has a German-Turkish cultural exchange association on the ground floor.

But police said there was no indication of arson or a "xenophobic" attack.

The fire broke out in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Investigators trying to determine the cause of the blaze are focusing on an oven or heater on the first or second floors.

Lancaster Islamic girls' school sex assault: Men arrested

Three men arrested following an alleged sexual assault and false imprisonment at an Islamic girls' school have links with the school, police said.

Officers are investigating a single alleged incident last Tuesday involving a small number of girls at Jamea Al Kauthar in Lancaster.

A Bolton man, 40, and a Blackburn man, 30, have been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and false imprisonment.

A Blackburn man aged 53 was arrested on suspicion of false imprisonment.

Searches are being conducted at the school by female officers.

The alleged incident was reported to police on Saturday and a search warrant was executed on Sunday.

Police will not confirm the details of the men's connections with the establishment, but said they were arrested at the school.

Peter Shilton won 125 caps in 20 years for England

England's most capped footballer Peter Shilton has been charged with drinking and driving.

The 63-year-old, of Kenilworth in Warwickshire, was arrested in Manor Road in Colchester on 24 February.

Mr Shilton, whose partner is understood to live in Colchester, was charged with driving with excess alcohol.

The legendary keeper, who started his career at Leicester City, is expected to appear before Colchester magistrates on 19 March.

Mr Shilton was sold to Stoke by Leicester for a then world-record fee for a goalkeeper, and went on to play for a number of teams during his 30-year career.

An internationally-acclaimed artist has been described in court as a paedophile who blindfolded girls and committed indecent acts.

Graham Ovenden, 70 - who has had work hung at the Tate Gallery - is accused of sexually abusing children in London and Cornwall.

Truro Crown Court heard Mr Ovenden's "target of abuse was young girls."

He denies nine charges of indecency with a child and indecent assault on victims aged between six and 14.

When he was arrested over the alleged abuse of one of the girls, Mr Ovenden admitted he had taken photographs of her - a few of them being "nudies", the court was told.

NASA says it could be another 20 years before humans touch down on Mars, but in a sense, the Mars Society has been exploring the red planet for more than a decade — in Utah.

The nonprofit society's Mars Desert Research Station, near Hanksville, Utah, has been home to 126 crews since the Mars-style habitat was erected in 2002. The idea behind the experimental station is to test the tools and techniques that could come into play during eventual human expeditions to the real Red Planet.

Each expedition crew consists of roughly a half-dozen volunteers who spend about two weeks in the Utah desert, conducting real research on a make-believe Mars.
Utah's desert is one of several locales around the world that are thought to be sufficiently Mars-like to teach researchers about the far more extreme conditions on the cold, dry planet. Other locales for Mars simulations include the Canadian Arctic, Antarctica, Norway's Svalbard Peninsula, caves on the Italian island of Sardinia, and even a lab in Russia.

The crew members for such simulations range from NASA researchers to students who hope to walk on Martian soil someday. Another would-be Marsonaut is Reuters photographer Jim Urquhart, who has long yearned to take pictures of the Mars Desert Research Station and its crew. "I had tried for years to go, but my story pitches never made the cut," he said Monday in a blog posting. This month, Urquhart finally got the green light from his editors, in part because "science and space exploration have become sexy again," he said.

Urquhart came away impressed by the volunteer astronauts. "I kept thinking to myself that this group of six embodies so much of what I wish I could become," he said. "They were passionate and chasing their dreams."

Chandler, Ariz. has more than a 100-year history with the world’s largest bird, the ostrich, but it wasn't until 1989 that the community decided to celebrate its feathered friend with the annual Ostrich Festival.

The three day event held in late winter or early spring offers your typical fun festival fare with one exception, ostrich racing.

“An ostrich is not really the most intelligent animal in the world,” said Steve Boger, whose Hambone Express brings ostrich racing to the event. “The only thing that’s less intelligent than an ostrich would be a person who would get on one and ride it.”

“It’s kind of like getting in the car with no steering wheel and no seat belt,” he told the Arizona Republic. “You’re definitely at their mercy.”
