Having worked in rubber plantations I can empathise to a very, very small degree with our hardships . . .
Any problems with those nasty centipedes? Their bite is a bastard.
An excellent tale to tell your children.

As for the validity of the story, I can also vouch for it.. I couldn't beleive them doing itI did mention to one of the guys on numerous occasions, just put your degree to good use and go and teach English...the mad fool.. by the way that wasn't to Somtamslap, just to his partner in their crazy endevour
I enjoyed that, too. A good tale.
bladdy hell, you make 10 X more begging, not that I condone begging, but jeez beg a day in a good spot and I think you'll go home with at least a 1.000.
better yet, take a job teaching, and buy a ticket with yer first paycheck and go home.
good story though.
Sometimes my mind wanders, sometimes it leaves completely
fair enough, but a month would've sufficed, or a week even, but nearly a year??!!!Originally Posted by ItsRobsLife

Fair play mate. I take my hat off to you!
Great Read better than Dan Brown any more adventures?
Cheers!
I bought a strimmer (weed wacker/brush cutter) yesterday, exactly the same as the ones we used up the mountain. Brought back alot of good memories, going through the motions of getting it set up and cranking her up. My land is on level ground though and a comparative walk in the park compared to what we (withnallstoke and myself) did those few years ago, actually it was very enjoyable and I've got 5 more rai to start tackling later.
Three years since we finished that mullarky. I was up in Kamphaeng Phet when the military coup went down, 3 years ago this week. Since the daily excursions up the mountain, i've put nearly 20 kilos on in the intervening years. Reckon i'd be dead within a week if i tried doing that again. Real pity we couldnt afford a camera back then.
yes, lovely story, at least you did something worthwhile, something to be proud of
Ah, ain't she a beauty??? Bring back fond memories guys???
^ Pretty much it apart from the blade. I got the arse with cutting down virgin jungle with blunt shitty blades after a couple of months and went into town and bought one the size of a helicopter's rotor..it was beastly I'm telling you, could fell medium size trees with a bit of persistence.
I was doing a visa run to Phnom Penh years ago, 2001 or so.
I was at the hotel bar (Cafe California 2) having a coffee in the morning when this old geezer (he looked about 70 but was probably mid-50's...American) came down the stairs and coughed up half a lung it seemed.
Once he'd gotten over his coughing fit he felt obliged to introduce himself to me.
"Hi! My name is Bob and I own 3 bars in Pattaya" was his opening line. Then he ordered a beer at 9:00 AM.
I thought to myself......Well, I sure as hell know what I am NOT going to ever do in LOS....own a bar.
I also met a really nice American guy on Ko Chang that had a bar. He was a non-drinker, but he still wanted to get away from the bar business. It was driving him nuts as he & his wife couldn't trust the staff so one of them had to be there all the time to work the cash register.
I say good on ya guys for buckling down and doing whatever it took to get by.
Great story behind the moral to it as well.
There's a young Thai guy that works the 7-11 near where I live.
He works double shifts all the time. I see him in there at 10:00 PM and again at 8:00 AM. I have tremendous respect for this person.
Anybody with a good work ethic can prevail.

Jay
Perseverance is admirable . Good story.
Good story hope i never find my self in that situation, but never say never!
Geez, I hate it when I read an old thread, thinking this story sounds familar, then reaslise that it is 2 or 3 years old

bet youve got some stories from samui then chas?
Nothing to top the op mate. I get excited of i'm asked to move me bar stool.
What a remarkable story, but it also scares the shit out of me.
I've been in the bar business for a month or so now and I'm lucky it's going well and the bar is paying for all the building work upstairs to get the rooms finished asap. A trip to Samui for bike week at the weekend has found us bar hunting there and have a few hopefuls. Luckily our original bar can support the rent an we can afford to fail so it's only a gamble really, maybe just a getaway that me and by partner can rotate to. Lets wait and see how long my liver lasts!
Congratulate me guys, I think I'm about to become a pimp!
good luck with that dirk, i managed 2.5 years, not a bad run, try to stay out of the runnings as much as possible of a beer bar, if its not broke when you get it, dont try to fix it. good luck, youll need it! Wwheres your current bar?
ketamine-only fools and horses
Cheers man, committed for at least 15 years...
Current bar/restaurant/guest house (long term leases) is in Hat Yai, city center. After Samui gets underway we'll be looking to open something in Penang then Singapore. We have a good base of customers here from both of the latter so it's a good start for word of mouth. We're also looking to get some mini-buses and do a transport service for visa runs or whatever. Be as well if we're travelling around these places anyway.
Where did you set up shop?
