Jerry Jeff Walker, Austin country music legend, dies at 78

Jerry Jeff Walker, who moved to Austin after becoming famous with the song “Mr. Bojangles” and helped change the Austin music landscape in the 1970s, died Friday evening after an extended battle with throat cancer. He was 78.

Walker’s wife of 46 years, Susan Walker, confirmed Saturday morning that Jerry Jeff died around 6 p.m. Friday at Dell Seton Medical Center at the University of Texas. “He was at home until an hour before his passing,” she said. “He went very peacefully, which we were extremely grateful for.”

Walker had been dealing with throat cancer for several years and had nearly died in 2017. He rallied to finish a new album and played more shows, but a downturn in his health more recently resulted in difficulties with speaking and eating.

Born Ronald Clyde Crosby on March 16, 1942, in Oneonta, N.Y., Walker wrote “Mr. Bojangles” in the mid-1960s after a night in a New Orleans jail where he met a man who “danced a lick across the cell.” Walker released the song as the title track of a 1968 solo album, shortly after he left the New York band Circus Maximus. In 1971, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band took “Mr. Bojangles” to No. 9 on the pop charts. More than 100 other artists also recorded the song, including Bob Dylan, Sammy Davis Jr., Nina Simone and Neil Diamond.

Sean Connery: James Bond actor dies aged 90

Sir Sean Connery has died at the age of 90, his family has said.

The Scottish actor was best known for his portrayal of James Bond, being the first to bring the role to the big screen and appearing in seven of the spy thrillers.

His acting career spanned decades and his many awards included an Oscar, two Bafta awards and three Golden Globes.

Sir Sean's other films included The Hunt for Red October, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and The Rock.

He was largely regarded as being the best actor to have played 007 in the long-running franchise, often being named as such in polls.

His Oscar came in 1988, when he was named best supporting actor for his role as an Irish cop in The Untouchables.

He was knighted by the Queen at Holyrood Palace in 2000.

In August, he celebrated his 90th birthday.

Veteran journalist and author Robert Fisk dies aged 74

Highly regarded, controversial foreign correspondent had long relationship with Ireland

    The RIP Famous Person Thread-fisk-jpg

Robert Fisk joined the London Independent in 1989 and continued to work for that publication until his death.

Veteran foreign correspondent and author Robert Fisk has died after becoming unwell at his Dublin home on Friday.

It is understood the journalist was admitted to St Vincent’s hospital where he died a short time later. He was 74.

Fisk was one of the most highly regarded and controversial British foreign correspondents of the modern era and was described by the New York Times in 2005 as “probably the most famous foreign correspondent in Britain”.

He had a long relationship with Ireland dating back to 1972 when he moved to Belfast to work as Northern Ireland correspondent for the London Times at the height of the Troubles.
He subsequently did his PhD in Trinity College, completing a thesis on Ireland’s neutrality during the second World War. He owned a home in Dalkey where he lived for many years.

His career in journalism started with the Sunday Express in London but that relationship was brief and he soon moved to the Times.

After making a name for himself reporting from Northern Ireland for that paper, Fisk relocated briefly to Portugal and then to Beirut where he worked as Middle East correspondent, once again for the Times.
The world needs more people who plant trees they know they will never sit in the shade of.

Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek dead at 80

Canadian-born TV host had battled pancreatic cancer

Alex Trebek, the former CBC broadcaster who ended up hosting the popular U.S. quiz show Jeopardy! for more than three decades, has died at age 80, the show announced on Sunday.

In March 2019, Trebek announced in a video message that he had been diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer, vowing to "beat the low survival rate statistics for this disease."

Trebek's run on Jeopardy! began on Sept. 10, 1984. The show became a hit with viewers and critics alike, winning six consecutive Daytime Emmys for Outstanding Game Show in the 1990s.

The Emmys has honoured the show with 16 awards overall, and Trebek won the Emmy for outstanding game show host six times.
Trebek told CBC's Rosemary Barton several weeks into treatment last year that he had been heartened by the well wishes from fans and viewers. Maintaining a positive attitude was the only option, he said.
"You've got a choice: You can be pessimistic or you can be optimistic," he said. "It's a lot better to be optimistic."

Yorkshire Ripper serial killer Peter Sutcliffe has died

    The RIP Famous Person Thread-2372011120199682307_5170198-jpg

The serial killer known as the Yorkshire Ripper has died.

Peter Sutcliffe, 74, was one of the UK's most notorious prisoners, having murdered at least 13 women across the north of England in the late 1970s.

He was jailed in 1981 and spent several years at Broadmoor Hospital where he was treated for paranoid schizophrenia. His sentence was made a whole-life term in 2010 before he was transferred to HMP Frankland in County Durham in 2016.

Sutcliffe died at University Hospital of North Durham, three miles from where he was an inmate, a Prison Service spokesman confirmed.

He was sent there after developing
COVID-19, but is understood to have refused treatment for the virus.

The 74-year-old had previously returned to prison after being treated for a suspected heart attack two weeks ago - but was forced to go back to hospital after testing positive for coronavirus.

He was obese and had a number of health problems, including diabetes and heart issues.

Sutcliffe grew up in West Yorkshire and after leaving school held a number of different low skilled jobs, including a job as a gravedigger.

He got married in 1974, but had also become obsessed with female sex workers.

He started attacking women in the late 1960s, but the first known murder happened in 1975 when he killed 28-year-old Wilma McCann, a mother-of-four from Leeds.

Over the following five years he continued killing women across Yorkshire and the North West and as the story of his crimes grew, he became known as the Yorkshire Ripper.

It led the police to advise women in some areas not to go out alone at night.

His 13 known victims were: Wilma McCann, Emily Jackson, Irene Richardson, Tina Atkinson, Jayne MacDonald, Jean Jordan, Yvonne Pearson, Helen Rytka, Vera Millward, Josephine Whitaker, Barbara Leach, Marguerite Walls and Jacqueline Hill.

Richard McCann, the son of his first victim Wilma, told Sky News: "He ruined so many lives.
"He will go down as one of those figures from the twentieth century in the same league I suppose as someone like Hitler."

"It was never just a drunken fight, he went out there with tools and implements and he murdered people again and again and again and again."

Sutcliffe's cause of death has not been confirmed, but will be investigated by the coroner
    ner.

Entertainer Des O'Connor dies aged 88

Entertainer Des O'Connor has died at the age of 88, his agent has confirmed.

The comedian, singer and TV host died on Saturday following a fall at his home in Buckinghamshire just over a week ago.

He was known hosting his own chat show, as well as Take Your Pick and Countdown and for his friendship with Morecambe and Wise.

In a statement his agent said he was "well loved by absolutely everybody" and "loved life".

His longtime agent and family friend Pat Lake-Smith described him as the "ultimate entertainer" and said he had been recovering from the fall before his condition had suddenly deteriorated.

She said: "He was a joy to work with - he was talented, fun, positive, enthusiastic, kind and a total professional. He loved life, and considered enthusiasm almost as important as oxygen."

London-born O'Connor leaves behind his wife Jodie, their son Adam, and his four daughters, Karin, TJ, Samantha and Kristina.
