Was able to get on the river today, which is still mostly frozen solid

That's one way to beat the traffic jams!
^Are there dog sledge races similar to NA?
Not that I know of, but there could well be. From the 1tth of this month until the 23rd they are going to barricade us into our compounds Wuhan style. Days are currently spent teaching remotely and stocking up for a quite frankly pointless lockdown.
Lockdown ended here and the vaccination drive has started. For a variety of reasons, this last lockdown was hardest the both mentally and physically yet. Was grateful get get outside after 14 days of isolation.

That's one serious deep freeze.
Spring is in the air here in Mongolia and I am using the long weekend to take full advantage of the surrounding hills and better weather.

Mandy, it seems that UB has dropped down in the AQI danger spot list lately. Have you noticed an improvement in air quality?
Today it's #46 with an AQI of 67 Moderate.
It's been much better this year despite on and off stay at home orders and people burning more to stay warm. The government have provided briquettes to the ger district for less than the price of raw coal and it really seems to have helped.
The river is flowing again and it feels like spring is finally here after the long freeze. At least walks are permitted this lockdown.

Jeepers, April! That's a long stretch from Xmas!
This morning I woke up the the surprising news that school is canceled, even online. No idea why, but it seems to be political and nothing to do with COVID, because you can't get it from being online, obviously. From next week I will be sat at home until September 1st, which is a long ol' stretch to be doing very little.
My classes get me sane during these lockdowns, it was nice to have some responsibility for others to keep be grounded and mentally well. Not really looking forward to this holiday as much as you would think.
All is good here in UB, I've been on holiday for a few weeks so hence not online much. Taking advantage of the freedom as another sodding lockdown is being mulled. Some pics of the last few weeks.
I got some rollerblades to enjoy the new 14km of bike path, I need to get rid of some lockdown gut!

There was a blizzard recently, the only sensible thing to do was seek shelter in higher ground and rehydrate.

In two months or so it will all be covered under snow, it was nice to get out and see the autumn colors after a week working from home. An in person teaching week from Monday think goodness.
As promised some pics from my trip so far. The train was on old Russian one, probably from before I was born. It was comfortable and warm, almost oppressively so.

I booked all the beds out for the princely sum of 29USD
Just a standard provincial hotel, comfortable and somewhat gaudy in decor.

Erdenet itself was built by the Soviets- it has fantastic infrastructure for a provincial Mongolian town as a result. The architecture largely follows the town planning philosophy of Khrushchev and Brezhnev- there are a lot of blocky panel buildings and Soviet mosaics.

Thanks for the pics, Mandy. Congrats on the medal (from the other thread) & happy new year to you!
After a somewhat drunken catch up with friends in Erdenet, it was time to hit the road. I'm now in Darkhan, if you're into Soviet architecture and mosaics, this place is for you! The town has a very relaxed vibe to it, despite its arguably oppressively look, it's a very friendly and chill place.

Camels, Sand, Goats ...you've been there before TC :)
...^yep...no need to leave the airport bar...
Thanks Mandy...after those pictures, what keeps you there?
It would seem I have the chance to move to Albania, I would be very curious of any members have been or even worked there. I would be based in Tirana.
The other option is move back to Thailand, or stay here for another 2 years. Ultimately I would like to live and work in Thailand at some point.
...well, Albania would be an excellent jump-off point for Kosovo, Bosnia and Upper Macedonia...think of the stories you'd have...
You're young enough to still be thinking about money so does Albania pay better? Thailand will always be there and there's no sign of it's English education improving and you'll be expanding/improving your CV.
I went to Bosnia in 2005, had a blast and met some very interesting characters. It had a fantastic nightlife back then.
I moved to Mongolia around 5 years ago after rocking up at a total dud of a school in China that made a load of false promises and even had the nerve to send pics of another school claiming it to be their own 555. A few days ago I left Mongolia for the forceable future. A few pics from the journey back to blighty

Safe travels Mongol train looks better than Welsh , are the announcements multi lingual?
