I'm not reading that
The article fails to mention that Bold is a dollar billionaire, he's a bit more than just "establishment". I need to make up my mind if I want to stay another two years pretty soon. A lot of this decision is going to rest on how much time I will spend doing this PGCEi
Do you ever let your kids do 'Show and Tell'?

haha, that's good. This week we worked on our creative writing skills...

Needs to check her tenses.
And perhaps her parent's car for blood and dents.
And which nic she posts under on TD.
I came across this movie which may be of interest. Typical royal court infighting but centred around the importance of "fiddlers". Pretty good IMHO, great tale and excellent mood music from the fiddlers.
In Mongolian but English subs included.

Winter is well on the way with -15 forcasted for Monday night
^ & it's only gonna get colder... :)
I actually like winter, which puts me in a minority. 26-2th are public holidays this month, might head to the countryside for some good ol writing exile
Interesting article on Mongolian Fossils on the beeb. Could inspire a lesson or two.

Cheers for the link! Since I last posted a pic of the might river it has now frozen solid. The drunken winter shortcut home is back!

So within the next month I need to make a decision if I am staying for another 2 years or not, the email is sitting in my inbox but thankfully doesn't need a response for a while yet-about 3 weeks.
Pros of staying:
Genuinely enjoy living here and want for little
Pretty solid saving potential, nice enough digs and good health insurance if I ever needed it.
Lots of hiking and outdoorsy stuff.
It's a bit different, and I like different
Don't always agree with management, but they are reasonable to deal with on a day to day basis and pretty helpful to us expats.
Locals are friendly
Even if the cold is uncomfortable, UB is pretty livable and not what I would term a hardship post. The countryside would be a different matter.
Cons:
The pollution- it's bad, everyone knows it and everyone gets made sick from it at some point. Todays grumble: Sinus infections + -22 in the morning temps aren't much fun
Flying anywhere can become expensive and time consuming- no cheap weekends away
I miss swimming outside
Some elements of Mongolian work culture strike me as distinctly unhealthy- forced social and sporting events etc. The parents are seen as customers and that can have some "interesting" ramifications.
What is the pollution like at all your alternates? Where does "pollution" appear in your list, major, medium or minor irritant?
Choices eh, such a chore. :)
That needs expanding and comparing to your alternates.
Have you made a spread sheet of the alternatives locations and totalled them up yet? Get cracking there's a deadline looming.
Assuming you stay will the alternates still be available if required in the future?
Assuming you stay what progression will you make/expect? Would that be available at your alternates?

"Pretty solid saving potential"
Sorry dude, that is nowhere near my top of my list.
We only live once and that place looks like a desolate shithole.
Prolly why i have been skint most of my adult life, bit lived a life or three that most people could not comprehend.
I lived in Nanjing for 18 months and the pollution was awful there. Rarely saw a blue sky.
Knowing what the AQI normally is in Ulan Batar, there is not a chance in hell that I would ever work there. Your health should be your top priority. Money will not help you if you are breathing in poisoned air everyday...
I agree with Joffrey. I stayed four years and suffered miserably in the end because of it.. (got pneumonia, stayed ll days in the hospital, and still now am extremely sensitive to smoke/pollution (had to get an inhaler). Move on as you've been there awhile. We all know in the international field it is good to move on after three or four years. Health is important, and you can make the same or more money in places like Korea/Japan/Taiwan if you really want.
Although, ultimately if you are really enjoying it, then by all means stay. We can't tell you what to do, ultimately, you will do what you think is best.
Back in the UK for 14 days, it's nice to be out of sub-zero temperatures
A change of scenery for a couple of weeks, took a wander around the local marshes near "Great" Yarmouth

It's been nice to see family but it will also be nice to be back in Mongolia. So to answer OhOh, I have whittled it down to two choices.
1. Stay in Mongolia
2. Go back to Thailand
You're mid-30's and seem to get good holiday time back in Blighty and back to Thailand each year.
If the saving potential of a 2 year Mongolian contract would mean the difference between buying your Thai condo or not, doing another 2 years would probably be worth it. Just count down the few months to the next end of term holiday each time.

Bleak skies and cold waters. 4 more days and I am headed home to UB
Ah, the 'Going back to England for Christmas' faux pas.
Don't feel bad Mandy, it's kind of a rite of passage.
There'll come a time when you get over the food, too. :D
Save the UK for August.
This trip was been a mixed bag, the main reason for going back was to see my grandmother who is in the mid-stages of dementia; it's depressing as fuck- if I had enemies, I wouldn't even wish it on them. As for staying in Mongolia I got an email from work cheerfully informing me the air is so toxic the school has to remain closed for another week. At least I'll have a week to rest from the flights. I hate making big decisions.
Perhaps before you go, you can go shopping for a respirator with ultrafine filter ? With extra cartridges...
Yes and no,OhOh- it seemed to depend on the time of day, better in the morning than evening, that's for sure. While it is always nice to have a short trip "home", the depressing side is seeing people age. Now this is inevitable, but it seems more stark to me due to not having seen them for so long...I guess.
Yes some live very fruitful lives and suddenly it's obvious they are struggling. Then it's watching them withdraw into their own world. Sad but many are ending up that way these days, as physical care is available to the masses in many countries.
^^Just be glad you’re still only seeing it in other people, Mandy.
It’ll be in your passport photos soon enough. :D

Went to a lecture this weekend on what this can do long term it did not make for happy listening. The air is back to its normal winter self and I am grateful to be in a position where I can buy masks and an air purifier without having to take a loan about, those up in the ger districts don't have it so lucky. I think I will be moving on in June, I've enjoyed my time here but I am also rather keen on having working lungs.
^yes, lungs are important, especially in the long run. The past week, I've been exposed to volcanic ash due to the Taal volcano explosion, and it's not good. They say that volcanic ash is like glass and it doesn't get dislodged if in the lungs already. I wear N95 mask outdoors.
Anyway, re: your work, why not try S. Korea or Japan? Bettyboo has been in Korea for many years and seems to like it there. PB has also had good experiences, accdg to her stories. As for Japan, Wally is there, as is Dicky. You could ask them for opinions re: teaching jobs. Cheers and good luck in your future endeavours! :)
Where's your fancy this time?
A bit hungover today so a bracing walk into town was on the cards, I unexpectedly found some ice sculptures in the main square.
