Yup cheers EG will do I,ll try and bring as much as I can weight allowed that is ,, my missus has allready booked most of my suitcase for sweet tins for the family lol .

I have loads of clothes in Thailand allready ,, just hope I can still get into them nearly 2 years down the line :mid: ( leave it Dill ) :)

Yes you are correct about the medium changing business , when I first started painting it was oils 100% for around 25 years never touched anything else , then I tried watercolour doing things the way I found out in the library books I used to teach myself , and to be fair I was getting some cracking results , now I have moved away from them over the last couple of years into pastels and back into oils and TBH , I have got lazy and bloody complacent , and as you well know that will just not do in watercolour.

It sure is a testing medium , BUT , I wont let it beat me , I will come back with some better ones :)

If your weight is an issue you might want to check out British Post. Really quick (generally about 5-6 days from Bromley's) not beat all to shit and from what I recall not that dear on the purse strings. Just an Idea.... Mail to me, out-laws or
whatever.

Paints, charcoal, pastels can't be that heavy. Plenty of pre-primed canvas avail and for water color Arches is handy if you like that paper. Not noticed pastel papers but will check before your departure.

In an earlier post I showed a sunset scene that was incomplete. The idea was to see how easy or difficult it was to rework acrylics. This is the original:

Now the reworked version:

added some highlites and some detail. Reworking the clouds - to tone them down some - proved to be nigh impossible. The high chroma of the red-orange just didn't want to be softened.....

So the outcome is, yes, it can be reworked but be careful on the initial version to use lower chroma hues if your intending to blend in a transparent overcoat. Lesson learned.

Yeah paper tends to warp a little even though its not really wetted. As an oily you probably could step right into acrylics.... drying time can be delayed somewhat and you don't have to wait for second or subsequent coats.

Great stuff here. I wonder how many have artists as parents or grandparents? Just amazing pics here. Many of you could easily paint for a living I would think.

Thankyou Balance for your kind praise , we are basically a bunch who enjoy critiquing each others efforts and trying to offer / share tips to help us progress a bit .

BTW there were no artists anywhere in our family tree ,,,, mind you looking at some of my efforts I guess you had allready come to that conclusion :mid:

Continuing along on the Chinese landscape theme ,, tonight I have very little spare time so I am just toying around with some ideas for a new painting .

Just pushed some charcoal around to get an idea of tonal strengths , this can be a good excersise to help you in the painting .

LoL, no artists in the family but loaded with musicians.... of the four siblings three were pretty good pianists and one an excellent trumpeter/writer (even was invited to try out for the Tonight Show orchestra).

I personally would make more money selling lemonade on the street than any paintings I have done. Ever bought lemonade on the street????? thought so.... equals my potential income.

I think you'll find that most "artists" are more into the personal gratification of being able to accomplish something that is purely enjoyable. Especially those that have concluded stressful careers.

Good words there EG ,, like the bit about concluding stressful careers ,, to me there is nothing better than setting up somewhere quiet to spend a few hours trying to recreate whats in front of you ,, allthough the painting can be stressful at times , the location is relaxing lol

Been filling in the old visa form for me upcoming stay in Thailand ,, kinda got me in the holiday mood a bit thinking of our last holiday to Lanzarote , so had a look through some of the many pics I took and had a go at this one ,, ok its only one of those tiny canvas cards again took me exactly one hour to do .

Windsor + Newton oil paints .

I think I have managed to capture what I remember of that dangerous looking cold swirling Atlantic Ocean ,, cheers

Did someone spill some paint Blue?

Now last weekend that last picture above I done from Lanzarote was seen by someone who asked me if she could buy it ,, now I told her it was too small for the wall she wanted to put it on ,, but I would do one bigger which would suit the job in hand better.

Also she wanted it if possible in landscape format to match another one she had.

This is a little of what I have been up to so far this weekend , just a start pic to give you the feel of where I went with it ,,

Now the next pic is as far as I can go before different glazes will be applied ,, this is painted on a box canvas and will be mounted in a box frame that I am gonna make ,, it will be slightly sunken inside the frame and the frame will be whitewashed to try to set it off .

I think the long landscape frame is quite effective in this case also.

I,ll be honest and say sometimes the pics on here look bettter than in the real , it,s not my fault its the way it comes out ,, in this case the real one looks better than this shot , the rocks on the foreground r/hand side are much darker and pronounced.

BTW the client I,m doing it for is really pleased with it so far so I,m pleased about that ,, hope to have it all glazed and varnished and handed over before I go to Thailand in October .

You cannot see it on here but I covered the canvas in black gesso then coated it with a thin layer of flake white before I began , now its drying and the paints stretching a bit the desired effect is showing through a bit from underneath ,, which unifies the whole thing nicely
