Has anybody tried those 'thousand year old egg' things?

I'e eaten some of those eggs that've turned like a clear black. They're OK, just taste like a strong egg.
I'm going to come right out and buck the trend here. I love that stinking street food. I think it's aroy mak mak! However, you have to eat it correctly. A few weeks ago I bought some of that Issan sausage at a 7-11 and asked my wife to cook it for breakfast. She looked at me like I was crazy and said "there's no cabbage, ginger and chilies, it won't taste right". Well, she was right, it tastes great when you eat it on the street with cabage and ginger, but when you eat it with fried eggs and toast, well, the taste was a bit - unusual is the best word to use.
ontop of that it's cheap as hell!

Nope, I don't know what it is either. But some of it looks like its got wings.
They were selling deep fried scorpions outside Nana a while ago, even my wife turned her nose up at that.
Just like most of those insects, they are usually re-fried several times and therefore much too oily, but they are surprisingly neither particularly offensive nor especially nice.Originally Posted by Dougal
Hi there,newbie alert!
On the way to the beach in Hua Hin there are food stalls selling all sorts, was reccomended by a friend to try small squid on sticks,a bit wary at first as there were insects buzzing about but one of the best things i have ever tasted.
my last day over there,in kanchanaburi i felt brave and had buffalo meatballs, small (bantam?) eggs and some sort of crab on sticks, really nice too,but had the 'squits' tablets just incase of emergency
In Hua Hin theres a restaurant called THE BOAT up the road from the regana gardens hotelnext to the 'bus stop'(seems a well known place) tried all sorts of spicy food one evening, glad i had them tablets
Hi there BZ.
Hua Hin is pretty civilized, you really have to travel up country to experience the fulll ethnic diet.
I presume you mean that big concrete boat at Khao Takiab, quite nice but a bit pricey as it has pretentious of grandeur. I usually try to avoid eating anything, shall we say 'exotic', just before flying as I hate spending 11 hours in an aircraft toilet.
When were you in HH last?
Lord, deliver us from e-mail.
Hi Dougal, the boat restaurant is a small restuarant about 2 mins walk from the hotel,i was in Hua hin last september,i have a few places around thailand to see next time but plan to base myself at HH.
I haven't tried the scorpions, but I've tasted most of the other insects. They're not bad once you get over the 'Urrghhhhhh' feeling. The tastiest was wasp larvae fried with garlic. They were selling deep fried scorpions.....
I haven't plucked up the courage to try any of the bugs, although I have heard favourable reports of fried crickets so I may give them a whirl.
But then, I eat haggis and black pudding and my wife thinks they're revolting.
Another dried squid stool.
or should that be stall
Another bbq stall, this is a half farang half thai one.
But here is a yucky Thai one.
And for the Issan people, here is their stall.
fok me DD: just about rolled off my seat laughingOriginally Posted by dirtydog

Ive never got sick from eating at the food carts but draw the line at bugs etc. humpty
I eat street food all the time and am never sick. Nothing else to eat some barbecued chicken and 3 baht worth of kao neow and I am happy.
Now that's my idea of a food stall.Originally Posted by Dirty Dog
BBQ'd chicken and somtam.
Food doesn't ever get better than that, unless of course you add a catfish on a stick.
has anyone tried the fish tanks of small shrimp ? u eat them alive so u have a wiggingly mouthful of shrimp...
actually pretty good.
i also tried the little ants - but they taste way hot ! like peppers
Yes, not bad, i try my best to kill them off in the lemon and chille juice first mind you. In truth you only taste the sauce...Originally Posted by kingwilybodlht5na
I prefer them small too, if they are too big you can feel their long feeler things in your mouth. i don't like that.
I beg to differ.Originally Posted by ChiangMai noon
There are some sad sick foks on this board aint there anyway here is an Issan food stall in Banphe, I assume they got whores there aswell, not that all Issan gals are whores of course, just seems that quite a lot of them are
Anyway this food stall doesn't sell dead animal parts, yep the old corn on the cob stall, now this old hag sells the corn for 12 baht per kilo, I mean at this sort of price would you bother growing your own? of course not.
she will also bbq it for you as well, no idea how much that service costs.
