Ever been asked to prodice it?

I only carry it when driving interstate on the highways, but hardly ever get asked.

I am right that to the letter of the law we're sposed to carry it all the time.

Anyway, I call STTTOOOPPID on anyone who carries their overstayed passport in Thailand other than to the airport.

I thought the "letter of the law" states we are to carry ID at all times, for those here on holiday the passport would be the only valid recognized form of ID. For those that have a Thai ID (your passport number is on it) then this will suffice.

Saying that I have pulled my drivers licence and old matey has insisted on passport as well, I told him to sling it as I did not carry it (lock in my desk drawer at work with my work permit)....he did not pursue it.

you have a link for that yeah as it has always been my understanding that one must carry a recognised form of ID, if you are a tourist it would be a passport, if you are not a tourist it would be a drivers licence or some other official government supplied ID, never have I read that you must provide proof of your permission to stay.

In the case of a driver's licence as I said that has your passport number on it, immigration can easily call in the number to check your status.

I suggest you check your facts before opening your pie hole but Iam happy to be proven wrong and will apologise accordingly.

It's obvious. You can get a one or five year license without having a one or five year permission to stay.
Immigration law is you must carry proof of permission to stay.

Bullshit, Thai law is you must carry ID.

Show to me the immigration law that says you must prove your permission to stay.

Are you saying that if an immigration bib asks you for proof of permission to stay, you would refuse and only offer your DL, which offers no information as to you visa status?

    Good question.

Immigration "bib" don't usually trawl for permission of stay stamps, you encounter this often ?

Normally the convential "bib" pick you up and if they suspect anything not right they call on the immgration "bib"................

    You know differently obviously.

Off note I do note carry my passport at all as it is at work in my desk with my work permit, recently I got done for drink driving and not once through the whole ordeal was my "permission to stay" questioned.

^ don't usually, no. But at any time they can ask you to produce it, in which case, a DL is worth nix. At any time they suspect you are illegAl they can detain you, this is all through the immigration act. That they usually accept a DL is not a guarantee.

Who the "bib" or the immi "bib" ?

You see many immigration people trawling the streets pulling over random "farangs" to see their paperwork.........................

This has been discussed at length before and we never got a definitive answer.

My personal experience has been that, at road check points, normal BiB will ask for your DL and
Immigration check points will ask for your passport.
That's why I carry both when driving.

No usually set up 15-25 kms from a border crossing.
I have been stopped at several.

Customs & Excise and the "Timber" police also have their own check points

As definitive as I know of.

Thai Law does not require you to carry your passport. It does require you prove you are in Thailand legally. If you have no proof you can be arrested until you show proof. Same thing goes for Thais except they can show Thai I.D. card.

Bottom line, if a cop asks for proof unless you produce your passport he can by law arrest you. A copy is not proof.

    Thai Immigration Act

    Chapter 7
    Miscellaneous

Section 58 : Any alien who has no lawful document for entering the Kingdom under Section 12 (1); or has no Residence Certificate under this Act; and also has no identification in accordance with the Law on Alien registration, is considered to have entered into the Kingdom in violation to this Act.

Section 59 :The Director General, or the competent official deputized by Director General, shall have the authority to arrest and suppress any person violating this Act. They shall also have the authority to issue a subpoena, warrant of arrest or search, make arrest , search , or detain. They shall also have the authority to conduct inquiry into the offense against the provisions of this Act in the same manner as the inquiry official under the Criminal Procedure Code.

Well, this poster carries a copy of his passport - the page with the visa and the title page plus a copy of my Tabien Baan Leung (Yellow Book) in the glove compartment available for any officer of the law if asked.

Never been asked for anything beyond my driver's license.

I have never been asked to show passport even up near Mae sot where there are numerous road blocks the closer you get to Burma. Never asked for any id once they saw I was a Farang. Same goes to approaching the border area near Preah Vihear. all were military road blocks not police

You can NOT get a 5 year dl until after u have had ur dl for the 1 year

I have been told that if they do ask for ur passport u have 1-2 hours to produce it, ( u dont leave but call someone to bring it to u). if ur not near home that would be a hassle but if ur truly traveling cant see why u wouldn't have ur passport with u,

I've never been asked DL only. Although my neighbour (Swedish ) has been here a while said that he was stopped in the local town whilst on foot and his passport was demanded by a stroppy cop . he said he phoned home and five minutes later our pu yai bhan called back to his mobile and cleared the matter.
this was a few yrs ago and the only time I've heard anything of the sort in 10 yrs.

I arrive at BBK on 29 June at 11:05PM (from the U.S., on a U.S. passport). I plan on waiting until after midnight to go through immigration, if I can be assured of getting a 30 day visa, stamped starting 30 June. I leave on 31 July from BKK. If I can get them to stamp me on 30 June, I will have been in LOS 31 days. Is there still that one grace day, if leaving from BKK? The worst case scenario is that I will be stamped n on 29 June and be in LOS 32 days and pay the 1,000 baht fine on leaving. Its still cheaper than paying the Thai consulate in Chicago $45 to obtain a 60 day visa.

^ that means going through immigration, not landing at the airport

but if money is tight, then waiting the hour or less would be worth it

in fact, if your plane is scheduled to land at 11.05pm, you will not be out of it before around 11.30

then you can join the immi queues at 11.45 and pass through around 12.10am

    solved
    I have reported your post

I just paid $105 to renew my 5 year old's U.S. passport. My wife renewed her thai passport last year, so she is good to go on 28 May, but her two daughters and our 5 year old need to renew their thai passports. So, we are making a 1,100 mile round trip to Chicago this Monday (returning Tuesday) to visit the Thai consulate in Chicago. Thai passports (at $35 a piece) require bio metrics and require a visit in person. I'll take my passport with me and see if they will give me a 60 day visa for free, which I doubt. I just can't see spending the money for a 60 day visa when I may only need it for 1 day, particularly since the thai officials give one day's grace when leaving out of BKK. Besides, it means more money for my perimeter wall.

they usually let u slide one day over,
after but if ur 2 days over it will cost ya 1,000 baht, ( 550/day)

There are no free tourist visas ( that ended back in early 2012)

Since ur going to the embassy just pay for the visa as its just safer, am sure they will mail it to u if u provide the envelope an postage as the consolute in la does.
