That was Mr Earl that posted that, I wouldn't have a clue what he's on about.
I think he's on about Pla Chon (snakehead fish), they are carnivors and can also "walk" from pond to pond (I think). I don't see that a few of them in a pond riggers size would be a problem.
I've actually introduced them into my pond as I'm not doing fish comercialy and they are one of my favurate eating fish. They wont take a well grown fish anyway but if you had an adult Pla Chon in there when you put the fingerlings in it would play havok.
The first year I stocked mine with 2000 Pla Dook and 1000 Pla Nin and was feeding them about half a kg of food a day, sold some from the shop ate some and gave loads away, probaly broke even on it. This year it's teaming with fish again and we have'nt stocked it at all, I'm not feeding them anything this year apart from stale bread and some scraps. I've put 20 Pla Chon in as when the fingerlings start growing a bit more there will be no where near enough natural food supply in the pond to feed them. My BiL also put about half a dozen turtles in there that he's hoping will gorw to make turtle curry out of
Get some plants in there and use some shit to "green up" the water. A light suspended on a pole over the pond is great as it will to attract insects in the night (obviously of you only have Pla Nin or Tap Tin dont bother as they are veggies). We've also got loads of Pak Bung growing in ours which provides food for us and the fish.

I fish with a net but with a rod and line and the pond stocked to those levels you'll probaly be catching fish every few miniutes
I have more than the average number of arm and legs

How do you keep the locals from midnight shopping

I built my fish pond 45m x 25m x 3.5m deep and have lined the banks with various fruit trees. However our house is several kms away and during night drive bys I've noticed people at my pond by the lights on their heads. Also I found hidden fishing rods, my wife says our pond is too deep for them to use a net. I haven't stocked it with fish but there are plenty from the rice paddys. Its amazing how many species there are many I've seen sold in pet stores back home. Anyways good luck with your project!
There is a picture of my pond at my family website karamanosfamily.com/images/Pond2.jpg

    Cheers,
    Peter

The people with lights are probably after frogs.....it would have to be a dammed deep pond for it to be too deep for a net, anyway you'd just chuck some food in and then cast the net, you'd get a couple every time. The ammount people could probably take out with a rod is negligible

    They cut my fence too.

The pond is 3.5 m deep my wife figures its too deep to use a net. She says they will also take large truck batteries to shock the fish then scoop from the surface. I don't know if that would work in my pond because it is very large a 45m x 25m x 3.5m. They have cut my fence in several spots for easy access to my fish and fruit. I really don't mind so long as they only cut it enough for them to get in and not the livestock. All I'm really concerned about is my trees growing so someday we can make a house on our land when electricity comes and have mature trees.

I would be well pissed if they were cutting my fence. Maybe hire someone to stay nights to watch over the place. I agree with RC that 3.5 meters isn't too deep for a net and could clean you out of fish pretty quick if using them. If they're cutting your fence, they could take a small boat and cover the whole LxW while throwing nets.

Really I don't care if they take fish since I haven't stocked it. We plan on building there some day so as long as my trees are ok they can take the fish. The fence is only barbed wire so it can be fixed easily. They only cut the bottom wire for easy access, water buffallo and cattle can't get in. If I try to stop them they might retaliate and damage my crops or trees plus it will cost me money. Someday when we build there the free lunches will stop in the mean time they can eat the fruit and fish they haven't damaged my trees so no worries.

SP, That's a good attitude to have and I understand where you're coming from. Beautiful big pond you have there with plenty or natural fish food.

    The question is answered!

My wife told me today that the landowner next to our farm caught 2 farmers using a net last night at our farm. He warned them he would tell the village head if he seen them near our pond again or his. Apperantly they had a nice haul. So much for my pond being too deep! The father in law has put barbed wire in the pond. I don't like the idea because if the net gets stuck and its abandoned it will kill fish continuosly.

I just tried to upload some pictures but not working will try again tomorrow. We have the old uncle living out there now and lives in a small wood hut if you could even call it that have to wait about 6 more months for the ground to settle I think before we build the day house between the two ponds . The fish have atleast doubled in size in 6 weeks. Feeding them twice a day. I will be back home in a week and will update it then.

    Update

well the fish have growen a lot in the two and a half months since we put them in they are just about ready to sell. Heres a few that the missus had caught for our final 3rd year house party. I guess feeding them twice a day really makes them grow fast. The Blanin is not growing as fast and are about 6" long now

The dams seem to be holding water well but will drain the small dam which has about 2000 fish in it and sell the fish and pump the water into the larger dam if needed later in the year

So far so good the uncle is still living out there and have started fencing the block off

Nice size fish in that time. i have been looking at comercial farming my self when i come over but in long cement tanks. Problem is large quanties of fish in confined space breathing and shitting creates vast amounts of nitrogen which causes unhealthy fish and deaths in your stock. So you need constant water changes. But this post has changed my mind.
Bufallo shit in early stages when fingerlings go in turns the water a lovely shade of green which helps the fingerlings grow quickly and thrive in this enviroment.but not for long as they eat all the growth. Thai farners have been doing this for ages in their rice paddies.
I notice the edges of the ponds are devoid of any plant material or water lillys. If you can introduce some plant material and reeds on the edges it will help premote other aquatic life to inhabit your ponds and keep the pond healthy.
I was talking with a USA researcher and he has been doing studies that shows that fish that are exposed to bright light when feeding stimulates their paturity gland and they will eat 20% more when being fed, so night time feeding is out according to him.
I would be interesed to know what you are feeding them ?
    as commercial foods are expensive.
The comment about a latern over the pond to attract insects is interesting.
A solar panel hooked up to an inverter and batteries driving a bright light would be my thoughts.
I will watch this thread with some interest i am sure there are other members that could start their own ponds.

Havent thrown a rode in for months but there must be some good size fish in there now unless they have all been eaten
