What air con do I need?

I have 3 rooms that I would like to air condition.

The smallest is about 15m2.

The next size up is 22m2

And the largest one is about 50m2.

I have looked at the following brands.

daiken, panasonic and LG.

What is BTU? Is that the same as hp?

I have been given prices on 18,000, 12,000 and 9,000 btu on the above brands. Can someone please translate this into english for me.

Also what would you recommend I need in terms on BTU for the above sized rooms.

Go to an air con makers site, they usually have "calculators' As a guide to the cooling capacity required in British Thermal Units (BTU's), calculate the volume of your room ie length x width x height (in feet). As a general rule of thumb, each cubic foot of space requires 5 BTU's of cooling capacity, so you need to multiply the volume by 5.
Then you have to consider windows etc -easy eh!

A BTU is a British Thermal Unit, is a measure of heat.

The amount of heat that it takes to lower/raise I gallon of pure water 1 degree in 1 hour at sea level, I believe, been so damn long I really don't remember.
In my bedroom I have a 12k BTU and in the diningroom which is open into the living room is a 25K BTU.
But the company should have a chart with what they reccomend.
But if you go to small then it will just run all the time and never cool it and if it is large enough then you will not be able to afford to run it now with the power prices up so high.
When I got mine they ran all the time, 4000 baht a month,, now to run just during the day is 8K a month. So I only cool the bedroom at night.

1 1/2 ton
3 ton or two 1 1/2 ton
12,000BTU/hr = 1 ton

BTU = amount of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 pound of water by 1 degree Fahrenheit
BTU is a unit of energy
BTU/hr is a unit of power
one ton is an american unit in cooling referring to 12,000 BTU/hr
Sometimes these aircon units are rated in kw. 1 kw = 3410 BTU/hr

You cannot imagine the pleasure it gives me to read about BRITISH THERMAL UNITS being converted as our chums across the pond have to use them !
Is this the first crack in the armour( cant say chink in the armour or some smart arse will accuse me of being racist ).

Can I now look forward to a return to sensible thread sizes - Whitworth- BA- BSF- and get rid of this "unified " shit with A/F spanners!
( I do not accept that the metric thread system exists- )OK ! We kicked shit out of Napoleon but we are now forced to use his system with units designated as "mm" - In my world MM stands for Mickey Mouse and that about sums it up

Don't let me start on spelling!
Just a bit though !

I feel sure that the UK could start a new export trade and send boxes of the letter "u" for free distribution to American schools with instructions on where they should go - into words like - labor- color - armor etc etc

Bloody hell I feel a lot better now !

Rogers and Mayhew- Engineering Thermodynamics, Work, and Heat Transfer, 3rd Ed, 1980)
The British Thermal Units (BTU) are related to the kilo Joule kJ (metric) by the definitions:
1.8BTU/lb=1Chu/lb=4.1868kJ/kg which leads to 1 ftlbf = 1/778.169 BTU = 1/1400.7 Chu (Celsius Heat Unit).

But Airporttwo has it in a nut shell.
Two things to consider though, insulated walls and ceilings can reduce the size by 25-30%. (I have a 6x3x3 metre bedroom in Korat and use a 9000 BTU unit) we need a doona to sleep.
Salesmen will always sell the biggest with the most profit margin.

I do not recommend the cheap LG units. They're noisy and inefficient.

I do recommend Saijo Djenki (or whatever the spelling is). Excellent units.

Interesting.
Two shop owners told me not to buy one.
I still went ahead and bought it and it has been fine.
Had it two years now and it is quieter than the Hitachi and Davey that I had before.

I used to work in an appliance manufacture and did benchmark for a few air-con brands, Mitsubishi is the best one.

Personally I prefer to buy units with around 30 to 40% more capacity than actually needed. I reckon it probably extends compressor life, etc.

Another important thing to keep in mind is that you need 500BTU per person in that room, so if it is your orgy room and you got like 20 people in there you would need an extra 10,000BTU to counter act their body heat, I hope this advice helps

We currently have a total of 6 units of varying sizes and have had over many years. Totally pleased.

As a side note we do have regular scheduled upkeep done on all of our units.
