Grounding wires?

I have got tired of be shocked everytime I touched my computer. Today i had the damn thing grounded.


The guy who has done all of the work says that in Thailand it is impossible to ground the fuse box like in Amerika.

He is right. Because the government don't want to pay for more safety for their people.

If they want to have ground thingy like the US, they have to re-do electricity system which they have to spend lots of money which they don't want to pay.

Anyway, I have heard that they will do that in the next 5 year (this news I heard 2 years ago). Anyway, in new houses're built in a couple years till now they start to use this kind of electric outlet.



Which we can think that they will do the gournd thingy soon.

You should still be able to take your own connections to ground, you would just need to establish your own ground and run everything to it. Drive a big steel rod into the ground, chances are you will end up with a very nice ground. Not sure if this would impact circuit breakers or not though, my specialty is not electrical. At work we do have cool 13kv 3 phase extension cords though, I will try get a pic of one. When they blow up there is a massive arc, it's pretty cool.

I dunno how, not my area of expertise. I insisted on it when it was being built though and I saw them but the earth spike in (big copper rod). The earth wires run from that to the sockets I think. All the sockets have got three wires live, neutral and earth (only the lighting circuits arent earthed of course).

Ask a builder, I'm sure there's one who posts around here somewhere....

There's 2 types of grounding
1.System ground
2.Equipment ground, this one is what Hillbilly's technician just did it.

All the new sockets I have put in recently are 3 pin, I haven't attached anything to the earth pin though, but still, for some reason I feel that little bit safer, like a dog driving a car with a license....

But this will mean you cannot use any european appliances anymore without changing the plug.

I'm a lucky bastard. The previous farang owner of my house got it earthed because he was fed up with getting shocks from his computer casing.

In my area, if you go to the electricity office in Banglamung or Homepro inside Carrefour (Pattaya) you will see a mini 30 amp circuit on display showing a typical consumer box, earth rod, circuit breakers etc.
Not an expert, but it shows what to install.

Since I am fairly knowledgeable about Mains grounding and safety, I viewed the above reference. While I was a bit skeptical at first, there's quite a lot of good and accurate information there! It is worth a view.

I don't think they do the real earth for you, Marmers.

Some of the plugs at marmers new place do have a proper earth, it's even got an earthing rod out the back of the building.

I cant believe it is that easy Marmite..
To start with , there should be an extra cable for safety ground going to your outlets.
If there is, you have to change your outlets from 2-pin to 3-pin , not only the faceplate.

The box in GoW's picture can accomodate a combination of up to 3 pieces, for instance two 2-pin outlets and one lampswitch. And you buy faceplates corresponding to how many items you have populated the box with.

Problem is that the 3-pin outlet is much wider so there is only room for two of them in the box. It's almost impossible to combine a 3-pin outlet with anything else..

Yes, there is an extra earth cable going to the boxes. Yes, I know I will have to change the box as well as the face-plate. I will probably change them for combination UK/Thai face plates, as the UK plates are the bestest.

Instead of grounding and rewiring, I got one of them auromatic circuit interrupters.
The salesguy made me stand in a puddle of water and grab a live wire. didn't feel a thing. Impressive!

I thought that the circuit breaker kicks off if there is any leakage. They dont need those when there is grounding.

I am talking of the big box where the wires come in, not your own fuse box.

If I have any problems, the box just cuts out the power. That is why earthing should not be necessary (I hope!!)

If you are getting shocks off your PC, it has a problem, not your power

as DD said, it should be fixed. There must be some leakage to the cae and you are acting as an earth, but it must be very small otherwise the breaker would break.

You can connect wire with any live part of your PC to the earth. Hehehehe..

Yes, you are right. I think they have 2-3 types system rounding conductor which depend on voltage. Well, I don't want to go to details because I almost forget all what I studied.

Anyway, I am not sure if they connect system grounding at Marmite's new house but I saw some outlets have 3 pins and some have 2 pins.
