Retaining Walls(Holding it all in)

As I previously posted we are soon going to have the Landfill done,and will need to Build a good strong Retaining wall to hold all of this soil in place, so that it does not spread onto the surronding Rice Paddies and pissoff all of the NativesWhat in your considered opinions would be the best Method to employ for a really strong job.When the landfill goes in it wil be 1.5M or thereabouts,but will obviously settle over the next couple of years to around about a Meter I should Imagine.There will be a considerable amount of weight againts the proposed Retaining wall,and I only want to have to have it constucted one time,so suggestions Please

ermmmm, it's when you stick rocks together with cement Shall take a picture tomorrow, basically just pour a ground beam at your perimeter and go up 1 meter high with a sloping wall of big stones or small rocks.

Something like this but take it up at 45 degrees, this land has been raised and sloped towards the road.



Dirt on the inside goes to the top of the stone wall, then an ordinary wall and security grills on top.

That looks nice but rocks cost a bit !
I f you have a large length to do and expect it to get covered with vines or something there are cheaper and quicker ways - and the end result looks ok as well I recently did retaining walls for a tennis court - will take some pics tomorrow and sort out the drawings for the concrete - hope to post them tomorrow evening !

Cheers DD,thank's for the Pic,yes that does look really good,but I am looking at having about 200m of wall done,and maybe the cost would start to runaway a bit.I understand that the wall would have to be angeled,similar principal to that of a Rampart,I have built Many of these over the year's here in the UK,as I am a Brickie by Trade.I had thought of Building a Retainer the same as I would here in the Uk,using Like the 9 inch Pots.First running a Ground Beam around the perimiter,with lenghts of rebar for the use of,laying the blocks so that the rebar runs up through the centre of the pots,and the fill the lot with Lean Mix.Are 9 inch hollow blocks avalible in Thailand?

Thats how I did the topside wall holding the garden back from the court . Works fine !
The end wall that was about 2m high cos the court was built on a slope and that held the court in place!- was a bit different
Still put a ground beam in with cast pillars leaning inwards- spaced to suit precast concrete beams - cheap as chips - they are about a foot wide with tensioned re bar inside and about 2.5 inches thick - can get them up to 4 m long - I used 3m.

Just stack them edge to edge as the level of the infill rises - get no problem from water pressure buildup as it drains out between the slabs with no problem .

Happyman thanks for your last post,I thought that I had seen the type of precast walling that you are talking about,but was not sure.If we are talking about the same thing,it comes in the form of precast concrete post,in which there is a slot,to recieve the precast concrete planks??.if so thats realy good news,as we have a place not far from us in Thailand,that produce all type of precast concrete Building Product,from memory I think the companies name is Champ or something like that

Havnt seen the posts with slots in
I just made the posts about 9 " wide and each beam had 4.5" to rest on - the weight of the fill kept ( and still keeps !) them in place.

To support the weight and pressure from the fill behind the wall you should have "T" shape back braces put in and buried into the fill so it holds the wall from bowing outward from the weight of the fill, this is not done most times and in a short while the wall bows out and eventually falls, I have had to go in and do a lot of digging and fab work with steel and concrete to repair walls and it is cheaper and easier to do it before hand when it is being built.

Why not just fill in an area of land roughly twice the size of the proposed building and gently slope the land down?

Hills look nicer than islands in my opinion.
