    Well, well well.

    If it isn't Mr DIY.

Back once again with the chisel and plaster, Grade 4 bandage, window sill and painter.

So I got this big ass fugly well right in front of the ze villa, with an (impressive) pump that pumps up the good stuff into a big water filter system that then feeds it into the bathrooms and kitchen.

No water bill. 200 or so baht a month savings right thurr. But it is a big U.G.L.Y you ain't got no alibi, you fugly... you fugly thang. This wonderwell needs a masterplan.

I've been so busy since moving in 10 or so months ago that I haven't even had a minute to look at it. There are some Christmas garden parties planned so might as well Bruce Springsteen it up a bit.

For the last 10 months it's looked like this:

    My eyes, my eyeeeeeeeeeeeessssssssssssss.

Lil' Blacky the BBQ on the left before the water filter system, and the remnants of my charcoal chopping on the path.

The tile covers a nice large purpose built hole, presumably for throwing unwanted pets into.

The tile itself is odd, because there are none of those in the villa.

Anyway, decided to look at it for the first time yesterday and holy fudge, the top actually moves.

Well would ya looky at that.

    Wonders never cease.

Looking in, it became pretty clear that....

The top concrete ring that starts above the ground will only ever be needed if there's another December 2004.

So why not fok it off?

Have some koont take it away - maybe.

Roll it off to a part of the garden and use it as a tree pot - fugly.

Break it up with a hammer and shiz, then throw the rubble into the neighbouring plot - maybe. But how easy is it to break up one of these koontin' things?

    So, current plan is:

    1. remove lid.

    2. remove top ring.

    3. Place lid on the new top ring just above the ground.

    4. Place the removed ring back on top of it.

    5. Paint the whole thing brown.

    6. Put in potted plants, a palm or some shiz, in a manner that doesn't drain down into the well.

    So, cleaning and painting.

    1. Metal wire brush and some good ol' elbow grease.

    2. Primer?

    3. Normal outdoor house paint?

    And that's it, right.

It's been painted already.... the same colour as concrete.... Quite creatively.

    So is primer needed?

    What primer for outdoor concrete?

Which paint is best for outdoor concrete? It obviously needs to be water/weather proof.

Plumbing new depths eddo cheddar, you must be as bored as me. But I'm.not gonna break out the fruity cups of tea. But frankly I've no idea what your banging on about. Are you telling me you've been in this gaff 10 months but didn't know where your water came from?. Is this a similar post where you needed instruction to put up shelves, use a drill etc? FFS.

    I'll search meself, then.

What kind of primer should I use on concrete?

Acrylic Primer – Acrylic and water-based primers soak into concrete. But unlike oil, latex bonds to the surface and dries faster. Polyurethane Primer – Surfaces with stains and imperfections are best corrected with Polyurethane Primer.

    Acrylic primer it is then.

I always thought that 'acrylic' described a clever retort from cyrille that I didn't fully understand.

What is the best concrete paint for outdoors?

Epoxy-based paints provide high durability and stain resistance, making them ideal for garage or patio floors. Masonry paints are designed for brick and other masonry applications, but also provide effective coatings for concrete.
    Wire brush.
    Acrylic primer.
    Epoxy based paint.

No, it's a bad thing. That's the purpose of the top ring - to prevent surface water running in to your well and introducing contaminants such as dog poop, fertiliser etc. Not long after these start cascading into your well and entrapping air, you will have fungi and algae growing in your well.

If you and your family are exposed to this contaminated water pumped from the well, skin disease, sickness and possibly death will result. You are the best judge on whether this will be a good outcome, or perhaps you could set up a poll if undecided.

I had one of those in my yard and instead of removing the top ring, I added another one. I decorated the outside with small ornamental bricks giving the look of an old wishing well and used the top with sand wash as a garden table for my barbecue.

One thing to check while you are fooling around with it is the distance between the well and any septic tanks with similar construction you may have on your property. Cross contamination can occur if they are too close.

There's a well at the bottom of my mum's garden in Somerset. It's about 30 feet deep with 3 feet of water at the bottom and brick lined. Apparently it used to serve one end of the village. I don't know how old it is, certainly Victorian and maybe older.

When I was a kid I used to want to go down it to explore... people used to throw valuables down wells to hide them when marauders came, and stuff like that. I used to do a lot of caving so I had the wire ladders and stuff but my parents never allowed me to go down the well, worried that it would collapse and bury me below ground.

I'm old enough to over-rule my mother these days but I don't really fancy going down the well any more. To be honest I'm not sure that I'd fit these days due to my broad shoulders.

Leave it alone. Walk away. Somchai built it that way for a reason, and foreigners won't understand, but Somchai learnt from his, dad, his dad's dad...

Whatever kills you make you stronger, I think is the saying.

The new top with lid will be:

A good 19cm above the ground. No dogs, cats or other animals allowed loose in the Villa complex. Dill's not even allowed back into Thailand so him dropping a deuce in it can also be ruled out. :-)

The cover would be left on.

Just under the top ring instead of on top of it.
